  1. for the holding on i work on they can hold for 1 hour per month they are old so your puppy would only hold on for 2 hours max if it is 2 months old.
  2. will the OP look after the puppies for their life time? will she take back any puppies that need to be rehomed? will she gaurantee their health and pay for any genetic problems that arise? will she support her puppy buyers? if not then she is a BYB and should not be encouraged as some of her puppies may end up in the rescue/pound system and some of the puppy owners may face heartache due to the health of their puppies and they may be on their own with no support.
  3. x2. this will change all slides to the same but you only do the work once....more efficient than changing each slide and easier to make changes anytime later as well
  4. I wouldnt take my dog anywhere that puts us a whole blogg bagging out another local dog training school. A bit arrogent. totally agree, and i dont believe it is true that "they have all the solutions of puppy training and how to stop unwanted behavior" and not to be too picky but web sites that have grammer and spelling mistakes do not inspire me with confidence either.
  5. Beautiful looking girl Alasse , very nice. People do tend to come under fire a bit using Halti's on GSD's especially I have noticed quite often, I think because the GSD is a highly chosen breed amoungst serious trainers due to their intelligence, versatility and trainability and are regarded as a breed that don't need those types of training props that perhaps a lesser intelligent breed may need???. I have seen many times a dozen dogs pass by a working dog enthusiast wearing a halti and nothing is mentioned, but a GSD on a halti it's like "oh poo" get that silly thing off it's head :D Halti's and GSD's do often create some unwanted attention what nonsense.the comment has been made for al dogs on a long leash and a halti. people have a view that hatlis can cause damage to a dogs neck regardless of breed. do a search before you make comments about what people have in their minds
  6. i "think" the unley vet does this. maybe call and ask them in case my memory is bad
  7. thank you so much for this wonderful update. i may need to change my avatar
  8. it comes across in an excellent manner there is a difference between a natural friendship bonded by a mutual respect and love of a breed which you seem to have formed than a forced requirement from an overbearing controlling breeder
  9. I agree, I think it is a little beyond what is needed or appropriate. I never even questioned if they work. I did ask if they rented or owned though (or lived with parents or whatever) as this was pertinent to assessing the ability to keep a dog into the future in my view. absolutely appropriate as this can impact on the dogs circumstances as it can be difficult finding a rental that will take dogs. when my daughter rented if there was ever any issues then she and or the dogs would be more than ok to come back home with me as i would never let dogs be surrendered due to her accommodation so sometimes there is support that backs upthe puppy owner as well.
  10. luckily i have found breeders who suit what i want and i suit what they want and they are very good breeders so i do not accept that requiring a life long friendship with puppy owners is a prerequisite for a good breeder
  11. i think a couple of one on one sessions with a good trainer will pay off dividends, more than if you send your dog away. when you are both learning together you will be bonding more as well which is all good.
  12. maybe a couple of one on one sessions with a private trainer (ask here for recommendations) may give you enough to then progress to the higher distractions of the training club. dont be too embarrassed, i have had pound dogs that were very badly behaved but that is only because they didnt get the best start in life and we are trying to set that right!!
  13. whilst i acknowledge that breeders put their heart and soul into breeding puppies and that they must make sure they are not giving puppies to inappropriate people, ie BYB's, i think some breeders forget that money is exchanging hands and not all puppy owners want such a close relationship with the breeder and vice versa. i think this shows that there needs to be a lot of questions asked by both breeders and potential owners to ensure they are both on the same page. there are certainly some breeders i would never buy a puppy from and it has nothing to do with the quality of the pups but a lot to do with their attitude towards the new owner.
  14. x2 and all breeders i have ever had contact with are more than happy for me to have their puppies because there is more than a work phone number that makes a good dog owner. i am amazed at some of the responses to this topic.
  15. you would also need to really trust the trainer and agree with their methods
  16. wow, i imagine you have trouble getting people who meet those exacting standards. i would not give my work number as i have a mobile which is on 24/7 so no need for my work number to be on a microchip. it is also a problem if i change jobs because i would then have to update the microchip info each time. the more i hear about rescue the less i would get a dog from them.
  17. it may work for some dogs and owners depending on the issues. but IMO the owner needs training too not just the dog
  18. but employer references? im sorry but this goes beyond reasonable questioning. how many good people would be put off by this? i understand that people have to be careful but i hope not paranoid.
