Information About Parvo Outbreaks And Affected Areas
Odette replied to Odette's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
From about 2 weeks after vaccination. The titer will gradually diminish over years (unless of course the animal is exposed to the virus, and mounts a immune response). Have you ever had your titer tested? We had to have our Hep B titers tested here at work (i work with human blood on occasion), and was vaccinated years ago. If the titer was below a threshold, i would have required a booster. Same principle they are establishing for dog vaccination now Im guessing.... -

The thinking is that if the pup still has maternal antibodies, this fights the vaccine and they cancel each other out, leaving the pup with no immunity. The maternal antibodies will bind to and neutralise the parvo in the vaccine, not allowing for the puppies own immune system to mount a response and develop its own antibodies. -

Not sure why you would complain about the pup being vaccinated at 8 weeks, pups are meant to be done at 8-10 weeks, NOT 6 weeks. You cant avoid Parvo it is potentially everywhere, car tyres, flies, clothing etc etc etc.........Usually it will start at the local "pound/shelters" or sometimes boarding kennels , some kennels are also the local "pound" for eg......... If your dog has been vaccinated correctly & it has immunity there is not a problem, however the only way to know if your dog has immunity is to do a Titer test (blood test), just because a dog has injections, doesnt mean it worked! Usually they dont work as people vaccinate too young for a start. Then over vaccinate by giving it every year unneccessarily making their dog less immune & their immune system stressed & compromised. Not complaining about 8 week vax, we picked her up from the breeder at 8 weeks. I understand that maternal antibodies often neutralise the first vaccine anyway. I was under the impression she should have had a 12 week and 16 week vaccination, rather than 14 week and 18 week.. Its all good though, i think it was probably better that they messed up. On the vaccination card it said her second shots were due on Dec 12th. That would have made her almost 16 weeks at the second shot, and 20 weeks at her 3rd shot. A vet friend told us that a mistake had been made (she was 14 weeks old at the time) so we immediately booked her in for her second shots. I might get her titer tested when we take her in to get her microchipped. -
I live in an area which, according to our vet, hasn't seen parvo in over 6 or 7 years (the vast majority would vaccinate their pets). My mum on the other hand lives in an area where i don't think people would routinely vaccinate their dogs, but has some wonderful parkland and native bushland (in Melbourne's North). My pup has had her shots, at 8 weeks, 14 weeks and 18 weeks (there was an error on the vaccination card given to us by the breeder, so we ended up being 2 weeks late with her shots, i put in a complaint about it although it might not have been a bad thing in hindsight). After reading on here that fully vaccinated adult dogs succumb to parvo, is there any resource available that would allow you to quickly check if parvo has been present in an area recently other than calling veterinary clinics in the area? I know from the news that Moorabbin had an outbreak in August last year.... How do you check if an area has had a recent parvo outbreak? Thanks!!

I live in an apartment, right next to a main road, and she has been playing in the courtyards (i have one at back and at front, both secure) since we got her, there are always trams and cars going by, and people...she's fine with traffic and noise, the only thing Ive ever seen her jump at was a very loud motorbike going past, she seems a little jumpy with them. No problem at all with people or children, in fact, if anything, she loves children. She actually is GREAT off lead, stays right beside me, and her recall is excellent. Yesterday she came to the garage with me to get something, off lead, and stayed right at my side. I have her clicker and a handful of food on me at all times, in case she does get the idea to run off. On the lead though, she tugs. We're working on that problem at the moment, she picks things up quickly, and ive booked in for beyond basics obedience classes next month. I really dont have any major complaints with her at all, nothing that i dont think can be easily sorted with time and patience, she is after all still a puppy.

Odette is 5 months old now, but here are a couple of pics of her at 8 weeks: Name: Odette Sex: Female Age: 5 months (8 weeks in those pics) Colour: Red Breed: Pug x Cavalier King Charles Hobbies: Sleeping and playing, chasing the cat Loves: Running through long grass, playing with her toys Hates: Having to go to the toilet outside if its wet!!
-
I agree, Im planning on continuing her training as long as i can i guess! I think it builds a solid relationship between owner and dog. Ive called the RSPCA a couple of times to see when they are resuming classes (we did puppy pre-school there, and the trainer was excellent), and was told they'd call me back.. Still waiting! I'll call them now, thanks for the reminder!

