Can You Help Destiny?
Michelleva replied to Michelleva's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I will admit, I'm getting a bit impatient now.. Destiny's crate is all set up and awaiting her arrival.. I'm hopeful that they will release her to me later in the week. I need lots of good vibes that it all goes as we hope. This has been a long ordeal and I'm ready for it to be all over. Can't wait to get my special bubba home. This is the sign I put on her crate today.. I'm a tad crazy, but thats ok. -

I've spoken to the head vet this afternoon and little Destiny is doing really well. She's using one leg better than the other at this stage, but she has a fair bit of muscle wastage there, so in time that will improve. She's also using her litter tray with no problems, which is a great sign. She's being fostered by one of the vet nurses and she will stay there for another week, then I'll be able to adopt her. You know what really struck me about the conversation was the care they show for her, he called her by her name, she's no longer a number and that just warms my heart. She may end up with a limp, she may not, either way I don't care. She's alive, she's well and she's loved, what more could we ask for. -
Cat Rescue Melbourne?
Michelleva replied to Snout Girl's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Hey how old do you think the kittens are? Are they tame, do you think they can be handled. I may have someone who can take them in, they would have their vet work done and rehomed. -

Where in Melbourne are the kittens located? -

Here's a pic of her ouchie bits.. she's really good though, she was walking around a bit and could sit. So there is movement, which is what she needs to do to build those muscles back up. I'm told she's a tortie smoke, her coat is so pretty. When you part the hair its white underneath. -

Oh and she's going into foster care with one of the nurses for a couple of weeks, and then the vet is happy for me to take her home if all is good with her. She will likely require more crate rest but the vet is a lovely guy and knows I am prepared to do that... And she's only estimated to be 8 or 9 months old.. she was definitely smaller than I remembered. But that morning was all a bit of a blur to be honest.. I'm definitely a happy camper. -

I was lucky enough to have a happy reunion with our little survivor today and oh my goodness I'm in love. She is the sweetest little cat you could ever hope to meet. She gave me headbutts, purrs, kneading the works. Here's a couple of pics from my visit. -

It was funny today when I spoke to the vet, he referred to her as a kitten.. I knew she was young but I never thought she was kitten, so I wonder how old they think she is. I will keep you all posted on our little legend.. -

I'm happy to report that little Destiny's surgery was a success and she's already standing. How amazing is that considering she just had surgery on Friday morning.. -

I've heard nothing.. I called the shelter twice yesterday and they couldn't tell me anything. I will try again today. I think if something went wrong I would know that. -

Thank you Brenda.. I know what got me over the line "pester power". I was on their case everyday, I don't think they dared cross me.. LOL If you knew me in real life, I'm a meek, mild-mannered little thing. But I can be mighty pushy when I want to be. I will let you know how I go with the fund-raising Brenda. You may be able to keep your money for your own rescues. I'll let you know in the next few days. -

OMG, OMG, OMG.. I'm just about speechless. The shelter has called and she's getting her surgery ASAP. This was an almighty task, I took on the system to help a defenceless furry and I won!!! Don't worry I didn't do it on my own, I've had a tonne of support, most of it emotional as thats what I needed. But my unwillingness to give up got us over the line. I can't wait to meet the gorgeous girl again. I just hope she remembers me. -

