As cruel as it sounds, wouldn't the vast majority of pregnant mutts in pounds be better of euthanased along with their unborn pups? Cos once they've whelped, you no longer have one homeless dog, you've just added a whole lot more. i have often wondered about this too. why contribute to the problem by letting them whelp

there was very little food around and everything was rationed. it was thought that by euthanasing the dogs it would conserve the food for humans so pts your dog and you were helping the war effort...thats how people were convinced to do it

Yet you appear to have issues with breeders breeding to the standard??? I don't really have issues with breeders breeding to the standard, all I am saying is that if a particular breed of dog can produce colours that are not necessarily part of today's standard, then perhaps we should revise the standard to allow for certain colours but still opting to breed for soundness and all that the standard stipulates although as everyone knows....some purebreds do leave a little or is that alot to be desired as far as 'soundness' is concerned. you do know this is a pure breed forum? Yes I do know and appreciate the fact that it is a purebred forum but why are you SINGLING me out? I have been reading this forum for years long before I finally decided to join and many many posters even reg. breeders themselves talk openly about the lack of soundness in some breeds. Should I do a search for you and show you a fair few posts that discuss this as a reminder to you??? :D but you seem to ONLY talk about the lack of soundness and you have been quite disrespectful to breeders in general hence my comment. and while i am on it you have a habit of derailing threads so maybe we should stop allowing you to do that by not engaging with you if you go off subject

seriously, i wish breeders could earn a decent living from breeding puppies because as sure as i draw breath if they can't we will have less and less opportunity to purchase good puppies that have been bred well because it will all be too hard. i want breeders to be commercial.....commercial does not need to mean puppy farmer or not looking after their dogs. i am not a breeder i buy pets and i can assure everyone that i buy my pets based on the breed standard, that's how i work out what breed will suit my lifestyle and will be happy within my lifestyle....what else am i going to use?

i think education is key to changing behaviour, won't change them all and won't change everyone but it will change some

mine is both. she is a naturally well behaved dog and she has been trained.

This is what I want from a breeder and for the most part, that's what I got with my breeders. Trouble is how to you write that in ? yep i want what you 2 are having and i dont have any idea how this could be written. i suppose we could look at what it means to love a dog and puppies and what a person who loves them would do for them?

what i want from a breeder is someone who will socialise the dog properly in that critical period so the dog has a reduced chance of becoming fearful. i also want the dogs to be kept in good conditions and to have a good temperament and health tested. IMO these four things are the crux of what makes a good dog.

Those messages need to be simple and linked to good sources of information. Places like the Petcare Advisory Network offer a lot of ideas on how to do this. If once a year, the CC's organised open days with breed stalls, dog sports demos and lots and lots of handouts, it would be a start. However, to be quite frank, a lot of breeders lack the necessary communication skills to sell the message to folk who haven't got a clue. As I said, folk would need to park their own agendas (and egos) and work within a plan. Perhaps the first place to start might be to educate WITHIN the dog community about what the issues are and what needs to be done. I'd also like to see the CCs clean house. We all know there are registered puppy farmers :D: They also need to do better than turn their heads away when puppy buyers get ripped off - I get a sense at least locally that people realise we need to do better. We need to work on a community perception about what "better" is. Perhaps, as a start its as simple as an "INFORMATION" sign and a few folk decdicated to the task and willing to talk to members of the public at shows. A handout that covers what most of us consider as the basics of puppy buying would have a lot of value. again i agree 100%. we all need to be working to the one agenda. we can have differences but on some things we need to be united. maybe we need to run "train the trainer" types of sessions to teach breeders how to communicate the messages. the sessions could be free for any breeder who wants to learn. all policing regulations, legislation etc needs to be fully used before we ask for more because as you have pointed out, we are not utilising the powers we already have to clean up/manage this sector.

PF i agree. we need to find messages that win over hearts and minds and we need to use lots of channels to get the message through eta the NO puppy mills message has a lot of problems so IMO we need to talk about how the dpgs are kept the conditions and leave the puppy mills are bad messages out of it because we cant agree on a definition of a puppy farm

once the current laws are policed properly and we have a system that works properly then and only then should we be thinking of adding more laws. until then we need to educate and yes from kindy, in primary schools and in high schools look at how the kids now know how to recycle and that its a good thing. 20 years ago that idea would have been laughed at. so lets start looking at how we were educated and borrow from the best of them
