  2. Try a Groomers pin brush. They are from the UK. I love them on the borders, nice long pins and mine has lasted a while with some knotty work being done with it as well. I think the website for them is www.groomersproducts.com.au
  3. Some more info from the makers of Metacam Adverse Effects: The safety profile of meloxicam has been evaluated in well controlled target animal safety studies in the dog. Dogs treated with placebo, 1X, 3X and 5X label dosages were closely monitored over a 180 day (26 weeks) period. The study determined that there were no drug related adverse effects on clinical observations, normal body weight gain, food consumption, physical and ophthalmic examinations, clotting times, mucosal bleeding times or on a panel of clinical pathology parameters monitored throughout the study. Postmarketing reports of suspected adverse drug reactions (SADRs) following field use of MetacamĀ® (meloxicam) have been monitored worldwide since 1995. Based on case reports received under a voluntary reporting system by veterinarians or pet owners/caregivers, the most important affected body system was the gastrointestinal tract followed in decreasing order by central nervous system/behavioural signs, renal and dermatological system. Case reports often did not provide sufficient information to establish cause of the signs observed. In most cases, adverse effects were transient and disappeared after termination of treatment. In rare cases however, death has been associated with some of these adverse reactions. The following suspected adverse effects have been reported: Gastrointestinal: Vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, melena, hematemesis, ulceration. Central Nervous System/Behavioural: Ataxia, personality change, seizures, sleepiness, hyperactivity, depression, trembling. Renal: Elevated creatinine and BUN, acute renal failure. Dermatologic: Pruritus, eczema, focal alopecia, moist dermatitis (hot spots). Hypersensitivity: Urticaria, allergic dermatitis. Hematologic: Immune mediated hemolytic anemia, immune mediated thrombocytopenia. Hepatic: Elevated liver enzymes, jaundice. My girl who is on it gets to 17.5 on the plunger and she weighs over 18 kg. So its not an awful lot to give. Hope things start looking up tonight for you and your girl. I was a bit dubious about giving it at all as but in terms of pain management I did agree to use it. My girl has a severely broken foot that has a plate and 10 pins in and is currently in a cast with total crate rest. A 20 month old Border Collie on total crate rest is an absolute nightmare.
  4. Cowanbree I just did a google on Metacam and Seizures and come up with this In the event of overdose Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room. Symptoms of overdose may include vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the stool, increased thirst and urination, incoordination, seizures or behavioral changes. What dose did you give your old girl??
  5. Hi cownanbree I have a bottle here with the insert sheet. Side effects Typical adverse reactions of NSAIDS may occur (particularly within the first 5- 14 days of treatment) These may include loss of appetite, diarrohea, faecal occult blood and apathy. Gastro Intestinal side effects are in most cases transient and disappear following termination of treatment but in rare cases may be serious. If gastro intestinal side effects are persistent or of severity treatment should be discontinued. Contraindications The use of the product is contra indicated in animals suffering from cardiac, hepatic or clinical renal disease. This is also the case where there is the possibilities of gastro intestinal ulceration or bleeding or where there is evidence of a haemorrhagic disorder or individual hypersensitivity to the product. Hope that helps you!! My young girl who is on Metacam goes stupid after a while. She obviously feels a whole lot better without the pain. Wants to jump and run around. Mind you she also does a bit of it when she gets taken out for her walks 4 times a day but the last walk of the night is the worst as she is full of the joys of spring. Tra la!!!
  6. Have never ever had an issue with dogs being fed only raw food and no vegetable matter. My dogs thrive on raw only so I will stick to it.
  7. Thanks Ness Yes it is a pretty impressive sized litter. Its not the biggest border collie litter by any stretch of the imagination. But it sure is impressive when you realise its from one solitary Ai late on a sunday night from an 11 year old dog on a bitch they werent sure if she was ready or not. I was sure she was ready.... but Bailey wouldnt mate her. Oh well it seems i am a glutton for punishment at the moment. Thanks for the offer of the puppy food but how about offering it to one of the reputable rescue people around you. I am sure that they can make good use of it.
  8. How about the bitch who is feeding her litter of 11 puppies at the moment. 4 cups of rehydratable and we are only on day 4 1/2 - 1 kg minced chicken frames per day 1 litre of milk a slab of lamb flaps and any cheese and other bits other half can get into her. Forgot have already gone through 500 grams of Divetelac in order to supplement feed them so would expect that in the long run will go through about 5 - 6 kgs of the stuff as well Blows the budget big time!! And the older they get the more she will eat in order to continue nursing them. Oh and the cardigan corgi can polish off 1 1/2 chicken carcasses and she is as skinny as. You can feel every rib on her. She never stops for long just enough to recharge her batteries then its back to play again. Then i have to feed the little beggars - that will blow the budget out even more
  9. Tis OK ness no offence taken. Growing boy puppies like there food. The girls do too!! Adult males like food when they cant smell interesting girls. And bitches feeding puppies blow all figures out of the roof. Mind you my papillon (all 2.6kg of her) can put away 5 chicken necks in one sitting and i am always being told off that she is to skinny.
  10. Ness My males on average weigh in excess of 20 kgs. My lightest BC bitch weighs just over 14 kg and on the average most of my girls weigh 18 kg. The Aussies on the whole weigh slightly more than the Borders. Also remember males tend to stress when bitches are in season so need more as they dont eat a lot on the whole at those times. Mine may not be doing agility and obedience but they run themselves silly playing all day with each other.
