  1. it is great to know that she has this prey drive and she is so focussed cause it is excellent for obendience or trialling or whatever you want to do with her....just be prepared to find some dead birds one day...i have to pick dead birds up a few times a month
  2. tried the link it diodnt work for me :-(
  3. So quit insulting other people's informed decisions to feed what works best for their dog.
  4. It is the same with dogs that vomit up certain varieties of processed food, if they did that you would change brands right! If a dog had issues with raw food you feed it, it is the same as allergies in humans and an elimination diet would be the best avenue to isolate which part of the diet wasn't suited to the dog. So you start simple and bring in different elements one at a time so that you know what is best for your dog. By taking an easy way out and simply feeding processed I cannot see that being good at all. Would you feed a child that didn't like vegetables McDonalds for every meal? I don't think many would say yes to that one. i really dont need a lecture and i do think you come across as rude and patronising. all foods have been tried and NO raw is tolerated, no type of meat, not pig, not beef, not chicken, not lamb, not turkey, not duck, not roo, not rabbit....nothing
  5. well what if you have a dog that throws up when it eats raw food and bones...yes they do exist and yes i know of one. if they didnt eat kibble they would starve. my dog is fed on raw but for this other dog it doesnt work. that why i say feed your dog on what it does best on. no one can say any one type of food works for all dogs
  6. understood, that is why i could never be a breeder and why i do have so much respect for the people who put their time, energy and emotion into giving me the joy in my life that comes from my dogs.
  7. agreed stormie. when i was using kibble i always looked for the products that had meal as they had a higher concentration of meat. i think what people feed dogs can be very emotional, from all sides of the equation, but IMO whatever the dog does well on is the right food!!
  8. most people use dry kibble because it is easy and they may not know of any alternatives. you cannot use the arguement that because so many use it it must be good becasue this is an illogical argument. some dogs do really badly on kibble some dont. processed dog food is not good for all dogs.
  9. i would bring the puppy home 8 weeks old minimum as they learn a lot 6-8 weeks from other litter mates re bite inhibition. i thought breeders werent allowed to let puppies go before 8 weeks?
  10. I understand your frustration Ellz but not all buyers are idiots. Some of us take very good care of our dogs and provide them with plenty of love, training, exercise and a good life. The breeders of my dogs seem pleased with my care of the pups they sold me. They're happy to take my recommendation of any puppy buyer I refer to them. I'm darn careful about the people I refer though. I wouldn't refer anyone to a breeder if I didn't know them well enough to know they would take good care of the puppy. If I refer a buyer to a breeder I feel partly responsible for the pup they bring home. I think you're speaking out of sheer frustration because I couldn't imagine you would rather euthanise your perfectly healthy puppies and deny them a chance at life. You're an experienced breeder and can pick the wheat from the chaff with your puppy buyers. Your gut instinct would be well honed. i agree. statements like "I think I'd rather euthanase every puppy that I don't keep for myself" are fuel for the fire for people that dont understand the heartache and work that goes into breeding good dogs. because if this really is what you mean then i will be insulted as i take very good care of my dogs and there are more people like me than the ones who are not doing the right thing.
