  1. txs Jed. i do wonder though why other breeders are testing? i would imagine they test because they want to know? i do not believe anyone can blanket say dogs shouldn't be tested because other breeders are saying the opposite of what you are saying which is that the dogs should be tested. wouldn't it be better to be open minded about the tests?
  2. Jed i am not giving bad advice and having a go at me rather than answering the questions is poor form IMO
  3. we don't know how many breeders are testing for it outside of dol so that's why i think the cav clubs would be best placed to direct to breeders who are testing.
  4. not having a go at you Jed simply asking questions. i do not understand why there is such a negative view on MRI tests on DOL when other cav breeders both here and overseas are testing. i also think it is responsible to give accurate advice when people ask it and i for one would not be comfortable proclaiming that there is a very small incidence of SM in australia. how do we know that is the dogs aren't tested?
  5. the concern about this is that it takes a health choice away from the owner. i do not like de-sexing large dogs at that age If it gets in then I would suggest new owners to leave the pups registered with the breeder until they are mature enough to be desexed - but that would be a big risk on some pet owners too. It's not unheard of that some breeders want pups back if they turn out better than they expected or kept the wrong pup themselves. Would make some people be more particular where they place puppies and owners where they purchase them. true, but imo it just complicates things more than necessary and to be honest i am getting over being so regulated as a dog owner

  7. here are some links Cavalier club of SA which might know of breeders who MRI test http://www.cavaliersa.com/ i found NSW breeders (on the dol breeder pages) who MRI so for a SA breeder the SA cav club would be your best bet
  8. why not? overseas breeders are MRI'ing their dogs and declaring whether they are SM free or no. eta some aus breeders are MRI'ing as well JB I certainly am not against MRI in fact this topic is new to me I have not had a puppy in 15 years and have never purchased diirectly from a breeder either as I want to this time. until I started reading up on breeders this week I would not have even known about the heart and eye tests etc and seriously I wonder now how many prospective puppy owners do either they pop into pet shops and see Ads without any thought to this and I am sure many are duped by backyarders. I would be happy for you to find me a Cavalier breeder in SA who does the MRI. I also think this would be a excellent open topic in the forum for all breeders to voice their opinion too. Thankyou for your input Michelle i will try to find SA breeders who do this i just think that the more we know the better it is for our dogs
  9. Smelling salts Sheridan? Actually I'm sure we've agreed before. I think it was in one thread in about August 2006. ;) you both crack me up
  10. mita do you also subscribe to no MRI testing for SM even though other overseas and aus breeders are undertaking this test?
  11. why not? overseas breeders are MRI'ing their dogs and declaring whether they are SM free or no. eta some aus breeders are MRI'ing as well
  12. as i said before Jed, Boston's suffer from this as well do you have stats to prove the incidence of SM in Australia? seems not such good advice to be giving a puppy buyer. i thought that's why we steer them away from puppy farms....because the puppy farmers don't test but registered breeders do???? eta here is some info on SM testing http://www.veterinary-neurologist.co.uk/part5.htm
  13. i would always buy a puppy from a breeder who tests for all known diseases
  14. but given there appears to have been problems last time wouldn't it be an idea to look into reducing the risk of further problems?
  15. i think a bunch of dogs and food and balls don't necessarily mix. that's not picking on anyone but just looking at what can set dogs off. surely all we are trying to do is stop issues before they happen? I would have thought that we could resolve this in a way so that the meet would continue and the dogs interests be looked after. would it hurt to try this at the next meet?
  16. erny, how would the tea be made...i bought some calendula tea but don't know the quantities to use. TY
  17. i think there have been a few good points raise here. would it be reasonable to take time to define how the meets would work best? it seems to me that to mitigate the risks maybe no toys and no food should be brought to the meets, would that be manageable and is this what people want? would it be beneficial for people to agree that if a dog or dogs are misbehaving (like mine can do) that they are kept on a leash if they misbehave until they are able to behave appropriately? what do you all think?
  18. i have a skungy bucket of water outside my back door and its the dogs favourite watering hole. doesn't do her any harm
  19. i don't see the issue with reducing risks by not having balls or squeaky toys at the meets. seems sensible to me
  20. Ahhh, ok I also see that any expensive regulations would do this. I was hoping if it is just a matter of applying for a breeder's number, that it should be a fairly inexpensive exercise. Annoying, yes, expensive, no. And those registered with the council simply provide their dog/s rego number & voila!! Here's your breeder's number. And then go from there when Breeder A's number comes up in conjunction with 500 pups/year. Yes, probably too simple We have one member who owns two dogs - one of which is the only champion bitch of her kind in the country - the other is old. The breeders property doesnt pass for her to be able to breed so she has to wait until she moves to different premises to do that - in around 2 years. The owner is happy to do this. However, you cant own an entire dog without a breeders permit. now that is a true catch 22 :D
  21. given you say it is costly to become a breeder and that is why you aren't registered, have you paid to have your dogs checked for genetic disease and have you hip and elbow scored your dogs prior to breeding them? eta what makes you different from a backyard breeder?
  22. i might be bringing in another 2 ring-in's, daughter and her bf.
  23. maybe it's just the mucus from her anal glands?