  11. I will not argue with you Red Mal but no where in either of Lonsdales books does he mention vegetable protein at all is needed for dogs. Check out rawfeeding and rawchat on yahoo groups. Both of these groups are modeled on Lonsdale and they do not tolerate vegetable matter of any description. BARF is exactly that Biologically Appropriate Raw food. Billinghurst and others add vegetable matter and other supplements. I am sure that there are also plenty of yahoo groups dedicated to them. I have been feeding RAW for nearly 5 years and did start with a BARF diet originally after dealing with 2 dogs that refused to eat a lot of the kibble that they were given.
  12. Ness that is what my active males eat. And when they are hungry they will eat 3 chicken carcasses. The carcasses i get have liver heart and other bits in them so they get there offal as well. Red Mal a raw diet would only have added salmon oil under Lonsdale none of the additives or vegetables on his version of a raw diet. When you add vegies and other supplements you are creating a BARF diet which is what Billinghurst preaches. On the whole I feed RAW not BARF.
  13. Hi All A lot of you think that a raw diet contains vegetable matter and as such it doesnt. BARF is what you are feeding. Meat vegetables and other additives in the form of different oils and supplements RAW is just that meat meat meat and bones, occasional eggs and canned or raw fish. The only thing a raw feeder might add is salmon oil to there diet. If people are interested there are plenty of yahoo groups on feeding either BARF or RAW. Billinghurst is BARF and Lonsdale is RAW. They are totally different diets. But what it all boils down to is what your dog does best on.
  14. Kristal In terms of feeding a Border Collie raw this is what mine get regularly 1 or 2 meaty chicken carcasses per meal 4 or 5 chicken thighs 4 or 5 chicken drumsticks a meaty lamb flap 2 meaty lamb shanks a pigs head raw pigs trotters a raw egg occassionally 2 - 3 lambs hearts a meaty piece of beef cheek 3-4 beef rib pieces The occassional tin of salmon or sardines. Mine also occassionally get dry food and then get fed Bonnie Working dog. No colouring added. They are all at good healthy weights and some are a bit porky but there teeth are good and there stools are great and easy to pick up. This is a RAW diet not a BARF diet though on the whole. Good Luck in your decision Feeding raw is not as hard as many people think
  15. Hi Leopuppy yes dogs can be given Aspirin They can not be given Paracetemol or panadol though. I cant off hand remember what dosage I was advised by my vet to use.
  16. Havent had any luck with neem all for my own personal usage so i havent bothered. Check out the testimonials on the website. And Lynda can tell you many more.
  17. I cant use Malaseb on my guys. I have had a few that have broken out in worse rashes and reactions from it. Its why i now use Groomers. Have never had scurfing or rashes ever with it.
  18. Give Groomers Shampoo with pure Evening primrose oil a go. Does amazing things for dogs with itchy scratchy skin. www.groomersproducts.com.au You can contact Lynda and ask her as well she originally brought it in due to allergies with one of her poodles. I have seen it work with really lovely results.
  19. Just remember that there is an age requirement for ET's which from memory is 2 years of age minimum and a maximum of 7 years of age. You will need to confirm with the rules as to that tho. I dont think i have ever seen a dog fail the obedience part as it is so basic and it your choice as to whether or not it is done off or on lead.
  20. Talk to the breeder about there personalities and your lifestyle so she can make a decision for you. Pups can be flown around Australia at 8 weeks of age and they can be flown overseas at 11 weeks now as ANKC has changed there protocol. It ties in with Rabies vaccines being given in there newly adopted country and not in Australia. For the record pups can come from NZ at 8 weeks as well. But have to be 11 weeks to go from OZ.
  21. From what i have heard from friends in WA it is a brilliant way to start pups off on the right foot in agility. Some of the current younger agility stars have been through there foundations class and have done extremely well in competition. If we had something like that here I would definitely be in it. Cheers
  22. When I had sheep like Tracey my babies were exposed on a regular basis. As we no longer have sheep, puppies when we have them are exposed to ducks. I cant wait to get my sheep back again Its amazing how quickly and how early that instinct can kick in. As i understand it the rules for herding Australia wide are that a pup that is 6 months old can start competing but has to have had stock exposure prior to starting. If they havent had prior sheep introduction before 6 months it would be a waste of time even entering a trial for HIC etc. Anyways thats my understanding of the rules.
  23. High Tail carriage in Border Collies is usually caused by an incorrect croup set. Yes they can be trained but it takes a lot of work and consistency. One word of caution do not use the word "Tail" its a dead set giveaway in the show ring.
  24. OMG How expensive!! I pick up pigs heads for a $1 chuck a couple out to the heathens and then let them go to it. I use it more as a treat for chewing as there is not that much meat on them. My guys adore them and all that is usually left after a couple of days is the jaw with its teeth. YUM YUM
  25. he may be allergic to the revolution which is an ivermectin derivative or he maybe allergic to the shampoo you used. Brushing certainly helps to bring the oils out in any coat. What you are seeing is scurfing which could be either a reaction to the shampoo or you have not rinsed him out well enough so he still has a layer of the shampoo on his skin. Personally i would be using Groomers EPO shampoo and washing him in that twice a week until his skin settles down. Also check his ears to see if that is where the smell is also coming from. What was he being fed on before you got him? Not all dogs do well on what we would prefer to feed them and he may need far more oils in his diet and possibly other additives to get his immune system back working properly.
