  1. I was looking at the Happy Paws treats but seems the ones I would buy are out of stock. I like the idea of a mixed bag, so it's different every time. Was also thinking of lamb puffs???
  2. We take our two cavaliers to obedience and I'm looking for some really great treats to reward them. We have used cabanossi and cheese which gets quite disgusting on the hot nights. We have also used beef liver treats which are quite good but the little guy seems to be getting bored with these, so I'm looking for something that's really, really yummy. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Something small, reasonably healthy, not fatty, etc...I'm sure you understand what I mean Thanks.
  3. Kermat - when Izzy had both hers done, she was walking quite well in three days. I crated her for the whole week, just letting her out for a little while at a time but she was quite good about it, took it easy anyway. Her stitches came out after 10 days and she was walking really well by then. I thought she'd be limping for a long time but it's amazing how quickly they recover. I would definitely keep them quiet for a week, though.
  4. Izzy's surgery was done differently to the way most vets do it.
  5. My puppy just had hers done just over three weeks ago - both done at the same time and she is great. She was very unhappy before the surgery, must have been in a bit of pain. She would sit around and not do anything. Now she's back to playing and bouncing around.
  6. We went to puppy pre-school with both our puppies at different places. Our first puppy, we took to a private place. It was great. There were seven puppies in the class - a nice amount. We had off leash time in the beginning but our girl was the smallest in the class and completely overwhelmed by it all and just wanted to curl up on our laps. We learnt to sit, stand, drop, stay. We also learnt to get into position on the left side, which they called heel (not walking heel). We practiced through the week until we went back. Now we go to obedience classes to continue with the training. With our second puppy, we just go to the same place we take Izzy to for obedience. He has just finished puppy classes. They teach similar things to the other puppy school but the price was a lot cheaper. The main difference was the size of the classes. Sometimes, the length of time is just too long for puppies to concentrate. Sometimes, we went for 90 minutes at this first puppy school and Izzy would fall asleep towards the end. Ollie gets too distracted with all the dropped treats on the ground, too. Overall, I think we're fairly happy with the way both were run, though. Talking about the length of time, I'm sure even older dogs have days where they lack concentration, too. Rewards were supplied at the first puppy school - cheese and cabanossi.
  7. I had to use Cetrigen - that purple spray - on Izzy's legs. I don't mind so much that her legs are pink/purple but after she was sprayed, she curled herself into a ball, so now her tail and front legs are pink. Is there anything I can use to get this out of her fur? I haven't bathed her yet - will do it on the weekend, so I'm not sure how much a bath will get it out, although I was told that it stains. I got it out of some clothes but others are still stained - will just have to put more stain remover on them - no big deal but can't really use the Sard spray on my puppy So...any ideas?
  8. Interesting topic...my 11 month old Cavalier just had both hers done. She is recovering well.
  9. So glad you could understand what I meant - I was starting to confuse myself. That's what I though...another split ring but I was wondering if there was a better way. I should have bought one from the other place - silly me. The tag we have for our girl hangs right because it is like the pawprintpettags place.
  10. That's what I did and that's why it doesn't hang straight. There's a D ring on his collar which I attached the split ring that came with the tag to which is also attached to the tag and that's why it hangs sideways. If you look at: http://www.pawprintpettags.com/index.cfm?D...mp;ProductID=92 You can see that the hole is sideways and that means that it hangs perfect. Red Dingo have: http://www.reddingo.net/html/tags1.htm See the hole is in the front of the tag? This means that it hands sideways
  11. This might sound like a really dumb question but I just got my Red Dingo Pet Tag in the mail yesterday. When I attach it to my puppy's collar, it hangs sideways because the loop is through the front of the tag. What can I do to get it to hang straight so when you look at the dog, you can see the front of the tag?
  12. She's cute, cute, cute I have a 10 month and an 11 week old Cav. Ollie is just such a baby and he doesn't have full run of the house because he can't get up the stairs . Other than that, he wanders around everywhere. I don't leave either one inside alone when we're out, though. Izzy has full run of the house. She was a dream to toilet train, sure she had a few accidents but they were our fault for being too slow in getting her outside after a sleep. So, to answer your question, I would say, if you can watch her at all times, maybe let her out and supervise for a few minutes at a time. As for the lounge . I always said I didn't want Izzy on the lounge or on the bed or upstairs at all. What a joke!! I tried to keep it that way for such a long time but it didn't work. When Izzy was younger, she chewed through the laptop power cord. That was about the only bad thing she ever did. Now, I can leave things on the floor and she doesn't touch them. Having this new puppy, I have to go back to picking everything up, watching him every second.
