okkkkk It probably feels good , and is very natural to pee/mark things . However, it is not an acceptable behaviour for dogs living indoors/closely with humans. It doesn't often happen that someone comes on here and laughs about their dog peeing on a new couch, or all over the clothes left draped on the end of the bed .... Why then is humping so often seen as mildly/downright amusing /acceptable? I guess everyone decides what behaviour is acceptable. What is acceptable to me maybe different to everyone else. Some people let their dogs ambush every visitor that comes to the house or beg for food when ever they are eating, I don't as this is not acceptable in my house. Some people let their dogs on their bed or on the lounge some don't. You are right my dogs know it is not acceptable to pee/mark in the house just like they know it is not acceptable to annoy visitors. My point was I have had puppies hump toys, which I don't find offensive, but they never were or turned into serial leg humpers or had any dominance issues, other people may have these issues with their dogs. There are many people that have behaviours I find irritating too but others wouldn't have a problem with them so it all comes down too what you find acceptable. Just like some people bring their children up differently to one another, people often have different ideas about what is expected of their dogs. Some people find AI's or picking up poo in a bag ikky too but most breeders or showys wouldn't give it a second thought. Like everything these forums can be a great place for people to share their varied opinions and experiences, people can then decide what they take on board and is useful and what they don't agree with and file with the trash. Cheers

I had a Rottweiler that use to hump his teddy every night until he fell asleep, he was a great dog never once tried to hump a leg etc and he stopped humping teddy with age. He never even bothed our bitches unless they were spot on ready to mate and even though I never used him for stud he was great at telling us when the bitch was ready to be sent for mating. After we desexed him he was still a great indicator of when a bitch was ready. Letting him go to town on teddy never progressed to more serious humping. Most of my dogs that are feeling happy and healthy hump toys at some stage but have never tried to hump a leg etc. I guess some do it out of dominance but some just hump because they feel good and it's natural Cheers

Just in reply to this Lee it was torrential rain and thunderstorms on the weekend of the show the ground was under water for 2 of the 3 days That may have been the case, like I said just a general observation, but if a dog is panting regardless of the weather I wouldn't want to hold it's mouth shut and I have never been asked to by any judge to date. I have been asked to mouth my dog which is amusing when the judge has mouthed every other breed before mine themselves. My comment was only general as I found it a strange thing to ask. I must admit I have seen some other things I didn't find very smart over the years, Like a judge stradling my dog to go over him, another had two males facing each other (eye Balling) or the few that feel the need to tug on the tail. One year at Sydney Royal, in the male challenge class, the judge kept getting us to move closer to the dog in front and was getting quite cranky if a handler wasn't moving closer, in the end we had a line of male Rottweilers where you could hardly see where one stopped and the other began (and a few nervous people on the end of the leads). I have seen judges rush over to my Rotts from behind and go straight to the head or bend over with their faces very close to my dogs face in an act that from my dogs point of veiw could look like they are eye balling the dog. I am confident of my dog's temperaments and always try to do what is asked of me in a ring but some things asked just lack common sense and no matter how good a dogs temperament some things asked are on the verge of setting them up to fail. Don't get me wrong I am in no way judge bashing, most judges approach and handle the dogs in a safe manner but some don't and some are that worried about certain breeds they really should consider if they should be judging that breed at all. I don't and will never defend having a sick dog at a show and that is not what my comment was about and I guess we could take it further by adding all the people that turn up to a show with a dog that appears healthy but they have some sickness doing the rounds through their kennels. Cheers Lee

Sorry, off topic. Just a general question and I'm not commenting on this case, it's just a question that sprung to mind while reading about this. If a big black dog is hot and panting or any dog for that matter, and panting being the only way it can cool itself should we be asked to close the dogs mouth or hold it shut, aside from quickly showing scissor bite. I always put a hand on the side of the dogs head to prevent it from looking around when the judge goes down the side or checks teslicles as a matter of courtesy. Many judges have checked my dogs heads on hot days while they are panting and they have put a hand either side of the dogs head while checking but I have never been told to hold their mouth closed or to close the mouth preventing a dog from panting. I know it would probably only be held shut for a short time but owning a big black dog I am very aware at how hot they can get even when only standing in the ring for a short time especially when we are usually required in the ring during the hottest part of the day (as the luck of the alphabet has it) Just thinking out loud about what we ask of our dogs sometimes Cheers Lee

