i would need something in there about the dogs and puppies having an enriched environment that meets their developmental needs eta i am not fixed in my view at all, what i want is something that works for the dogs
-
i could live with this as well
-
True and I am sure people can mull over that problem till the cows come home. It still has nothing to do with the ANKC taking a stand against large scale puppy farmers. I think this is why nothing in ANKC every gets solved. We do not focus in on one problem and solve it. Instead we keep throwing in other problems, so of course the solution will not solve all the other problems. i think it does have a point because until we agree or know what the baseline is we don't know who's breaking the rules

i believe someone could breed a few litters and do nothing for the development of the puppies so numbers don't make sense to me as a measure of animal welfare standards
-
for me it is about the quality of life the breeding animals and the puppies have. are their needs being met, are they meeting developmental stages i dont care how many puppies someone breeds as long as all the dogs and puppies are being looked after physically and psychologically at the correct level

yep sometimes we have to be really tough so our dogs are healthy, its bloody hard thought isn't it eta stay strong it is really worth it in the end

my boston was a bit pudgy so i cut her food in half and bulked it up with beans or pumpkin, she is fed a raw diet the weight dropped off and she didn't feel hungry because of the veggies which dont add any nutritional value to the diet. she now looks really trim and healthy and i am slowly upping her food until she seems to put a bit of weight on then i will drop it back a bit which should be the ideal amount to feed her. i dont think the amounts on the food packets are anywhere near the right amounts...i think they are deliberately more than a dog needs

maybe he is a low drive dog why do you want him to play fetch?
-
have you tried throwing something quite close to him first or trying to tease him a bit with a toy to get him interested in it?
-
i am being entertained as well

actua;;y fran you have a point,it is the shrieking unrealistic parents that i dont like, often their kids are just a reflection of the adults bad behaviour

my dog is higher on the food chain that hmans take these examples: you think a paedophile is higher on the food chain than my dog you think a murderer is higher on the food chain than my dog you think a drunk driver is higher on the food chain than my dog you think a rapist is higher on the food chain than my dog you think a criminal is higher on the food chain than my dog wow your values suck

And I'll be just as arrogant now and say these are my priorities in life: My dogs Myself My husband My extended family Not some stranger's kid. I devote some time every day to those first 4 things. I devote absolutely none to a stranger's kid unless it's in a news article that I'm reading, or a thread here about a member's child. Day to day - I dont think about some unknown child i like your priorities
-
it takes a huge amount of arrogance to come onto a dog forum and tell the members that a strangers children are more important than the members own dog/s

Why is it cruel to use a collar that "might cause harm" (even though there is no recorded evidence of harm - but plenty of attestation to its benefits) and therefore worthy of its use being banned, yet NOT cruel to use a collar/s that HAVE caused harm (and where there IS recorded evidence of harm) and which seem to deserve support from a certain number of *cough* well known orgs? This is the State we are in. Laws that don't make sense; don't make any difference to animal welfare (and can infact work against the very essence of the Act they are listed under); and which the Government cannot (evidenced by the fact they will not) answer to or explain. There is no figuring it. Many of these laws were bullied through and IMO the reason for this is politically based - nothing to do with wisdom or the "we care for dogs" factor. totally agree with you erny the law is an ass

greyhound or whippet?

ok i will be serious. i do not believe that there is anything offensive about asking a child if they have clean hands before they touch your dog. regardless of being called a child hater, i actually have 2 children and it would never offend me if you asked me or them this question but then again i brought my children up to be polite and respectful of people and animals. additionally, i used to get them to wash their hands after playing with the dog if they were going to eat (i have no idea why i did this but i did ;) ) so i am as confused as you are

