  1. could you teach him that when his paw is fur side down the way you want it he lifts his other leg to put his weight on the leg that requires strengthening?
  2. so he has 2 pugs that might not be the best example of the breed and the book is about those dogs. hmm, lets hope he hasn't tarred good examples of the breed with the same brush.
  3. Are you talking about Terriers or Collies? I'm not aware of any Terriers in Aus who are fortunate enough to hunt with a hound pack. oh i am an immigrant from scotland so i have seen borders working there eta in the late 60's early 70's Ooooh jealous much????? I believe even there they aren't allowed to work much. Stupid animal rights freaks. I did enquire about running with a registered hound pack here but they wouldn't accept terriers grr. Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude or make it sound like I thought you were stupid, just needed to clarify as I get 'collie' all the damn time LOL. not rude at all it is unusual to have seen them work. i don't think they are allowed to work any more. it was a long time ago i saw them. i have looked at having a border at some stage they are great dogs.
  4. Are you talking about Terriers or Collies? I'm not aware of any Terriers in Aus who are fortunate enough to hunt with a hound pack. oh i am an immigrant from scotland so i have seen borders working there eta in the late 60's early 70's
  5. hve you tried anti-histamines? i would get allergy testing done
  6. Does nurture (training and upbringing) have anything to do with this 'presence'? Will a beautifully bred, stunningly conformed purebred dog that has been neglected in socialisation and training sense still have this presence? Surely presence must be the amalgam of a number of variables including the owner? This beautifully bred, stunningly conformed purebred dog under the care of High Lady Froolaloo will probably fare quite differently the hands of Mr. Chopper Boganhead or is this je ne sais quoi presence to which you refer arise purely out of the breeding? does it matter? i dont think so, imo what really matters is that well bred dogs are great for promoting pure bred dogs...nothing wrong with that and that's what this thread is about
  7. Be aware of the fact that when you come in and want to move them forward they resist be careful to assess what the peopel who have been doing what they do get out of it OTHER THAN helping the dogs and step carefully so you dont make them feel threatened. too true Steve
  8. It's not about beauty -v- ugly. It's about a dog that's well put together. Can we focus on that? A well bred dog. The dog in my example is obviously not well bred because anyone can see he was put together wrong. Seeing a dog put together right is something to be proud of. and i believe joe public sees that and looks closer.
  9. oh i know what it's like SP, people have said to me about jaxx that she "has a face only a mother could love" and i think she is gorgeous. i just laugh at them because they are a bit ignorant of the qualities of a boston and if they spend any time with her they soon change their minds because she is quite endearing. eta i do think borders are beautiful especially when they are going about their job, my oh my they are gorgrous
  10. i would love to see pet owners taking their pedigree dogs to an organised "meet the pure bred" day so the public can see that they aren't just show dogs, they make terrific pets. it would be great if this could happen in every state and territory on the same day as a PR exercise. what fun it would be
  11. Sure for sure. There is a staffy x pug in my local dog park. He turns heads every time he's there - the ugliest bloody thing you've ever seen in your life. His owner loves him and thinks he's beautiful and he gets great care so that's all that matters, but I've driven by with non doggy friends who have all said the same thing - shit that is ugly. They also point out other dogs and say - that's really beautiful! They wouldnt have a clue why one dog strikes them as shit ugly and another strikes them as really stunning. That's when it's our job to have a chat about well bred animals. A lot of people think Bulldogs are ugly, Chinese Cresteds, Greyhounds etc. Ive had people say to my face how ugly my Borders are and they are all well bred, move beautifully and are in show coat. Beauty vs ugly is subjective IMO. People used to tell me how amazing my Dobe x looked and wanted to know what breed she was, occasionally had ppl stop their cars to ask. Likewise our kelpie x whippet, some people weredrawn to her. I agree we need to get our well bred dogs out there but I wouldn't go as far as to say people cannot be as impressed by a mongrel as a pure bred. are they blind  borders are beautiful!!! on a serious note, i think that by luck and chance some cross breeds can look amazing and can move beautifully so its not just pure breds that can do this BUT in my experience it is a very rare thing for a cross bred to have amazing conformation. i think there is more chance to have a pure bred that has good conformation than it is a cross bred. for me, this has nothing to do with how much they are loved or how good a cross bred is as a pet, its about grace and beauty and conforming to type.
  12. totally agree with steve. the vision is what you want to be the strategy is where you want to go the business plan is how you are going to get there if you have all three it makes it easy to get people on the same page as the organisation rather than them running with their own agenda's eta they don't need to be big complex documents
  13. monah the mdba run courses for rescue here http://www.mdba.net.au/index.php?option=co...1&Itemid=28 maybe steve/mdba could help with some agenda items for the meeting?