A prefix is their registered kennel name, registered with their state Canine control. In the past our club has had enquiries about breeders when papers haven't turned up. Some breeders weren't putting the registrations into their CC until the pups had already gone to their new homes and it sometimes took a number of weeks for the papers to be issued and sent on. All the papers did turn up eventually from these registered breeders that the enquiries were about. If you brought from a registered breeder give them a ring and ask where the papers are, every pups from a registered litter has to be registered whether it be main or limited register. If they are registered the prefix/kennel name might be the same as the web site name, mine is Cheers Lee

QLD CCC code of ethics.....not one not 2 days before 8 weeks.Exporting 11 weeks. U.K.pups do not leave home before 12 weeks same should apply here imho. ETA,pathetic excuse on behalf of this breeder imho I was thinking more along the lines of SA being different but Like I said I could be remembering wrong Cheers Lee
-
Like i said a REGISTED breeder arnt allowed to let there pups go before 8 weeks of age... My guys were 1 day shy of 8 weeks i had ppl wanting to take them.. Simple answer NO They are not 8 weeks of age... If she got all your details papers should take couple weeks I could be wrong but I seem to remember that age for pups leaving for their new homes could be slightly different in each state CC. We were looking at our National Code of ethics and one state had put up that pups couldn't leave breeders until 7 weeks where other states said it was 8 weeks. Like I said I could be wrong, it was a while ago and I only just remember there was an issue with the different CC being slightly different Cheers Lee

Which indicates that it being "an administrative error" and a non-event, is not actually the case. Else wise, why would it be on the agenda for discussion? Why can't they respond with a "no we can't confirm the contents of that conversation and no it is not off the agenda as a possibility" or something along those lines? Hi Erny As letters have been sent and an agenda already set they can't just take it off the agenda. The letters received have to be tabled at the meeting. So this doesn't happen again this needs to be discussed and finalised now. If they come up with this was an admin error then that, I presume, is what will be discussed and then letters would be answered with the out come. Most letters Tabled are along the lines of wanting to make sure this doesn't happen again and asking for an undertaking from the ANKC as such. Cheers Lee
-
Not that I am aware of yet, no reply has been posted on our website.... I'm thinking that replies to letters will probably be sent after discussions at the meeting. I sent a letter from me and also we sent a club letter through Dogs NSW and we received reply from DNSW confirming receipt and that the letters had been sent to ANKC to be tabled at the meeting Cheers

Anyone With A 'large, Trained' Dog Want Some Movie Work?
rotts4ever replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
I really really want to stress the point that I don't want to exploit anyone. I wrote this script because I love spending time with dogs and I thought it would be really interesting to work with dogs on film. Sorry I can't help you out you with this (see previous post about our clubs and ANKC code of ethics) I do understand what you are trying to acheive but my concerns are still as previously posted. Shame it wasn't a different circumstance as I think it would be very interesting. If you are ever after a big goof ball let me know, I have a clown here but he is strictly for warm fuzzy stuff.LOL Cheers -
Erny, we think the same way. I felt terrible that these sorts of thoughts popped into my head and then I read your post. I hope this was just a lovely gesture but I'm still not trusting enough to feed anything to my dogs I don't know where it come from. How paranoid am I. Keep the nice feeling but I wouldn't feed the goodies to my dog but thats just me Cheers

Anyone With A 'large, Trained' Dog Want Some Movie Work?
rotts4ever replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
You might find anyone that is a member of a club or CC couldn't supply dogs for this as they could still be seen in a bad light (even if unjustified) and this is against some clubs code of ethics. The shame is he will find some idiot security company to do it and the effect will be the same anyway in regards to typecasting some breeds as evil, aggressive or unpredictable (even though we know this is nonsense). He has explained this is symbolic etc and I get where he is coming from but it doesn't take many to see things like this and the already seeded fear/ impression etc in peoples brains about certain breeds is fertilized further. Unfortunatley many hours of good PR are always forgotten from even just a couple of seconds of a certain breed shown in this light. Not everyone in our society can separate what is acting/symbolic from real life etc. SAD BUT TRUE I wish him luck with the project but I hope it isn't at the cost of more crap sticking to our dogs Cheers Lee -

We need to be careful of this as it was said at Dogs NSW to a Rottie person that the adding of these titles was an admin error in the 1st place and there is nothing to say these titles have to go on the registrations, We need the fact that registrations are an exact copy of originals with all titles left on somewhere written into the constitution/rules of ANKC etc Hope I'm making sense of what I'm trying to say ( I'm not a trusting soul) cheers Lee
-
I agree I think this still needs to be made offical by the ANKC that all titles (Front and rear of pedigrees) will be left on certificates of registrations so we don't go down this road again when they want to edit a certificate of registration Cheers Lee