I know to say I'm gosmacked is a huge understatement. Its been a roller coaster ride thats for sure. Thank you so much. -
Here is her story. Early on Friday 24th August I was walking my dog when I saw a little cat hunched up on the nature strip. She didn’t look well at all. So I put my dog on a short lead and slowly approached her, fully expecting her to run, she didn’t. But she did start making this horrendous howling noise, she was so loud and clearly in pain. A man arrived home and got out of his car, I asked him if he knew the cat which he didn’t. I asked him to hold my dog so I could check her more closely as I thought she’d been hurt. She had no blood or cuts anywhere but when I lifted her tummy up she couldn’t stand at all. It was 7.15am in the morning and I chose to knock on the doors just incase she was trying to get home. N o one answered. I didn’t know what to do, as I’d never been in this situation. I thought I’d see if she would let me pick her up, which surprisingly she did. But she was in so much pain, she cried so loudly it just about broke my heart. But I carried her for the 25 min trip home, ever so carefully to not hurt her any further. She was scared and in pain but she trusted me. How could I not try to help her? I felt honoured that she trusted me so much. I was 5 mins from home when it all became too much for the little girl. She tried to scratch me, simply out of fear and pain. She was also making a lot of noise, at that point a wonderful little boy who lives near me came out to offer assistance. He immediately took her off me, and that calmed her down again. I then left her with the neighbours while I went home for a carrier. I put the carrier in front of her and she moved her front legs and dragged her hind legs into the carrier, she didn’t cry anymore and she calmed down a lot. When I got her home I called a vet to see if they could help her. They said they would treat her and try and find her owners. I called them back a few hours later to be told that she most likely has a broken pelvis due to being hit by a car, and no microchip. They had already called the ranger. She was picked up by them that afternoon. I spoke to the pound later in the day and they informed me that she was going off to the shelter in North Melbourne. And thats where she's been treated for her pain and injuries, but this little cat has a broken pelvis and needs an expensive operation to survive and thrive. If we can get this surgery done, the little distressed cat I found will have an indoor home with me. Forever safe from roads. Please help me, to help the little cat I've named Destiny. Our paths crossed for a reason that day, and I know its just meant to be. What we need is pledges of donations. She is being cared for by The Lost Dogs Home and they want me to contribute to the costs of getting her better. If you can help, I will appreciate it greatly, as will little Miss Destiny. I've started a group on FB, which you are all welcome to join. Even if you can't afford to contribute, the more people that know about her the better off she will be. https://www.facebook...45861068798390/

Well this roller coaster ride I'm on just gets better and better. I managed to find a vet willing to take her in if I was prepared to get her out of the shelter, the idea was that they would give her a second opinion with the view of getting her in with a rescue organisation. That was no guarantee that she would make it, but at least she had a chance of making it. That was enough for me. So I called the pound and told them I was happy to take her in. At that stage they informed me that she's not desexed and they are not allowed to release her before she's had the op. Now I don't know any vet that would do this surgery on a cat with a broken pelvis.. the cat manager was going to speak to the vet and call me back tomorrow. I already know what the answer will be. Now what I don't understand is if they knew she wasn't desexed when she arrived at the pound, and they now know the full extent of her injuries and they won't fix her injuries, why is she still there.. why not let her go.. Poor little Desitny, I hope she's not suffering and stressed. I don't see any happy endings here, no matter how much I want to. -

Thank you, hugs from me. Its been an emotional day for me. How can you worry so much about an animal I\you knew for less than an hour? Its her trusting nature and her purr that will stay with me forever, whether she survives this or not. -

I've made contact with a rescue organisation to see if maybe they can help her and I can foster her for them. If that is a possibility I will take you up on your offers of donations, but they will go to the rescue.. I haven't given up on her yet.. but I certainly understand if they aren't in a position to help her. -

Thank you. She's still at the shelter, receiving pain relief. I have to call back tomorrow, it was a shock hearing the extent of her injuries. I feel its too big a task to take on, so I think the kindest thing we can do is set her free. I don't know how shelters work, but I couldn't get her until the 2nd September, so don't know if they can PTS before that date. -

For anyone whose followed the story of the little cat I found I've got an update, sadly its not a good one. I've finally spoken to the cat manager and the vet who is treating her. Her pelvis is fractured in 4 places and requires surgery at a specialist vet which will be well over $2000. I simply can't afford that. I'm heartbroken, I really thought if she just needed rest and time to recouperate I could help her, but this is way over my head. I'm saddened that her humans let her down so terribly, we tried to pick up the pieces but she's just too broken. Oh and I named her Destiny. I don't want her dying without a name. She was loved, even if it was only me. -

Well after all my door knocking efforts and flyers at this stage no owner is taking responsiblity for her. I have my name down on her at the pound. So once her time is up there, she can come here and I will help her get better. I can't keep her, so I'll be rehoming her. The pound is so hard to deal with though. They told me I need to speak to the cat manager and I've left message after message yesterday and she just doesn't call back. I've heard a lot of bad stories about this pound, so I'm nervous about her being there. Fingers crossed I know more today. To be honest I still can't quite believe that she's alive. I thought with her injuries the pound vet would have taken one look at her and put her to sleep. If she comes here, she's going to be called Destiny, I think its fitting. -

I've been out door knocking and letter box dropping for the last 2 and a bit hours but we have hope. We met a couple of people who've seen her before and a house we suspect she may live.. they weren't home but I left a note under the door mat, and now we cross our fingers and wait.. there are also signs everywhere on lamp posts, so hopefully someone will know her and alert her owner.
