  1. I would use the official complaint procedure on their website. I would complain that the woman was trying to sell pups to people who were purchasing dog food. And that she insulted you by making a very nasty comment about your own activities, which are in competition to her dog selling business. Two complaints in one means double trouble for her. We shouldn't have to put up with idiots like her annoying people who are just trying to buy groceries.
  2. If you choose to keep a sickly puppy that cannot be vaccinated. - Keep it at home and keep other dogs right away. Immunisation works because of herd immunity. Because most people do the right thing. In areas where increasing numbers of people are being sucked in by pseudo-scientific anti-vacc claims, the deadly diseases are returning. People are dying because of this disgusting anti-vacc attitude, not just dogs. I have zero respect for people that choose to put other people and dogs at risk because of ridiculous rubbish they "researched" on the net. Having an "open mind" seems to leave some people prone to believing some outrageously stupid and dangerous crap. Keeping my mind safely closed on this, I will listen to those who are experts and who provide evidence of their claims.
  3. Send a private message to Prydenjoy. She has a couple of lovely paps.
  4. I respect those who research critically, being able to distinguish the difference between reliable research and harmful rubbish. Somebody mentioned peer-reviewed studies, which are a good place to start. This person obviously doesn't. And although that might be because she doesn't know any better, it isn't worthy of any respect. In some jurisdictions her choice would be illegal as well as unethical. Hopefully in between her insults she has read and learned something here, and we should be pleased that she wasn't given an open opportunity to further spread her harmful rubbish.
  5. That is extremely insulting to those of us who have done months or years of research into dog health. You have been given the best advice possible, if you want to avoid drama and confrontation, don't argue, and please do keep your unvaccinated dogs at home. Do you think that anyone likes putting chemicals on their dogs? We do it because fleas, ticks and parvovirus are all very serious threats to our dogs' health.
  6. For the best chance at a long healthy life, all pups should be vaccinated. The decision to stop vaccinating every year after the pup is fully grown is up for debate, but to not vaccinate at all is to take a huge risk. And it is illegal in some areas, so check your local council laws. Don't your obedience clubs require proof of vaccination to compete?
  7. It was an innocent mistake on your part. When you use the services of a business in Australia you are entitled to expect the service will be done professionally. We have laws about that. To open a facility for dogs without any sound knowledge of dog behaviour - that is the stupid mistake. Very stupid. All dogs need to be carefully managed. It was the situation that caused the staffies to act how they did, they are no more likely to hurt a child than any other dog is. If you put strange dogs in a big pack together, and add some in some things that dogs like, like toys or bones or just the territory itself, you will get dogs challenging other dogs. In this case they had two dogs who are physically sturdy and tenacious of character in with a light framed dog, it's just a recipe for disaster. That is why these type of places are never going to work. And it is fairly annoying to hear claims by people that they are capable of managing dogs in this type of situation. When I hear that I just think that the person has not enough experience with dogs to know what can go wrong.
  8. Lol yes. I don't think that we should have to wear a sign or symbol to tell others to give us space. All dogs should be given space by default. If you want to come in close you should always ask first.
  9. You can't easily teach the difference in any practical sense. Any breed of dog will lose its sense of touch if it's adrenaline is surging hard enough. Bullbreeds were originally selected for their propensity for this and so it's never surprising to hear of it happening. They are tenacious. The more you allow this dog to chase and kill any type of animal, the more you keep her prey drive high because the behaviour is so rewarding. All dogs have prey drive to some degree. You might be best to get an adult rescue dog that has been assessed as not showing prey drive towards the types of animals on your property. And most importantly keeping your dogs confined away from areas where wild animals are likely to be.
  10. White Rose Kennels in Walloon. They know dogs and are not anthropomorphic at all. They know what dogs are capable of if circumstances are not managed, so the dogs are managed with care and kept separately unless the owner specifically requests that their dogs be allowed to be kept with each other. I ask for my two dogs to be kept separate when boarding, and that is what happens. They have plenty of different yards, large and small to accommodate all sorts of dogs' needs. Even the way the dogs are kept in the kennels there prevents them stirring each other up or being able to challenge each other through the enclosures. The owners are really on the ball. I am so horrified to read this thread. For me, boarding is about keeping a dog secure, safe and comfortable in my absence. And that is what White Rose is all about and what all professional kennels should be about.
  11. I can recommend that kennel. I have used them many times.
  12. Your friend didn't have to go inside, she could have locked the dog away instead, and taught it a lesson about what happens to bad dogs that hump. Going inside is just avoiding doing anything about the problem, and the dog knows that.
  13. Just like we drive a car? This is absolute rubbish from Pound Rounds. When we drive a car we take reasonable precautions, but we expect people selling us cars to have made sure the cars are safe to drive and roadworthy at the time of sale. It's a legal and moral obligation they have to ensure that what they are selling is safe for any reasonable average lay person to buy and use. Pound Rounds refuse to take any of the precautions that they could be taking to help ensure community safety. This statement claiming to take precautions is an outright lie, and shows how irresponsible they are. There are plenty of known practices which lessen the risk of an adoption going wrong and people and animals being hurt, and those people selling adult dogs have a responsibility to make sure they follow them. Not to blame a person buying a dog in good faith. I look forward to somebody kicking Pound Round's arse in court and forcing them to take some responsibility for their actions.