Hi ems999 I own Rottweilers, which I adore, and have handled Bull Mastiffs, which I'm also very fond of and would consider owning one anyday. I actually found that they can be very similar. I have had a few Bull mastiffs stay with me and they ran and fit in with my Rottweilers very well. I have friends that have or do own both breeds. The Bull mastiff is a night guarding breed so can be very protective, the Rottweiler can be very protective. They both require a good leader, socialisation etc, they can both be very strong. They both have the same issues where you have to be careful with bloat, like a lot of deep chestered breeds. I don't exercise the Rotties heavily in the hottest part of the day, same with the Bull Mastiff. My Rottweilers seemed to cope with the heat better than the Bull Mastiffs I had staying with me. I would probably say that Rottweilers require more exercise even though some Rotts can be lounge lizards. Bullmastiff Standard has them slightly larger and heavier than a Rottweiler I would also say that their health related issues are also very similar in regards to cancers, hips, elbows, Entropian etc. Most of my friends that have lost a Bull Mastiff have lost them through cancer or bloat. I guess if you think about it in relation to age a lot of people over 40 or 50 are also treated for cancer related illness and their are the tragic cases when children and even babies have certain types of cancer, it's the same in dogs. I think longevity is better in some lines than others in both breeds Feeding etc is the same, you grow the young ones slowly so there is less strain on little bones and most restrict heavy exercise in the young of both breeds. Register Rottweiler Breeders that are a member of a Rottweiler club have to follow guidelines of only breeding pairs that hip scores fall within a certain limit and elbows must also be scored where as I'm not sure if this is the same for Bull Mastiff Breeders, I'm not sure if it is compulsary to score a Bull mastiff but I think most registered breeders do. As far as the Rottweiler temperament goes, as with the Bull Mastiffs, look at the lines, meet the parents and breeders. There is good and bad in every breed. Having said this though like with any puppy you will get out what you put in, which you probably already know and I don't leave any dog unsupervised with young children. Rottweiler Temperament being good natured, placid in basic disposition and fond of children, he is very devoted, obedient, biddable and eager to work. His appearance is natural and rustic, his behaviour self assured, steady and fearless. He reacts to his surroundings with great alertness Bull Mastiff Characteristics Powerful, enduring, active and reliable. Temperament High spirited, alert and faithful. All this is said just from my experiences with both breeds maybe others have had different experiences, it hard to generalize when you meet different types and temperament from the same breeds especially when you chuck in how a puppy is raised etc Cheers Lee

Is it chicken free?? I have a bag in front of me and it doesn't have chicken listed but it does say animal fat preserved with so it would depend what animal fat they have used, try calling their hot line. I actually like the Pro Plan Salmon and have all mine on it and Artemis at the moment and they are all doing really well. I looked at the Canidae Grain Free Salmon Formula and the Artemis gain free but I wouldn't be feeding a young dog that much Protein. I asked a vet etc about the high proteins in the grain free foods for dogs that aren't in work etc and was advised not to use it for the younger dogs but it would be ok for the older dogs as they would convert the extra protein not used into carbohydrates but it was better for working, active dogs. Cheers

This appeared in the "DogNews Australia" magazine March I think. Interesting. Now the ANKC a member of FCI is removing the Titles from the paper work of imports etc Cheers http://www.dognewsaustralia.com.au/ KEEPING PEACE WITH FCI Embargo lifted on Schutzhund While the ANKC fell short of giving official approval to the Australian United Sportdog Clubs (AUSC) for Schutzhund events, it has effectively removed a virtual embargo that had been placed on the activity in 1995. In 1995 the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) resolved that; "ANKC will not take responsibility for the management nor control of Schutzhund in Australia. Also the ANKC will not recognise any Schutzhund titles awarded in Australia or to any dog awarded a title resident in Australia. No Member Body of the ANKC shall recognise or approve Schutzhund training activity or conduct Schutzhund Trial competition and any member taking part risks disqualification. ANKC Member Bodies consider Schutzhund training is not in the best interests of their activities." That resolution was removed in 2008 when an application was made to the ANKC to recognise and sanction IPO (Schutzhund) events by Mr Maurice Della Costa, Vice President of the AUSC of Australia, the organisation that governs the practice in this country. There are 5 breeds now being exhibited in Australia that come under FCI breed standards which require a Schutzhund title before they can achieve full FCI Championship status.