  14. indeed, i have seen a few dogs that have taken my breath away and not just me either, people who aren't dog people had the same reaction...the dogs were magnificent eta the last one was an amstaff and i went over to ask what sort of dog it was i had never seen such a well put together amstaff before. i then researched them more thoroughly and it really was one of the best
  15. i disagree. the general public may not be able to articulate why a dog makes them stop and stare or make them gasp but i am pretty sure it is because they have seen a magnificent dog with great conformation that walks well
  16. Got that one courtesy of my thread about trampolines! memories ;)
  17. i think we should educate the public. i take jaxx for a walk to the cafe and we sit outside and have a coffee. she likes to sit on my lap and watch the world go by (norty dog) and i let her (norty owner) but she sure does attract attention. what has surprised me is the amount of people who ask me where i got my miniature boxer so that lets me start telling them about bostons people like the look of her and the size and that's when i can say that is the good thinking about buying a pure bred dog, you know what you are getting in regards to size, colour and temperament which can be really important sometimes when choosing a dog.
  18. you've missed the point as well sc this thread is about promoting our pure bred dogs, surely you get that we need to do this?
  19. i saw a jrt today, strutting alongside its owner, it looked so happy to be out with the wind in its hair it made me smile
  20. i didnt bag breeders, i pointed out the arrogance in the original post. we're meant to be teaching tolerance and acceptance within the human race to our children but how are we meant to do that when we can't even do it with our dogs? it's intimidating to come onto a forum and be confronted by people boasting about their dogs because they came from the top breeder in the country, it's like going to a dinner party and having someone boast about their child going to the most expensive private school and going on about how much better it is than the one you could afford to send your child to. anyway, i didnt come here to argue, i came to talk about dogs, in all shapes and sizes. If you are intimidated by this forum where people can PROUDLY boast about their dogs coming from a top breeder, wait until you really get into DOL and read & participate in some other threads you will be heading for the exit door very quickly This a purebred forum to discuss and promote purebred dogs, not the human race and teaching tolerance and acceptance . Good luck in finding a forum that does that, I am sure it would be most entertaining and rather explosive Anyway now to get this thread back on topic i'm a little confused, you don't believe in teaching tolerance and acceptance to future generations? you'd prefer segregation from those whom are different than you? i understand that there are health benefits of getting your dog from a breeder, but i still think that the way you guys are going about promoting it are offensive to those who haven't. this is off topic from the original topic but that's the nature of the internet. But not the nature of this forum...please read the forum rules
  21. you just dont get it do you. this thread is here for a reason and you obviously havent read all the threads because you are too new to understand the reason behind this thread. how about you familiarise yourself with some of the recent topics before you start getting rude and arrogant and going off topic?
  22. dobe puppies are the cutest as well. it is great that the kids got up close and personal with Acheron
  23. Don't forget that this forum has a M & M - Mutts and Mongrels of undetermined heritage - thread. Also I haven't found any other forums in Australia that are as active as this one or hves as many knowledgeable members so once again surely the way to go is positive education not elitism and snobbishness. again, stay on topic, this thread was for PURE BRED dog owners, no one is talking about M&M's in this thread, there are other threads for them. i get really annoyed when threads are dragged off topic because someone is arrogant enough to derail them with their pet peeves.
  24. Why don't you take a good look at the title of this thread and then what this forum is all about - PUREBRED DOGS - also read the forum rules as well here Forum Rules. You may then understand why this forum will ALWAYS promote PUREBREEDS as recognised by the ANKC. Many dolers have crossbreeds which are well loved and cared for with many being terrific dogs, and they are allowed to join this forum and participate in the discussions, but the fact remains this is a PUREBREED forum for promotion of PUREBREEDS with rules governing what is allowed to be promoted and discussed, pure and simple. x2 kyliestar, please make sure you are on the right forum for your interests if this were a forum for humans it would be seen as racist my apologies, i didn't think dog lovers would feel the need to segregate themselves from the "unpure" crossbreed owners. i do own a pure breed, thanks for bringing to my attention the difference between my dog and those dirty mudbloods, i wont be making THAT mistake in the future. oh for goodness sake no need to get hysterical, stay on topic and read the forum rules and you should manage to stay on side with everyone
  25. i agree with labsrule, we are proud of our dogs and dont need anyone coming in here with a negative attitude towards them. if kyliestar wants to bag breeders, she can do it in another thread or on another forum
