Old School Type Training
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to rastus_froggy's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
i teach my pups to drop and sit before they go to obedience...using food so by the time they are 4 months old they are doing it really well. i only use food so they get the hang of what the command means then when they are reliably doing it i don't use food any more. i do the same with stay but that i make a game with no food. by 4-6 months old they know the basic commands and training is just getting them more reliable with more distractions. food has its place but i can say i went to a purely food training course and this didn't work for my dog (no slip collars allowed) and i have been to traditional training. i would never let anyone take my dogs lead ever, because i have seen the same thing done to other dogs i don't think there is much of a chance of change if she is the president but if the club is affiliated with the state kennel club then could you complain there? -
Here We Go Mandatory Desexing For All Pet Puppies.

we might i think it important to crunch the numbers which btw i have no idea how it will turn out, because that is real data that we can discuss. -
Illegal For Dogs To Wee On Nature Strip Now?
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to ChocoLabs Dad's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yeah, and I know that when I wanted to plant mine out with trees, I had to make sure that I only planted trees that were on the Council's "acceptable" list, and there were restrictions on where I could plant (eg distance from one to another). But they would have supplied the trees if I was happy enough for them to choose what tree and their choice depended upon which trees they had in stock at the time. yep that's what they told me, can only plant what they say and can't cut down any tree on the nature strip -
as we can't see the puppy i am going for the "better safe than sorry" approach and i think a vet's opinion should be sought

my friend in melbourne had an apartment which was huge....... 4 bedrooms high ceilings and opposite a park....can't see why a dog wouldn't be happy in a place like that. isn't it about an enriching environment any more?

Illegal For Dogs To Wee On Nature Strip Now?
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to ChocoLabs Dad's topic in General Dog Discussion
In suburban Victoria at least, it is the property owner's responsibility to maintain the nature strip. actually Erny, thinking about it, you might be right ..... i might have a chat to them about that...although there isn't much they could do if the property owner did nothing.. eta mine was full of weeds and i called the council because I wanted to kill the weeds and plant grass. they sent out the guys and they sprayed the weeds and gave me a big bag of lawn seed....thats how i came to be chatting about it. -

Illegal For Dogs To Wee On Nature Strip Now?
Jaxx'sBuddy replied to ChocoLabs Dad's topic in General Dog Discussion
i was just talking to a council guy about this the other day. he was having a bit of a complain because home owners think they own the nature strip and they don't. the nature strip is council property, that's why they mow it (if you are lucky) and water the tree on it (if you are doubly lucky) and also, you can't plant what you want on it without council permission....because its their land it was a very informative chat -

the nature strip belongs to the council so call them and ask them but i think your neighbour is telling porky's -
The ANKC has no say at all in who in the general population can own an entire dog or bitch. They don't have any legal authority, they just run a registry. You may be thinking of some of the proposed legislation around, but that legislation doesn't give ANKC reg breeders any special standing, it's a local govt breeders permit that would be needed. It's intent is to cut down on byb, I guess how it was enforced would be the key. yes i think it is the proposed ACT legislation that talks about this

totally agree mita, great post.... yap i feel for your loss and the struggle you are having now grieving is very hard to manage and sometimes we all need a bit of help......i am sure as mita is that you beloved dog would want you to look after yourself. do you have any animals and humans that could help you through this tough time? there is a lot written about the grieving process and the one i like the best is the Elisabeth Kubler Ross approach. I have a link here to her website that explains the grief process http://www.ekrfoundation.org/ if you are interested

Sorry, what was the point? I agree with you that it is education that will solve the problem, but it is not education of the BYB or whoever else - like the OP is suggesting. Like you said it is education of the 'smokers' that is necessary. I was combining what you said with the overall thread. Sorry if I've offended. oh no offence taken at all AG i think we need to do 3 things just like the smoking educate the public on the issues make the producers (BYB's) of the "product" pay (as in the USA where tobacco companies were sued by class action) legislate and police so in my world BYB's would have to do everything registered breeders are responsible for and this would be policed. not so attractive for them to breed. we are on the same page! yes we are

i would really like to see a test case happen. i am sure there would be a good example somewhere within the dog world

remember we were just about on track :p or at least on topic

is it because if they could do that how could a citizen appeal to a higher court outside their state?
-
because of this: The Land Court consistently upholds the decision made in Marshall v Graham (1907), a King's Bench decision, that land used exclusively for the purpose of a dwelling may be used for other purposes, and has ruled on a number of occasions tht the keeping of pets is lawful use of the land, and as such, no council approval is required, nor is approval required for a hobby (ie, keeping and breeding dogs). i don't think it matters because it is the use of the land since a dwelling was put on it for habitation that is at the centre of the matter. eta so because it is land for a dwelling the above takes place....if it was land for a shop or an office it wouldn't be correct

so sorry for your loss dogmad RIP Pepper

my goodness what a great age to be..and very handsome as well congratulations to you both

Yes, but in this analogy the manufacturers were not the target of education, it was the smokers who were targetted. Running around (figuratively) belting people up for cross breeding is only going to give you a headache because it is not in their interests to hear what you are saying. It is the end user (dog owner) who needs to come to their own conclusion and start to change their behaviour. Cigarette companies are still eeking out a (massive, decreasingly profitable) living and seeking to justify their means and ends - people simply breeding mary lou with peter the pound dog are never going to get it because they are making money from it. Changing the world one pet owner at a time is what it comes back to and insulting people's intelligence and abusing people who don't see the world the way we do is going to do more harm than good. The only way to effect wholesale change is to find someone with the time, means and energy to lobby governments and start the wheels of change moving. The problem with that approach is whether it is a big enough issue within society for governments to care. Last I checked the streets were not being over run by out of control cross breeds so it is unlikely to get on the radar any time soon. Sorry, just in a realistic mood this morning - unless someone with far more cash and time than I have decides to champion the cause then everything else is just a myopic dream. you missed the point of my post

This is why we need to be commenting on Facebook, in letters to the papers, ANYWHERE we can get the message out there that purebred dogs are great pets. If we could also address the ridiculous idea that SOME people on this forum have that breeders who sell their puppies mainly for pets are no better than BYBs it would also go a long way towards eradicating the idea that registered breeders are "elitist" :D