He's just gone 7mths old, and is gaining 1.2-1.8kgs a week still, so I don't think he's ready to switch to adult ... though that would solve lots of problems !! but my vet is very wary of messing with his food at this point. . . :-( A lot of breeders of Large/Giant breeds grow their puppies on adult food after they turn 6 or 7 months so swapping him to adult now wouldn't be a problem if you find an adult food that suits. All mine start to get swapped over to adult from about 7/ 8 months and are on total adult by about 9 or so months. I also add raw to their diets though and they have all done well. I've been lucky with good hips and elbows so far as well so their diet hasn't had any ill effects in that department. Good luck with your boy Cheers

Like I said someone who knows more about the disciplines of the titles than me. I was under the impression that they would also take BH off. But I am still concerned about the other opinions, questions I have as stated in my post. Did everything go through the correct procedures or is this just another change put through without the backing of the members? The first I heard of it was someone posting today on another forum but then again I am a mushroom at times. Cheers

The ANKC has no right to change a pedigree from an imported dog. If these titles are on an imports registration papers and are titles that are recongnised by the country the dog resides/being imported from then the registration papers should remain the same as the originals and any litter registrations should reflect the exact pedigree of the Sire and Dam. The exact Pedigree includes titles gained by the Sire and Dam. Also didn't the ANKC rejoin the FCI and as part of this they abide by their rules. These titles are reconised by the FCI, ADRK etc. so I wonder what the fall out of this will be. As mentioned about the breed standard being added too this too is unacceptable. One day it maybe impossible to get an FCI,ADRK Specialist judge to come to our country and then you might as well say we will only be showing at all breeds shows. In our breed our specialties are very important to us and competitive and I don't think for one minute that some of these seemingly unrelated decisions wont affect this aspect of our breed. We chose to follow the country of origin Standard not a doctored version. Any additions could be added to the Extended Breed Standard while leaving the Breed standard in it's true form. Also as has been mentioned some of these titles are, in my understanding, obedience related and don't even relate to any form of bite work unless the highest level has been achieved. By the time the dog has reach this level it would make most of our obedience champs look like beginners. I could be wrong, this is just my understanding. In regards to people selling puppies off these titles lets face it even if titles aren't recongised here they will just state the dogs have the titles anyway from overseas and will still use it as a selling tool. There are clubs out there for breeds that aren't recongnised by the ANKC and I don't think the fact that they aren't recongnised affects their puppy sales. I'm not arguing for or againt Dog Sports/Titles etc but am more worried how these things get passed when it seems that the correct procedures, meetings etc might not have taken place. How is it that breed clubs that are affected by these changes don't know about them until after the fact. There are so many things to consider, too many to add to a post, but a lot of things put in place do have a knock on effect to other issue relating to our breeds. I also think there is a lack of understanding as to what some titles actually are but someone more experienced in these disciplines could explain this better. Cheers Lee

I agree might settle him a little but at four years probably will not change his behaviour much. Over the years I have dogs that have been desexed late and still try and mount my bitches when they are in season. I have also had dogs that try and hump other dogs when they have a wound or have had an op. I have even had a bitch that tries and humps anything that smells different after an operation. Try separating them until the stitches come out and then wash to get rid of any blood smell etc and then only let them run together while your there to keep an eye on to observe how they are interacting. Dogs do strange things with different smells I wash a lot of dogs that as soon as their mate has a bath they try to hump and end up in an argument. You need to get on top of it now because even though it might be starting off as excitement over the smell etc it will probably esculate into something more if you don't nip it in the bud now. It could also be a bit of dominating behaviour. I have a male that will try and hump younger dogs, putting them in their place so I have to let him know it's not acceptable. I run my male Rottweilers together but only when I am home and never when there is a bitch in season or when they are eating etc Good Luck

Where To Buy Chicken Bones Etc Near Penrith
rotts4ever replied to Boxer05's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm not sure about necks as i don't feed them to the Rotts, a bit small, I would call first for chicken pieces and fames. I used to buy on a friday and had no problems getting any but now I buy on a Monday and quite often they had run out or minced them. They are open on a Sat but I'm not sure of their hours for businesses that have an account with them they don't do accounts on a sat as they are too busy. If you buy regulary you can have a running order which they will put away but this didn't suit me because it would be frozen and too hard to seperate to bag up. They can either have frames or Pieces (Pieces can be thigh, leg bones, half frames etc) depending on what has been delivered. So when you ring just ask if they have any frames or pieces, I learnt to ask for both as if I rang and asked if they had pieces and they didn't the girls forgot to mention that they had frames. go figure! Best to ring anyway and if they have them ask them to put away under your name and that your on your way to get them, save you a trip if they don't have what you want. I have their phone number, no sure if I am allowed to post it here? you can email at [email protected] if you need it Cheers Lee
