  1. hmm now thats an idea. i think that the rspca is confused on one hand they are a regulator/investigator/punisher and on the other they are an enabler/charity/helper. i dont think one organisation can do both well. maybe the primary industry should be the regulator and the rspca goes back to being the charity.
  2. that is indeed the question. i am not sure that another organisation needs to be found, what i think is that the RSPCA needs an overhaul, clearer processes and transparency in their day to day work. i also think the structure needs to be changed, ie there should be an appeals process, and oversight of the organisation, in other words they should stop being a law unto themselves.
  3. What she said. And consider, if you will, the happenings of this nature which never make the papers. I hope this vile story is being considered by ACA or TT i think it needs to be more than just this situation, i think an expose would be required to get all the issues aired...now who knows an investigative journalist that they can point in the right direction?
  4. that is amazing work Ash, very very impessive, especially if it only took a minute or 2. wow
  5. Absolutely. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. and this is what has happened here. we can watch them but who can or how can we get this sort of thing changed? who do they answer to?
  6. i am going to be really unemotional and boring but this is not about the horse nor the foster carer, it is about processes that either arent there or are being ignored, or not understood. in no business would the absolute failure of process as outlined in the article here be acceptable practise. when dealing with living beings, it behoves any organisation to strive for "best practise" in their work to make sure that they are doing the best they possibly can. it appears to me that there is a systematic, systemic, catastrophic failure of process within this RSPCA office.
  7. this is so outrageous i find it so totally hard to believe. what a farce and the poor horse lost its life and its carer will be haunted by this because of incompetance. this is so awful i am lost for words.
  8. this is not the first Adelaide restaurant that has refused to allow a guide dog entry. maybe these people knew this and just wanted to make sure that the people working there knew the dog was coming in. maybe they thought it would be easier to explain before the dog was in the restaurant
  9. i would like to try this but i think it is a very slow way to get anything. nowadays ordering through the web is not hard to setup. how long does it take to be delivered? are their any other stockists?
  10. i made it a game. in the hallway, had dog on leash, i held leash, i was very excited and dropped food around my feet and called puppy's attention to food. then once she got the idea, i put the food further out. before long she was walking on the lead. i didnt bother too much bout loose leash walking until she knew that walking on the leash was fun.
  11. the white border pulls the dogs face out a bit, makes it pop more
  12. No doubt you've seen it but I've seen video of a dog cued to go to his bed (rather than rush to the door barking) when the doorbell was used. Reliability occured VERY quickly. now that would be terrific for most dog owners to know how to do, me included Actually the manners minder food dispenser was developed mostly for this and it's remarkable how quickly it works. thank you i will look into this.
  13. my vet gives options, each of which cost more. i tend to pay more for the GA as i have a brachy breed so for me it would cost about the same as the amount you quoted

  15. and there you go again insulting people reading this thread. backhanded apologies with a sting in the tail
  16. It's just the purely positive trainers, is it? aidan, you are right, everyone uses emotive language. i think i am just concerned that the use of say check chains is called abuse and punishment by PP trainers which is highly emotive and quite difficult to move forward from.
  17. what has bothered me with this discussion and others i have been part of is that the pourely positive trainers use emotive language as PF so eloquently explained it and that they see aversives as "punishment" therefore "bad" and that the use of "punishment" is the easy way out for lazy trainers. it is the last one that gets me annoyed. any trainer worth their salt thinks long and hard before they decide which approach to use with a dog. they examine the dog, the handler, the identified problem, then they plan what course of action they will take and if the plan isnt working the reassess and try something else. i am sure that a soft dog would not get a harse aversive because this would be counter productive, and remember, they have been brought in to help fix a problem and they are getting paid for it. their success and reputation is based on problems getting fixed. it is not the purely positrive training theory that i have a problem with, it is the people who think that is the one and only way to train and that any other way is abusing a dog. this is the height of arrogance and will most certainly not win over my heart or mind

  19. I've been told that dogs secrete something that smells a bit like corn chips between their toes . . . it apparently serves some sort of appeasement function in dog communication. My dog trainer/friend told me this . .. I think she learned it in NDTF classes. I wouldn't bother trying to wash it off . . . just stop smelling your dog's feet if you don't like the smell. txs for the info, i didnt worry about the smell as she didnt seem bothered with it neither was she excessively licking. i must be weird but i like the smell
  20. I don't know how anyone could claim a head collar or anti pull harness are not aversive, they have to be, otherwise they wouldn't work. I personally don't see them as any different to using a prong or a check chain or a martingale or e-collar or any other correctional tool. i totally agree with this statement. they are an aversive.
  21. yep the old corn chip smell. i think it means he has a yeast infection. malaseb will fix it up. my boston has this sometimes
  22. Probably about the time being free shaping your dog to interact with a box became more important to some folk than teaching it an effective recall. Your average dog owner will never free shape anything. When you walk into a training class of new handlers, it pays to bear that in mind. I'm no fan of training for training's sake. I'm happy for my dogs to be dogs within accepted boundaries as set by me. and this is what most people want. imagine someone going to a trainer for help with an unruly dog and the trainers says, "i have a really good way to help your dog. now we wont punish your dog ever, what we will do is work out what is the best way to get your dog to behave. now this will take time, probably say 20 sessions with me who can teach you how to really understand your dogs non-verbal cues and then you of course will need to put significant time in training and watching your dog between our sessions" by this stage you have lost people and they think you are going to rip them off cause this is going to be very expensive. most people want a reasonably well trained dog that can live in harmony with their families...that is it, no more no less.
  23. and remember that you can get pups from NZ as well as there is no quarantine restrictions, you can exoect to wait as you have found out.
  24. well here is an old miners trick. put egg creme shampoo on the windscreen and it wont fog up. the miners uised this on their goggle to stop them fogging. i think and soap would work. for instance, get a new bar of soap and rub it over the inside of the windscreen and polish it off with a cloth. shouldnt fog up anymore.
  25. i used the gepps cross club for a while and was happy with it