She has more of a Cavalier body shape than a pug, if that helps... I read that Cavalier's can suffer from knee problems though, so Im keeping an eye on that....
-
What age/breed pup are you talking about Odette. What surfaces would it walk on. She is a pug x cavalier, 5 months old... She is small, but has long legs, and pulls like crazy on the lead). She would walk on the sidewalk and on grass in the park. The walk to the video store is about 10 mins each way with a brisk pace, but we usually take our time, and let her run off the lead in the park (she stays close, and her recall is EXCELLENT, thanks puppy pre-school!). I dont want to do any damage to her legs though....
-
Whatis considered a long walk compared to a short walk? 30 mins, 1 hour, 2 hours?
-
Ahh, i see... Odette DEFINATELY dictates the pace I was using an extendable lead to being with, but she tugs so hard on it, ive gotten her a much stronger lead, and she is only a little dog!!! When she was very little, if we did see her slowing, we would carry her the rest of the way, never made her walk if she didnt want to.... Odette, teach your pup to walk on a loose lead or you'll be regretting it for the next 15 years.. Extendable leads teach dogs to pull - that's the only way they extend. That's why I usually don't recommend them to people. Yeah we've got a standard lead now, i just bought it on the weekend.. My partner is really keen to teach her to heel (i personally dont mind if she pulls ) so we'll be trying to teach her that soon. We used the extendable to teach her recall mostly, and thats worked a treat.

Puppy Ate Kangaroo/possum Droppings (and Possibly Rabbit?)
Odette replied to Odette's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
She tries to raid the cats litter box regularly, so we keep it elevated on a table now .. I havent seen her eat her own poo ever, or other dogs... I use Advocate for my puppy and cat, she had her last dose on Dec 31st, so still has a couple of weeks to go on it.. I don't use any additional worming products?? -
Puppy pre-school is the BEST. I cant recommend it highly enough. We were'nt allowed to take our puppy unless she had a vaccination certificate. We took our puppy to the RSPCA puppy pre-school in Burwood, it was great!

We started taking Odette for walks pretty much straight away, for the first month or so, and then were told to keep her at home until she had finished all of her vaccinations. Luckily, the vet tood us they hadn't seen parvo in our area for over 7 years, so it was all ok. She had been going to puppy pre-school, and playing with friendly family dogs. She had her last shots at the end of december, so mid january we started walking her again, she was about 4 1/2 months old. I take her everywhere with me now, she LOVES it. Why wouldnt you walk a puppy that has been fully vaccinated? I don't understand the reasoning...?????
-
I took my 5 month old puppy out for a walk in the local woodlands park, its like a small piece of Australian bushland, protected but you can take dogs in on leads. I had hr on a long lead, and was walking through the scrub, and had stopped to look at something, and when i turned around noticed the puppy was eating droppings. She did this a few times during the walk, with the droppings being of varying size... There are roos in the park, and possums, and i saw a rabbit. She has had all of her vax (3 shots, but i hear the first shot is usually useless against parvo anyway, the vet assures me she would be protected now). Can she get sick from this? Should i be worried?

I feed my puppy Eagle Pack Holistic chicken and rice formula, she loves it and looks beautiful.

It has taken us AGES to toilet train Odette, and she still wees inside on the odd occasion (She is a indoor dog, almost 5 months old, still a puppy so hey, it happens). I tried everything... Paper training, praising, i was adamant to not try what i believe is a pretty barbaric practice of putting their face or nose in it... After going insane one night, after she had us cleaning up after her for hours, my partner had enough and put her face very close to it (im still against the nose IN it), said NO very firmly, then put her in the bathroom for 5-10 minutes. I hate to say it, but its worked... She scratches on the door to go outside (even waking me up one night at 3 am, whimpering to go out to poop!), and we give her food (we use her food to train her) when she does go outside... Wee/poop inside = nose near it and locked in bathroom for 5 mins..... Wee/poop outside = praise and food. She learnt pretty quickly.

I give Odette pigs ears when i want a moments peace too hahaha She loves them, but she's also small, and a ear lasts days and days....

What Are Dolers Feeding Their Dogs
Odette replied to Baileys mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
On another note, my mum's dog has eaten supermarket cat food (would never touch dog food) and table scraps its entire life. The dog has NEVER been ill, ever, and just went past her 16th birthday.... Now all she'll eat is Mortadella and other salamis from the supermarket, no kidding, or leftovers, will not touch anything else. I sent some Nutripet home with mum the other day, thinking she would probably eat that, and its healthier than the salami... At 16, i figure the dog can eat whatever she likes, she's done the time! -

I feed Odette EP Holistic Chicken and Rice formula.. She is 4 1/2 months old, I was feeding her Hills SD Puppy until i read on this forum actually that its not much better than junk food... There is a great little pet place around the corner which stocks EP, but only the holistic formula.. Puppy loves it (although she isnt a particularly fussy eater to begin with), and looks the absolute picture of health. I also give her tidbits, like pigs ears, raw bones... She loves Nutripet on the odd occasion too, that stuff smells divine! Like rich caramel.... To be honest, if I offered her a bowl of the EP Holistic, or raw mince, or even the Nutripet, and offered her a bowl of my cat's poop, i still think she'd go for the poop first. -
AT puppy pre-school, we were told to use her usual food as a training aid, so i feed my puppy throughout the day, rather than at set times.. I measure out her daily ration in the morning, then give her a little while Im training her... She's 4 1/2 months old, and sits on command, drops, is learning to crawl, is pretty much toilet trained (she's been difficult!).. and she comes when called, which has been VERY useful.. Im hoping to get her into a tricks class in the next couple of months.. SO i guess that's another option, if you have the time?