;) :D ;) This post has taken me half an hour to type but I'll try to get it out without laughing too much. Did you ever see the thread a few years ago written by a guy who was totally incensed that all people on Dogzonline did was talk about dogs? Everyone just turned around and said - urmmmm it's a DOG FORUM He thought it was more important that we talk about the half nude photos he posted of himself than our own dogs. Now let me ask you...what is wrong about that picture??? He left. He didnt get the attention he wanted. I guess he would have been better off if he'd been a dog, not a person. I strongly suspect that he meant to type in 'dollforums' not 'dolforums'. i really did laugh out loud and splurk my tea over the keyboard at that LOTG how funny ;) :p

they probably never learnt how to wash their hands because when they were kids they didn't want to and the parents caved in :D
-
Yep. That's the frightening bit, isnt it. Imagine if Grumpy got really grumpy and broke through the fence and bit one of those kids. All hell would break loose. Sheridan was actually asking how to deal with the situation so that it was unlikely to occur. Far out some of the carry on in this forum is quite entertaining. I agree Raz, I think I might run back to OT.. it's safer in there! As for kids growing up thinking they are the centre of the universe... it isn't healthy, it isn't reality and it does nothing to help them grow into fully functional and successful adults. That to me is the crux of the kids vs dogs argument... yes you can train the dogs, and you are training a dog that is a dog and will always be a dog.... or (or indeed AND) you can teach the child, who will learn a lesson that will contribute to their ongoing development into adulthood. Even for someone who thinks that any given child is more important than any given dog should see the investment in educating the child rather than focussing solely on training the dog. totally agree, children need to know how to operate in the world otherwise they will be in for a shock once they get into the workplace.
-
god forbid that children's parents stop them from thinking they are so important that everyone must cater to their every need no matter how much it imposes on other adults
-
Arguing with Sheridan is something that happens to everyone sooner or later. Don't let it put you off, it doesn't mean anything. ;) Thanks, it's not having a difference of opinion that has completely repulsed me from this forum and the show scene, it's the mentality of the majority of the people who have commented - the disrespect and tactlessness they happily would display to another adult or a child, the clear fact that a lot of them are child haters and will always take a dogs side over an innocent childs - even to the point of laying the blame on the child for their dogs horrendously aggressive behaviour. (no wonder dogs get a bad rep when the owner just makes excuses for it) It's no wonder so many people are against purebred dogs, if I didn't know better I'd feel exactly the same way after how my family was treated at our first show (my husband also got daggers shot at him for patting a dog who had jumped up on him) and by the comments that have been made here. I'd much rather just have my happy 'pet' dogs than bother trying to show them, especially when people have pointed out that it is so stressful for them that it apparently drives them to aggressive behaviour. I believe in keeping the peace with neighbours etc by being obliging and doing what we can to make it better for them, for sure, but I would never ever place a greater value on my dog than a human being and it's this point that has made me 'overreact', and take these comments 'personally', using the terrible, forbidden CAPITAL LETTERS ;) . AGREED ;) oh, sorry, there go the capital letters again! :D What about the hygiene thing?? How do I kno that you, your child has not been patting a dog that has Kennel Cough??? Aside from that, my dog is my property an I have every right to dictate when, how and why you touch the beast. My dog is not public property????? I am normally more than happy to oblige but I have the right to refuse. Um, I think you'll find your dogs are more at risk of getting Kennel Cough from the judge's hands after he/she's gone over all the other dogs. No one is saying you have to let people pat your dogs, good grief Definitely! ;) I expected my son to be told that he couldn't pat the dog because it was "working", so to speak, but not to be rudely asked if his hands were clean! Sheridan, I'm glad your neighbours were so obliging and it is working out without dramas, I appreciate that you were only asking for suggestions to fix the situation - I guess I just have a bee in my bonnet when I perceive people to be picking on innocent children. ;) what hysterical rubbish. anyway, i can hate as many kids as i like, last i looked it wasnt against the law. i really dont like rude nasty dirty handed kids who seek out clean innocent dogs. :p eta...maybe i should hate the parents who brought them up so badly..

totally agree with the bolded bit in particular otherwise it is a waste of time and money