  14. Especially those countries like Vietnam where they boil them alive and eat them Why would anyone spend thousands of dollars so they can transport their pets back home to "boil them alive and eat them"? The point being made was that the dog might not be seen as valuable enough to spend a lot of money on taking back to another country, because the owner might consider it is edible and disposable. Not that the dog would be exported for food. Although I think the point is a bit insensitive. There is absolutely no difference between an Asian student that buys a pet without full consideration of the obligation that brings them over the next fifteen years or so and an Australian student that does the same thing. The difference is that the Australian student may have a parent on which to dump the animal when they get tired of their responsibility, where as the Asian student has nobody. Best to delay dog buying until you have finished full-time studying and settled in life in the place where you want to be. No matter what nationality you are. Then buy a dog to suit your lifestyle, from wherever in the world you need to get it from. That's my twenty cents worth anyway.
  15. I put goldie through chemotherapy and I don't think she suffered from it. It gave us extra time and I would do it again if I had to with another dog.
  16. No need to chuckle. If the dog's breeder is not prepared to sign her name to an official document (from a registering body) to certify who the parents are, there is always going to be doubt as to which dogs really are the parents. I wouldn't be making any claims about the dog other than it is Japanese Spitz. Without papers, you won't be breeding on with it anyway, so it doesn't matter to anyone else whether your dog is purebred or not.
  17. Really, they pay the many thousands required and put the dogs into quarantine as required? well good on them. Pleased to read it. I've never heard of anyone importing a dog like that into Australia, let alone heaps of people. It is very expensive to export dogs to other countries from Australia and extremely expensive to import them. The cost is prohibitive for many people. It isn't racist to enquire whether a young person who doesn't have an Australian accent is a permanent resident, and if it is part of a conversation about the dog's future it is the type of information that is essential that this be communicated.
  18. I thought you were looking for an English Cocker Spaniel to take back to Singapore with you? The RSPCA's objective is the welfare of the dogs they rehome, not just giving one to anyone who hands over the money. Anyone who cares about the welfare of the dogs they sell would be concerned about your citizenship status and what that means for the dog. Large organisations like the RSPCA have policies of who they will sell a dog to. If you were to buy a dog from a breeder or other individual, they may be more open to persuasion.
  19. I would call most of these types of rescue "breed rescue" not "purebreed rescue". It is quite ok that an organisation would specialise in rehoming one breed. It can make it easier for them to market the dogs, and to educate adopters when they are only dealing with one breed or type of dog.
  20. Purebreed means to breed pure. It means if you put two of that breed together, they will breed pure, you will not end up with anything other than a dog with the breed traits. I think it's pretty commonly accepted that this will take at least 8 generations until you can be sure a pair of dogs will breed pure. Then you have dogs that can be called purebreds. A pedigree is a document that visualises the dog's lineage (family tree). All dogs have a lineage, no puppies just appeared by magic, they were all born from other dogs. A pedigree document could only be produced if the dogs came from registered lines. Most cross breed dogs are of unknown lineage. So a pedigree document cannot be produced for them. Unregistered dogs are also of unknown pedigree as the dog is an unknown individual. Cross breed dogs of known lineage are unregistered so they are also unknown and so a pedigree could not be produced for them. Sometimes an unknown dog will come into rescue that looks exactly like a purebreed. It can be called whatever breed it looks like, but as it will be desexed, you will have no way to know if it is a purebreed or not. This dog shouldn't be called a cross breed or a purebreed, it is of unknown breeding. It will not have a pedigree unless it comes with identification documents. An unknown dog has an unknown pedigree, so you cannot claim that the dog is pedigree. (Race bred greyhounds have tattoos, so this identifies them as registered, purebreed, and having a pedigree) So pedigree and purebreed mean different things - a pedigree is a document showing lineage (and only worth something if produced by a registry), purebreed means to breed pure and not throw traits that don't belong in that breed.
  21. It won't be personal opinion if you end up with a dog prone to barking even if the dog is barking for a reason. You will need to get a breed with suitable traits for high density living or risk being evicted. You might be better not giving your opinion of breeds you obviously dont like or the cars they are driven around in. If you don't want to offend.
  22. You are wrong if you think large breeds all use or need more space or need yards. I've owned large and small dogs and the larger are less active and noisy. Rules about sizes of dogs are irrational. Temperament is way more important. Somebody just described how easily they kept a dane in a flat and the OP expressed the opinion that this would be hard to do. I think a dane would be easier to keep quiet and happy in a flat than many toy breeds who are active and vocal.
  23. He sounds wonderfully well adjusted, and a credit to your organisational skills! We're not far from St Kilda beach either and your flat sounds much like ours, and as lovely as they are I just think that would be a little optimistic! I'm glad to hear it can be done though, he sounds sweet. Large quiet dogs like danes and greyhounds are easier to manage in apartments than most of the small breeds recommended here. The larger dogs are less active and not yappy and can hold on longer between toilet breaks. You seem to be under the impression that small dogs are more suited but many of them are harder to manage when noise is an issue. ote]
  24. One achieves the other. Calling the dogs brothers is anthropomorphic but your assessment may not be. I would have to see it for myself to give an opinion on what's going on.