  11. Hi Aussie lover Might be worth asking all the same questions that you would when buying any other puppy of known heritage , do the parents have health clearance for inherited conditions as we are talking poodles and labrador they have different issues so you would need at least eye certified clear hips scored within the tolerances for both poodles and lab and elbows done as well think there is a DNA marker test done with breeding poodles "am not 100% sure as not my breed ) , registered purebreeds have to have this done before breeding so this would be my min requirment for any other dog where both parents are known . General health history of parents and grandparents as well. Best way to know if you would buy a dog from anywhere is to talk to visit and use your own gut feeling as to how healthy and well adjusted your pet may be should you buy from there . I would suggest to the friend that should they wish to buy they should require the same testing as for a pure puppy as they appear to be paying pet purebreed price. As to the ethics and standards of the business in question this is clearly a business but the only way to know if it reflects what you consider good animal husbandry or not is to visit , in saying that it is not unusual for breeders to request visits by appointment only we all have times where visitors are not appropriate for lots of reasons and most kennels are attached to a persons home so do drop in is not encouraged. I am not a supporter of designer doggies a mut is a mut I have 2 one from the AWL and one was a dumped pup both are very nice dogs, I am a little suprised at the claim of no shed on all their pups one of the reasons that they did not continue to breed them was that the coat was not predictable even after I think 5 generations , so are they culling the incorrect coat types ? is a question that I would like to ask , if not what do they do with them ? as the variation in coat is very high. Most breeders breed for the next in the chain of a planned outcome , break even is a hope profit is unusual, most breeders would like to register as a business but the ATO takes a dim view of business that loses money 4 years out of five LOL good luck but if people are determined then the best you can do is arm them with as much info and warning signs as you can cheers please remove their link from your post also as it is not allowed to be on here
  12. Everyone always picks on me. Actually today I had the curtains opened, the blinds up and, boy, did I get some photos. My Gussy Cat was in the front yard and Renny loves cats ---- to chase. He had pulled all the couch cushions down and was standing right up against the window. HOWEVER, my #$%^&E%#$% computer won't read the card. It has been only reading spasmodically ever since I took it down to where I purchased it for something else that was wrong. It (the computer) is now out of warranty. :D I'll give it another go tonight. there is a rule that a warranty does not end at say 12 months if you have a reasonable expectation that it should last longer. additionally a warranty can be extended of they have not fixed ot up properly in the first place. take the puter back and ask them to fix iut properly for you under warranty
  13. my vet recommended the parvo anf kc done yearly so thats what i did
  14. thank you for the update Toohey. we appreciate the updates. this has been one of the most respectful threads i have seen on DOL and i am sure that translates to respecting Jed's privacy with everyone thankful that Jed is taking steps forward. keep moving forward Jed!!
  15. and remember that rats run along the floor next to a wall cause they cant see very well and use the wall to guide them maybe it is the same for mice so put the traps next to the wall
  16. i think it is sold at pet stock as well i seem to remember seeing it there once
  17. aw cw_ew what a bummer. now you know he looks cute no matter what happened BUT i would take a picture of him befpre and after and take it to the groomer owner/manager and tell them how unhappy you are.
  18. when they teethe their teeth may hurt them but for my dogs i made sure i didnt teach them to be fussy. so i put their food down and after 15 minute i picked it up and if they havent eaten anything too bad. i keep doing this with every meal and eventually they eat what is put down. not one has died of starvation yet!!!
  19. i have done a quick google and most say it is very low numbers of dogs get testicular cancer. what i did find interesting is that dogs with undescended testicles are 13 times more likely to get testicular cancer than dogs with descended testicles.
  20. To add to that bedazzled, once a male is sporting trained, well controlled and obedient by 18 months to 2 years old and entire, apart from an accidental mating, desexing IMO is no longer a behavioural factor of benefit at all once sporting obedience is established. BB what do you think of the school of thought that it reduces/eliminates the risk of testicular cancer I have never had any of mine suffer from testicular cancer over 7 entire males or personally know anyone who's dog has suffered, but it does occur and desexing will eliminate that risk. I would ultimately like to know how often testicular cancer does occur to assess the risk properly. I have a feeling that testicular cancer is more rare than common, but it would be better to know the facts. agreed i may have to research this
  21. Small/medium dogs are believed to mature earlier than large dogs and apparantly doesn't impact as dramatically desexing at 6 months. Desexing does eliminate the risk of testiclular cancer in the male dog, but I don't know how risky testicular cancer is likely to occur. I guess a mastectomy would reduce the risk of breast cancer......but where is the line a bit OT but now that they have found the gene some women who are in high risk groups are doing just that. i would be curious to know the incidence of testicular cancer in entire male dogs as it is critical in eveluating the risk. yep i wasnt too worried about getting my girl desexed at 6 months although if she was a large breed i would have done 2 seperate ops.
