Why don't you take a good look at the title of this thread and then what this forum is all about - PUREBRED DOGS - also read the forum rules as well here Forum Rules. You may then understand why this forum will ALWAYS promote PUREBREEDS as recognised by the ANKC. Many dolers have crossbreeds which are well loved and cared for with many being terrific dogs, and they are allowed to join this forum and participate in the discussions, but the fact remains this is a PUREBREED forum for promotion of PUREBREEDS with rules governing what is allowed to be promoted and discussed, pure and simple. :D x2 kyliestar, please make sure you are on the right forum for your interests :D

we need to find out what people want. i want a dog that doesn't bark walks on a loose leash doesn't rush other dogs or people will wait wont jump on people isnt da or ha has a good recall and more and i wont find all of this in obedience clubs eta mine does all of the above but i trained her myself because i have a lot of experience training my dogs to be well behaved

Rehoming High Drive Stafford

how incredibly unhelpful, condescending and rude -
to use myself as an example, i think there isn't enough information. i went to obedience for nearly a year so i was committed and jaxx passed but then it got boring (for her) and i didn't and still don't know of any other type of training in SA

the main training that pet owners think about is puppy preschool then maybe obedience. i went to obedience but gave up because all we did was paddock pounding......i don't think i am alone in that putting people off i think we need training for ownwers who want well behaved pets where the basics are taught and who don't want any more than that.

i also wonder about what liability the old owner would have if the dog was rehomed and killed again whilst in the new owners care especially when it has a history of killing animals? -

I asked the question as to what circumstances the dog has killed in. I think it's relevant and important as you are considering rehoming him. I think we can pretty much assume how life ended for the cat at it wasn't nice. I've got a high drive bitch that would kill a cat in an instant, so believe me I understand where you are coming from and what you are dealing with. I can't see how if you cannot manage him, that you think someone without the breed experience and the knowledge to manage a dog like that will cope. Providing him with a cat free home, will only limit his ability to kill, by taking away the opportunities. The drive will still be there and I have concerns for any new owner, it only takes an open front door, the kids to make a mistake or a cat to go by in a public place and catch them unawares. I don't think it's fair to place such responsibilites on any new family. They would need to be very aware of what's going on around them at all times and vigilant to the point of being paranoid when looking out for other animals. He may be fine in a one on one home, with no cats and a new owner who is willing to spend the time with a behaviourist, which I don't see as overkill, but the responsible thing to do. If he were mine, I'd be keeping him in his own run/kennel, with a roof on it and making sure that all cats were locked in cattery or enclosure when he's out being exercised. You can still provide him with the exercise and stimulation that he needs. He will have his regular outings to obedience and agility. I personally could not pass that responsibilty onto someone else and would never forgive myself if he harmed another animal after rehoming. If you feel you cannot meet his needs, then considering euthanising him, rather than passing the problem onto someone else. totally agree RSG -
Rehoming High Drive Stafford
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Mavriksbt's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Well I do, and she is accurate when she says he has a high prey drive. huski i am not trying to be difficult but the rest of us dont know and people's advice about this situation will tend to be conservative when it comes to rehoming high drive dogs and will err on the side of caution which i think is responsible. the op went off because they didnt like what they heard which does not help at all. -

Ok- that's dedicated! that's the thing, we have no idea of what the poster means when they say "high prey" drive. the dog needs a professional assessment before it gets let loose on people that may not have an idea of what they are getting into. i think not having that assessment is irresponsible of the current owner -

:thumbsup (my bolded bit..and I feel it's important .We ,as owners often interact with our dogs almost on a reflex level. We are SO familiar with their body language..that things just 'happen'..with hardly a thought on our part .A dog in a new environment, with unfamiliar people will not usually behave in the same manner, and new owners will not be aware of all the little postures and twitches ) and the dog with ours. my dog know when i am going to be doing some things. like i can getup a hundred times to make a cup of tea and go to the fridge for milk but she knows when i am going to get her food as well and then she follows me to the fridge and i dont feed her at a set time. -
What Questions Do You Have About Clicker Training?
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Paul Bright's topic in General Dog Discussion
The clicker is just a tool used to mark the desired behaviour you're wanting. At the end of the day, you'll still get great results using your voice or marker words like you've got with 'good' and 'yes', the clicker can help with timing it more precisly. Interesting what you've said about recognising their own clicker. If you look at 10 different sites/books, you'll get a bunch of different answers from them. Looks like it might not just be the clicker in and of itself, but the clicker and owner combined, creating a powerful training tool. i think a great trainer has consistency in their message and unfortunately you don't seem to have such consistency. i do have an issue with people hanging out a shingle as an expert with no training and often making serious training situations worse. i am at a loss as to what you are contributing to clicker or any other training with your mixed messages in fact it can be quite dangerous if you give out the wrong information -
What Questions Do You Have About Clicker Training?
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Paul Bright's topic in General Dog Discussion
Well why don't we start with these questions. Why can't you? Sound good. Again I don't have all the answers, so anyone elses feedback would be great too. Use of Clicker vs. Your Voice...A few things I found was that a clicker is useful becuase it gives a distict sound. Orginally I thought if you were out with other who are using clicker training too, that your dog would get confused with all the different clickers. Turns out that your dog can tell the difference between your clicker, and the persons next to you because of their sensitive hearing. Using a clicker will also allow you to immediately reward your dog for good behavior. A click is instantaneous – faster than verbal praises or commands – allowing you to give rewards more accurately. You are more likely to miss the moment when your dog is doing exactly the right thing you are training him to do. And being able to pinpoint the exact behavior you want to reward would mean that your dog can understand and learn faster. the wording above seems to have come from this website Paul http://www.aboutdogobedience.com/dog-clicker-training.php hope that's one of yours otherwise you should acknowledge your source -

Missing Link - Anyone Used It?
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to Stitch's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i used it because my cairn was old and on a very restricted diet and she did very well on it. with a smaller dog it doesn't work out too expensive but if its for a larger dog it would be quite pricey. i thought it worked well though -

As long as they are PIAA accredited, breeders can sell to pet shops and wholesalers. Code of Ethics for dogsnsw A Member shall not: (a) sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers or retail pet dealers, who are not accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA). I dont know what their process is if a breeder is caught selling to non PIAA members Sorry meant to say other than PIAA stores, was about to head in the tunnel on the train and typing in a rush lol. Have to agree with RSG though, probably do nothing. Which begs the question, why bother with the rule if it's not going to be enforced?? because everyone screams for more rules so in order to be seen as doing something crappy rules and laws are made then we suffer the consequences. thats why i dont want any more rules because we will just get a lot of nonsense ones. we really need the current rules fixed before new ones are made
