  1. I hope it works out, it would be great to see more of the smaller terriers in the agility ring.
  2. Last year I was attending the training club where Gina O is an advisor and classes are still one hour long with food the only motivator used
  3. My dog does not have gastro, I never said she had! (If I suspected gastro I would have taken her straight into to see the vet) I have not changed her diet recently, she has been fed on dry in the morning and raw in the evening for over 8 months. Her poo is simply softer than usual - now improving. If she has problems again when I reintroduce raw food, I will simply cook it.
  4. I added some cooked pumpkin to the chicken and rice last night and the 'result' this morning is very promising.
  5. I have no problem with everyone having their own opinion, but I object to being told that dry food is the only option.
  6. It was the vet nurse I was speaking to, passing on the vet's advice, she also commented about not knowing where I got my info from. Couldn't be bothered to tell her I'd spent many hours reading about it although I was tempted to tell her she needed to do a bit of research!
  7. I'm a bit baffled as to what's causing it as she's had very few problems until now and she tolerated the change to Artemis very well. I have been giving her a spoonful of natural yoghurt in the mornings, I'd better try leaving that out just in case she's lactose intolerant or something!
  8. I've tried her with small mounts of sardines and salmon before but that has given her the runs (I think it's the oil).
  9. No, I had to eliminate the meat completely and just feed her dry food. We had this argument for 12 years with our last dog, although we cooked his meat with rice and veggies. I have no problem with feeding the chicken and rice to settle her tum, it was just the blanket statement that dogs should only be fed dry food
  10. I just phoned my vet's surgery for advice as my 11 month old puppy has had runnier poos than normal for a few days. They improved with chicken and rice for a couple of days but have gone runny again with her normal diet (Artemis dry in the morning and raw meat and veggies at night). The vet nurse took some info and went and spoke to the vet. I was advised to give her chicken and rice for 4 or 5 days then put her back on the dry food only as dogs do not need raw meat When I pointed out that some people would dispute that, she got quite shirty and told me that i had asked for professional advice and this was it. So now I have steam coming out of my ears. I shall just have to make sure that I see the other vet if I have to go in as I'm sure i mentioned I fed raw to him and he didn't comment. Just needed to vent to people who would understand, I thought even vets had more open minds about feeding these days but i was wrong!!
  11. That's why I'm doing the Delta training - small class of 8 dogs (same dogs, same trainer.) I was attending a very large club where we were with different dogs and a different trainer nearly every week. I've met a few dogs around her age over the last few days and I don't think she's any worse than they were.
  12. Any other opinions before I declare this myth busted??
  13. Is that meant to be reassuring?? Our previous Lakeland definitely calmed down with age (by about 7!!) but still kept his cheeky, fun loving character.
  14. Hi Sass, We have been attending a training club since 9 weeks old and have had a couple of one on one sessions for advice about specific behaviours so we're not slacking off on training. We are also starting Delta training next week as the classes are small. I think her behaviour is due to breed and age, it was someone else who suggested she was highly strung and a high protein diet would make it worse!!
  15. It's been suggested to me that I should reduce the level of protein in our pups diet to less than 22% to assist with her excitable behaviour. She is a 10 month old terrier and is pretty relaxed around the house but does get very excited when meeting other dogs and people, I am expecting she will grow out of this with obedience training and increased maturity. With the move towards to BARF feeding I'm wondering if this is an old wife's tale or if it does have a scientific basis? I would really like some other opinions before I start changing her diet. She is currently fed Artemis small breed puppy (protein content 28%) in the mornings, for dinner she has either commercial BARF patties or raw human grade mince (usually beef) and blended vegtables. She also has chicken necks (or other bones) about 4 times a week. Her weight is stable and her coat is in good condition.
  16. Wouldn't this increase the risk of separation anxiety if the dog is so focused on the owner?
  17. Thanks for all the great suggestions. I have a found a clicker pen and tried a few clicks and tossed treats this morning. She was still cautious but at least didn't run away quivering like she did yesterday. I will try this for a few days and see if we make any progress. Hopefully she'll get over her teenage angst and not have to join Benson under the bed.
  18. I do use 'yes' (when I remember). I'm a real novice at training and thought a clicker would be a good tool for us both.
  19. We have a 10 month old terrier that we have always wanted to try clicker training with. Unfortunately she is scared by the noise of the clicker! We first tried when she was a few months old and have tried a few times since, including today. She runs away before I am able to give her a treat and can't be lured back. She isn't a timid dog so I'm really surprised by her reaction. I'm not sure whether to perservere with it? It is quite a loud click so was thinking about trying an i-clicker although I don't know whether they sound very different. Has anybody else had this problem and any suggestions how to solve it?
  20. Hi Drumbeat, I am feeding my pup on Artemis small breed puppy too. His poo is ok but smells pretty bad. Do you have the same problem? No, can't say I've noticed any difference
  21. I changed my 10 month old to Artemis small breed puppy from Orijen (slowly) and had no problems with runny poos. It probably only constitutes about one third of her diet, the rest is raw. Sample packs are readily available from the supplier which is great.
  22. I read something about that on the CAWA site, can you explain what it involves please?
