  1. the laws in SA are that if a cat without a collar comes into my yard i can legally trap it and take it to the pound. if the cat has a collar then it must go back to its home which i have done. this procedure does not harm the cat. i contain my dog, i register her, i am a responsible dog owner. i have friends who have paid thousands of dollar to contain their cats because they are responsible cat owners. i want all cat owners to be responsible at their expense not mine. if my dog was wandering at large she would be caught and impounded, whats so wrong about doing this to a cat that enters my yard?
  2. i am hard on cats and cat owners. if they were responsible and kept their cats contained to their yard then i wouldnt be as harsh. it my yard not theirs and i do not again want to stick my hand in cat shit when i am gardening
  3. i trap them and if the cat has no collar on i am within my legal rights to take it to the pound if the cat has a collar on i take it to where it lives (still in the trap) and tell the owners that i am trapping feral cats that are coming into my property and their cat got caught so they need to keep it inside. this has always worked for me.
  4. glad he is ok and glad you had insurance arent they fickle creatures, if we try to give them a tiny pill they spit it out but then they can eat a 4cm stone no problems...go figure ;) glad all is well
  5. Thanks JB Maggie is beautiful. What about me? Never mind...dont answer that. I know I am no spring chicken :D you look gorgeous too!!! i just have a thing for mastiff's so all my focus was on her. she does love you
  6. maggie is gorgeous what a stunner she is great photos
  7. i have been thinking of this and was wondering if there were any natural remedies that might assist. i have done a bit of a search and found the following: -activated charcol can help reduce the effects of poisoning -maybe something to boost the liver function to process the poison more quickly -maybe a general vitamin before giving anything though maybe call the vet and see if there is anything else you can give the dog to help reduce the effects?
  8. i am so very sorry and hope that a miraculous event happens and both dogs remain well
  9. if rescues are going to charge for home visits then they would need to document exactly what their criteria was and what passes and what fails. this would be required to protect the rescue from charges of money making or taking money and not providing a dog. i think it would cause more problems. additionally, i dont think too many people would pay it.
  10. k9angel you are spot on. asking how long the dog will be left alone each day is more reasonable than asking if people work full time. people who do not work full time are not always at home.
  11. i think it is motion sickness, they see things moving and cant focus on them and then they get "dizzy" then sick. covering their eyes so they cant see works, wither the snood, or a covered crate of the fotwell, anything as long as they cant see things whizzing by. this worked for my car sick gsd
  12. Organisations are required by law to protect this information and work within the privacy act. So all you need to do is ask them how their organisation is structured and what is in place to protect your privacy. Normal businesses do not require their staff to undergo police checks just because they handle customer details. Common sense tells you not to hand over drivers licence or credit card to anyone without an ABN or other organisational credentials. ty greytmate i didnt know that. from some of the posts i have read on dol i was concerned that these procedures may not have been followed, it is good to know they are eta that catheroine.b's posts is exactly what people are talking about. i give up. some rescuers are not realistic and i would not ever rescue in case i got someone with such a narrow mind. my dog gets 15 hours with me and 9 alone, so what if i work full time. oh and thats the days that i dont work from home it means i can meet all her needs because money isnt an issue
  13. Good point Gayle K - and further to that (police check) if you supply your home address and answer yes work fulltime to said question how do you know where that information is stored and if it is kept in a secure location? As opposed to in a box somewhere in a shelf or worse tossed into a general bin when no longer required that anyone could access. Yet another home invasion last night not that far away so of course people get more and more cautious about security of personal info. this is the issue for me. with the information requested it would be very easy for someone to use this to break into the house or as identity theft. so the questions to be asked: how is this data stored? is there a secure place for all data storage? what is the rescues data policy, including how they manage non successful application data? who gets to read the info? do the people reading the info have a clear police check? personally, i would never give anyone who couldnt answer the above questions to my satisfaction my data.
  14. dont like it at all. the review for a boston is woeful. slowness to house train 4 to 6 months of consistant crate training? they are no harder than other dogs. oh hang on, they can be housetrained quicker if i buy the book ;) Jaxx was fully housetrained by 4 months old and just as easy as other dogs
  15. i am trying to organise to travel to melbourne on 9th of october so if that suits you i can transport the dog. i will firm up the plans in the next couple of days and let you know
  16. i am planning to when did you need the dog over there? eta not for a show for work
  17. some of these dogs look scared to me
  18. I don't actually want to see high sales of my breed or my partner's breed. They are not for your average pet owner and you need a certain degree of mentoring to successfully own one. I definitely don't want to see them sold in pet shops but DD's are irrelevant to that point of view. I am glad to hear that but it is unfortunate that not every breeder shares your sentiments in not wanting high sales of their breed. You've only got to look at the number of litters that some reg. breeders breed per year, that tells me that they're not breeding with the sole intent of "bettering the breed." that is a very broad and sweeping statement and i suggest that you best have the stats and experience to back this up.
  19. Yes I realise that it is a case of supply and demand hence that is why I mentioned that closing down puppy farms is the only true solution. The reason I get annoyed when DOLers discourage the purchase of pups from pet shops is that I have heard that pups that do not sell end up being put down and that thought really disturbs me. then you and i have a philosophical difference. i agree that the pups should not be bought and i believe anyone who buys a puppy from a pet shop is lining the puppy farmers pockets and helping them breed more dogs. this becomes even worse when that person is educated enough to know where the puppies come from.
  20. moselle , why are you on this forum if we irk you so much? your post was insulting and naive. buying the puppies just puts money into the puppy farmers hands and does nothing to stop the trade, they will just produce another puppy to replace the one sold. eta forgot this well said PF
  21. totally agree it can cause serious obsessive behavioural problems
  22. Surely there is ultrasound to detect the uterus and ovaries? good point. i never understood that the bitches would be operated on twice because they had no tattoo
  23. i dont want a big green tattoo (ugly imo) on my dogs ear so i see it every day i had a desexed gsd and the tattoo was placed high up on her ear and it looked awful
  24. i wonder why some dogs, no matter how many bones they get have build up on their teeth? my previous dog got bones every day and still needed her teeth brushed