  13. At the moment, I have to put her up on the kitchen bench and hold her but she backs away and ends up almost in the kitchen sink .
  14. Which is the best brush to use when I'm drying my cavalier? I use the hairdryer but she takes forever to dry. Is there a brush that will help lift her fur and help her dry quicker but one that keeps her coat nice and smooth so she doesn't end up with "bed" hair while she's still damp? What do you all recommend?
  15. Problem is, I need more hands . Plus, she tries to chew on the brush - she thinks it's a game. Other than that, she just wants to run away.
  16. I have a question...how do you get your dogs to stand still while you give them a good brush? If I get the brush out, I can do down Izzy's back if she's in a sleepy mood but if I do it too much, she gets up and moves but to do anywhere else on her body, it's always a struggle unless I put her up high where she can't get away but then she backs away and sits down, making it very awkward. I have always brushed her, since she was a little puppy so it's not like I'm introducing something new but she's never really been into it - she seems to be getting worse, though, so was just after some tips that might help.
  17. Looking at the wet food in the supermarkets, in particular the little trays. What do people think of: My Dog Divine Nature's Gift Pedigree Woolworths Select We have tried all of these. We also use Royal Canin kibble. The Divine seemed to have nice chunks and our puppy loved it. She also loved the My Dog range with the special sauces in the middle. Nature's Gift went down well, as well as the Woolworths Select. She used to have the Pedigree Natural often so I think she might be bored with that now, although I didn't think dogs needed variety. I have been checking the ingredients listed on these packs and they all seem ok to me but perhaps I'm not reading them properly. I know that so many people are against these supermarket foods, so I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing and choosing the right one or two for her. I know people will suggest cooking chicken, rice, etc but then she won't be getting all the vitamins and nutrients she needs - hopefully these dog foods do include everything. Anyway, I am interested in what people have to say...also interested in dry dog food comments, too. We have used Advance and Royal Canin. Thanks.
  18. Izzy had her stitches out yesterday. Her little cut is healing beautifully. While she had the stitches, I left them alone - didn't wipe them, didn't get them wet. I did see she had "collected" bit of dirt between the stitches, so I carefully wiped that out with my fingers but that's all.
  19. We were told to ignore our puppy when we first get home and wait until she's calm and then get down and pat her. Great advice, sure but we were just as excited to see her as she was us. It's hard. Eventually, as your pup gets older, he won't even bother getting up unless you have food, so I say, enjoy it while he still does it. Ha ha!!
  20. I asked the same question before we got our puppy. I was advised that an open wire crate was best for air flow, especially if you use it in the car. We bought one from Pet Barn. There is no way I'd be able to pick it up and put it in the car, anyway but it's been good for our girl, plus it came with a divider, so when she was really small, we sectioned it off and have just moved it along as she's grown.
  21. I can see that you've made progress - well done. We used the crate at night. Izzy had an accident the first night she was home but after that, she woke me up maybe twice through the night. I would get up, take her outside, she would go and then she'd go back to bed. It only took just over a week and she slept through the whole night. She had a few accidents inside but most of the time, I was watching her. If she looked like she was sniffing, I would pick her up and put her on the grass, same with after dinner or if she just hadn't been outside for a while. It really doesn't take very long if you have the patience and don't get too angry with them - they're only babies and only learning.
  22. I took a week off work when we got Izzy. I was going to try and leave her for short periods during this time but unfortunately, our garden wasn't fenced, so everytime she went outside, she jumped straight in to the garden with the bark. So, the weekend after we got her (after we fenced it off), we left her for a little while. She cried and cried but we had to go out because the following day, we were both back at work. Izzy's dad came home every lunch time and has done until now. Unfortunately, he starts a new job on Monday which doesn't allow him to pop in. I'll be having some time off in six weeks and maybe I can find work with either shorter hours and/or closer to home.
  23. The first day we brought Izzy home (last Friday), she was fairly quiet. We were told no chasing balls and no rough games. I asked about stairs and the vet said that should be fine. She didn't worry too much the first day or two but after that, she was running up the stairs. I tried to stop her but she obviously wasn't in any pain and her little cut was healing really well. She has been on a couple of short walks since. We were told not to let her play with other dogs and not to get wet. She hasn't even worried about licking her stitches, either. I check her stitches everyday and there has been no swelling or redness.