  19. what i found that worked for me was to crate train the puppy, do not let it have freedom inside, ie leash it to you and feed at set times because what goes in comes out after a set time. then you totally control the environment and the mistakes become fewer and the successes more frequent
  20. x2 Perhaps you should google the breed temperaments of some of these breeds - one website states that the Caucasian Ovcharka to have agression to people and other other animals (the family and the animals in the family ok) but visitors to your house beware. The sites also state over and over again - not the breed for anyone that doesn't have experience with large powerful breeds, must socialise them more so than other breeds if you are going to have one that isn't dog aggressive. While I don't want to single out other breeds, have you had a look at what these dogs can do in the wrong hands - I know you will all say that any dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands, I agree, but I would rather face a rottie than one of these in danger mode. It's not the people on these sites that are irresponsible. Can you imagine one of these dogs, purchased from a byb, put in a yard, never socialised, rarely or never exercised - what do you think will happen to that dog? We are not talking about a medium or large dog, we are talking about a giant breed with extreme power. I don't see a part in suburban life for these dogs. As a guardian dog of stock where you know that no person will ever get attacked, then ok. My family has a farm, and we have had numerous times people wander onto our land (which is clearly marked Private Property) - what if we had one of these dogs - I'm sure they would attack and the result would not be pretty (plus probably a large law suit to follow). I'm just stating that I would hate to see these dogs in the wrong hands and I don't feel that they deserve to live in suburbia. I have one of these breeds and generalisations of the breed and the type of people that own them are disgraceful and proves why ridiculous BSL laws are made. I would suggest rather than just Googling information that you take the time to try and meet responsible owners of these breeds. My "man eating killer" has been taken as a demonstration dog and handled by students, lives with a pom cross (and meets other dogs) and while I fully appreciate his breed tendencies and make allowances for them in our life to deem his breed as dangerous is very misguided. I am very passionate about the chosen breed I have and if I just Googled information on the breed without bothering to contact people about them I would have missed out on the absolute joy of owning one of the most wonderful animals I have ever met. And yes I agree they are dangerous in the wrong hands but if you would prefer to take on a rotti and think the outcome would still be ok well goodluck with that. Me I prefer to analyse risks, observe behaviour and try to avoid getting put in that situation. There will come a time when maybe rotti and dobes (and their crosses) may come up for BSL then perhaps people that own these breeds will suddenly not support BSL and you have previously stated that your rxd is untrustworthy around other small animals and would kill furry animals if given the chance. This is why I have said that dogs should be judged on their individual behaviour and that of their owners not just their breed full stop. My neighbours cocker spaniels chase and try to kill my pets however my CASD is happy to have guinea pigs crawl on him. Yes I am responsible we have our farm gates padlocked and have signs stating that there is No Unauthorised Entry, Flock Guardian on Premises and when we have visitors he is removed from the area but any responsible dog owner should protect their home/visitors and animals regardless of their breed. The articles that I have googled are from registered breeders of your breed from around the world - can't get much better info than a registered breeder. I have never stated that my dog would kill another furry animal or is untrustworthy, I certainly keep an eye on her, but she is not a problem to other dogs - only the small ones that go for her while their owners stand back and think it is funny or cute. I do keep her on a lead at the dog park if there are little ones that go for the bigger dogs. (We were at the beach on Saturday and she walked through a huge flock of seagulls that didn't move away without flinching!) I'm not stating that your are an irresponsible owner - quite the opposite in fact. I'm just stating that these dogs in the wrong hands in suburbia would be a disaster. Your dog is obviously well handled and you allow him to do the job that he was bred to do, which is great. The information that I have read from these registered breeders states that these dogs will accept family members and other animals that are part of their family (regardless of whether it is a guinea pig, rabbit, cat etc). As I have stated several times in this thread, I don't have a problem with a responsible owner having these breeds, it's the irresponsible ones that will cause the problem, which will cause an issue with the breeds on the list. The Danish govt must have had sound reason to ban the breeds on their list in their country. one day none of us will be able to own any dogs, have you thought about that? because bsl is not based on logic at all and for each web site that you can quote i could find another that disproves what you found. i am all for responsible ownership but banning breeds will not fix that
  21. thank goodnes you went with your instincts. i am sure all will go well and linc will be back to normal quicker than you think
  22. sorry aboput your loss. it is very surprising the vet did an autopsy and found nothing
  23. The Ovtcharkas (which quite a few fall under this breed) are known for their very aggressive nature. I've seen footage of these dogs and not only can they aggressive (towards humans as well as other dogs), but the sheer size of them can well be a recipe for disaster. They must have some stats in their country for this ban. runs off to wake up Jake and tell him that he is a danger to world as we know it Damn now the rabbits and lambs will have no one to cuddle and keep warm with in Winter. But I'm assuming you are a responsible owner???? You would have to agree that these breeds in irresponsible hands is a disaster waiting to happen. ANY dog in the wrong hands can be a disaster waiting to happen. singling out breeds does nothing to help reduce dog attacks, especially when mutts are involved....how do you ban them?
  24. my dog doesnt do dog doors even if it is raining outside and its her only way in and she hates thew cold and wet. however, i took off the plastic swinging part and put a cloth over ir and she uses it happily now. i think the plastic bit is too 'heavy" for her.
