go to Bunnings and then go to the compost bin aisle. there you will find compost bins that are made out of wire and they are flat packs. use the compost bin sides as the pen. buy as many as you need to make the size of pen that you want. also, do a search on this forum as there are lots of threads with the bunnings compost bin solution and some even have pics. i bought 2 and they are great and they are under $30 for one so for $60 i had a huge puppy pen. best of all, when you are finished using it as a puppy pen, they can be used for their original purpose.......compost bins

Behavioural Problem I'm Stuck With...
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Bindii's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
yes what he thinks is if i whinge the car door gets opened. its just like training them to stay on a crate without whinging. you never open the door until they are quiet. i would wait until you see him relax and use a word to mark the behaviour. do this a few times then test him in anywhere but the car and keep practising until he can calm down outside the car. when he can put him into the car and use the word and he should be good. hope this makes sense -

Behavioural Problem I'm Stuck With...
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Bindii's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i am not a behaviourist but i do watch cesar. it seems that Hugo is in control (or thinks he is in control) of the start/end of the drive and the beginning of the exciting part of the trip. maybe outside of the car you need to teach him to wait calmly for something exciting so he can practise calm submissive behaviour. maybe have a word for it when he manages to do this and reward him. then maybe when you are in the car and then use the word he might understand what you want. i use the word "wait!" and jaxx stops immediately what she is doing and goes into a calm submissive state. she doesn't move so i can go up to her and she will stay. this has saved her as once i was walking her on a retractable leash (never again!!) and she got spooked and ran around a pole and that pulled the leash from my hand and she was running in the middle of the road away from me. i yelled "wait!" and she stopped. i was so happy. i also use "wait!" when she is getting too excited and she behaves in exactly the same way. sorry for the long post. -

Help....whippet Having Phantom Pregnancy
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to ~Debs~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
why is it that some people get so upset when people here are only trying to help? the OP's response is beyond me -
i tend not to wrestle as it seems to "rev" dogs up too much. however i am happy to play with them chasing my hands and trying to catch them as long as the dont use their teeth. its hard to explain this game tho!

i taught my dog an "emergency" word which is wait. when i call this pout she stops whatever she is doing and waits until i come over to her. she doesn't moved once i call this word. this means that if anything bad happens i know she will stop immediately. this has worked on more than one occassion. once she got spooked and races down the street (long story) but when i called wait she stopped immediately and i went over to her.

Then go with your heart, and honestly, don't stop to think how YOU will handle it, focus on how the dog is right now, and that you would be doing the kindest thing for him no matter how you feel. You need to focus on the dog, not yourself, it will make it a lot easier. sorry, i think you may have misunderstood... I meant i dont know what i will do without him - im sure everyone whos ever owned a dog can say that - once u fall in love with them u just cant imagine life without them... please dont judge me or be harsh with me on this topic, its very hard for me and i'm posting this because of that... please don't take this the wrong way but i don't think anyone is being harse, you may be a bit more sesitive at the moment. what struck me in your post was that you said that the vet should let you know when it was time to give him his wings. i think this is where your dilema is...your vet isn't saying this. you live with your dog every day and only you know what he is going through. it seems to me that you know it is time for his wings. i wish you all the best in this really difficult time

Vaccinations - Input Needed
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Missymoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i soooo agree with you. i have had so much trouble from my vets because for the last 20 years have had the above vac schedule. i look after my dogs really well and they know that so they always want to tell me that they don't understand why i won't vaccinate. when i tell them that they know that my dogs don't get sick and they also know that they haven't been vaccinated as they prescribe so what do they say to that, they tell me i am just lucky!!!!!! oh well time will help i guess. -
Vaccinations - Input Needed
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Missymoo's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i agree with the vac schedule but where i have problems is when the obedience club or the boarding kennels require proof of vaccinations. what do you do then? will a titre test be enough? -
i still have one of Jaxx's baby teeth, i found it on the floor and kept it....i know, i am weird!!!!

What council area are they in Teebs? I found the exact information that Jaxx's buddy posted on my councils website maybe they can check theirs? the info is directly from the Act so it would apply to all councils. here is the link to the full Act http://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/LZ/C/A/DO...ACT%201995.aspx

Is it the "not breeding" that causes the entire dogs to have health issues? I hadn't heard that. i think that with bitches they can have more problems if the keep going into heat but are never bred. i can't remember what the condition is called though, sorry. i don't think males have the same issue.
-
i do not think this is correct. there is a dog and cat management Act that has a list of prescribed breeds: prescribed breed means any of the following breeds: (a) American Pit Bull Terrier; (b) Fila Braziliero; © Japanese Tosa; (d) Dogo Argentina; (e) Presa Canario; that requires the following: require a person who owns or is responsible for the control of a dangerous dog or a dog of a prescribed breed to produce evidence that the dog is desexed; additionally: 45B—Specific duties relating to dogs of prescribed breed (1) A person who owns or is responsible for the control of a dog of a prescribed breed is guilty of an offence if, while not effectively confined to premises of which that person is the occupier, the dog— (a) does not have a muzzle securely fixed on its mouth so as to prevent it from biting any person or animal; or (b) is not under the effective control of a person by means of physical restraint. Maximum penalty: $2 500. Expiation fee: $210. (2) A person who owns or is responsible for the control of a dog of a prescribed breed is guilty of an offence if the dog is not desexed. Maximum penalty: $2 500. (3) It is a defence to a charge of an offence against subsection (2) if it is proved that the defendant believed on reasonable grounds that the dog was desexed. (4) A person who sells or gives away, or advertises for sale or to give away, a dog of a prescribed breed is guilty of an offence. Maximum penalty: $2 500. the best bet is to look up the Act which is where i got the info from http://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/LZ/C/A/DO...ACT%201995.aspx

I wouldn't take a puppy anywhere where he might be involved in any 'rough and tumble' with a much larger dog or even a small one for that matter, small puppies are easily hurt and allowing any sort of rough play at this age is simply asking for trouble. There is absolutely no guarantee that the other dog will back off if the puppy protests, in fact a squealing puppy may even awaken prey drive in some dogs. A bad experience at this age could affect your puppy for life. Thank goodness for your reply Miranda....I almost choked on my pasta dinner when I read KK's recommendation. AGREED! definately agree. i have an adult dog and i would never take her to a dog park because i can't control the dog interactions, let alone a 10 week old puppy!!!!!!!!!!!

Gross profit is a far cry from net profit. Go back to the example I gave about the cost of a cup of coffee. Given you have several close friends who are vets then I am surprised that you are so determined to run them down in this thread and essentially accuse vets of price gouging to plump their own pockets up when surely their opinions would not be too dissimilar to those in this thread from the vet industry. Gross profit is a good starting point especially when have an accountant. The vets I know are well off and they joke about the charges. One gave an injection to horse and said that buys the back door to my new surgery. They have also stated to me that the load up the bills of customers that rub them up the wrong way. then the vets you know are unehtical.
