Gotta love the SpidaPug!!!

It does seem as though something is unsettling/upsetting him. Maybe there is some extra wildlife in the area, birds calling out perhaps that you are missing out on and only waking with him rousing you. I agree that crating or containing in a safe room would be the best option. If you are putting him in the sleep out area does he have window access? He can't get through any doors or windows?

Wishing you luck and a good outcome.

What Tricks Can You Do With More Than 1 Dog At The Same Time?
Jigsaw replied to fainty_girl's topic in Dog Tricks
Synchronised roll overs!!! Maybe train one to jump over the other. Walk backwards together, one picks up a toy and takes it to the other. I love this clip of dogs working together -
New Obedience & Tracking Rules

Thanks for posting this up. I wonder what the thinking is here with increasing the distance considering that a lot of CCD dogs are not very stable in stays in the first place . -
Help Needed With "stand For Examination"
Jigsaw replied to koalathebear's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
When the dog is in heel position and you're asking the dog to stand in training this I pass my hand (I use my left hand) across the face of the dog, down the LHS of the dog and then hold gently the stifle or knee of the dog rather than under the tummy (therefore avoiding the possibility of the wet area in boys :D ). I then usually reward from the right hand. I had successfully taught my dog to stand while I sat in front of her from a drop or sit but from the heel position I had to use this method as when I changed positions it confused her and so I adopted this method to help her understand what I was after. Then taught her just like stays small increments of distance and then duration incorporating rewards for steady feet. It's important to make sure your dog learns to stand for exam in a balanced manner. I've found a lot of dogs who don't stand with their weight evenly distributed often move their feet during the examination if they turn their head to look at the examiner or when the handler returns they shift their balance to follow their handler. -
Frustration At Training Classes
Jigsaw replied to cocoa's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Millie looks very sweet! I hope Huski comes in and posts here. She has a beagle too and has worked hard with her, training her in drive (food drive) to achieve a level where she is now competing in obedience with her beagle, Daisy. If you are using a collar that is too large for your pup your corrections may not be as effective as with a suitably fitted collar and if it is too big you may also run the risk of her backing out of it and running off. If you are just starting to train Millie and she doesn't know what you are asking her then she shouldn't be corrected. If you are not comfortable with the training methods find someone you do feel more comfortable with. If you let us know what area you are in someone may be able to point you to some other trainers in your area. I would be doing much more focus work with her inside your home before you even went outside, using positive training techniques to get her focus back on you. If your puppy is food or play driven harness that enthusiasm to train with. There are a few threads about training in drive, check out K9Pro's website as well. ETA Others beat me to it re Huski!! -
Should I Or Shouldn't I? Any Thoughts Appreciated.

Great story SC!!! Lovely that Tango is learning to share and be magnaminous with his "kill"!!! It's lovely when they find the dead things. It's not "I see dead people" it's "I smell dead things, find them and eat them"!!! -
Wonderful story and a great match up. I hope Sapper can help Andrew readjust back into life that's not in a war zone.

I would definitely go for an older dog. Look at the energy needs of the older dog and what your Nan can do. There are some dogs that even at 10 are still pretty energetic. Also how steady Nan is on her feet. Check out the dog's health and whether it has any vision or hearing loss as well, a blind or deaf dog is less likely to move out of your Nan's path if they don't know she's moving and could be a factor in a fall. Sometimes smaller dogs are quicker to move away than larger dogs. As an example my OH's aunt fell over her GSD when she turned quickly and broke her hip. When she recovered she went back home with her dog but was much more careful about where the dog was when moving around. But check out the seniors I'm sure the right dog for your Nan will be there.

Favourite in this household too - for the dog that is!! Always such a variety too, big ones, little ones, fat ones, thin ones. :D

Happy Birthday Daisy!!

I agree! Emotional needs of the human side of the relationship seem to often outweigh the emotional and physical needs of the animal. Cute, small, dependent puppy makes you feel good, that often all changes with adolescence.

One of the beaches nearby often has a fence with little "gifts" strung on it. I guess the dog does his doings on the way to the beach and there are no bins nearby so it's strung up and collected on the way back. Or at least you hope it is.

Weird Behaviour From 5 M/o Puppy
Jigsaw replied to Seita's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He doesn't like it but doesn't growl at me. He will attempt to take his food away if I approach him while he's eating but if I call him he will come away from the food. I think it must be a game to him, especially considering he went to the effort to bring his bone next to the teddy bear despite the bone and the teddy being at other ends of his pen. I just wonder why he does it? If he will come away from the food when you call him, well done, if you can reward him with a nice piece of high value food such as raw chicken, meat it will reinforce this behaviour even more. I'd probably remove the teddy while he's eating so he doesn't rehearse the behaviour. I'm not a great one for petting dogs while they eat, I'd be wary of anyone trying to get close to me while I'm eating, especially stuff I really enjoy like chocolate . You could try putting one piece of food in his bowl at a time, while he sits, releasing him to eat and then asking him to sit again, putting more food in the bowl releasing him to eat, rinse and repeat till meal finished if you are concerned about his behaviour while eating his meal. -
That's a really sweet video. Hope Peppi's feeling much better now.

Sheep Dog Training In The Hunter Valley
Jigsaw replied to bret's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've not heard of anyone who does herding on a regular basis in the Hunter region. If you do hear of someone who's doing let me know as I know a few people who might also be interested. -
Just in case nobody has any idea of what I'm talking about!!

Dogs are much better at training us to get the response they desire than we realise!!

Reminds me of the Dad's Army intro with big arrows and little arrows!

Great thread Vickie and lovely vids too! I'm sure Chloe and Poppi will be a great team!

Wow, what a scare you had and how well you managed to handle the situation under such stress. Nekhbet has some great advice about what to do when confronted by a dog like this. I hope the dog is found and found soon. It's just too scary to contemplate what could have happened.

Meds with some behavioural modification training may assist in reducing the behaviour but a complete vet check to rule out any other causes both neurological and physical first would be my first stop.

I missed the bit about her rolling over before - (oops). Sounds like she needs some confidence building work. I'd stay working with the food for the moment if she's happy to accept the food. I didn't realise she was in the pound either so if she's a low drive dog this may suppress her drive to chase, if she has any, even more.
