I wouldn't bother with the vet. Rip the rest of the toenail out. Bath it in warm salty water. Use something like betadine on it after you have dried it. Bath it daily for a few days.

How Can I Put Some Weight On My Gsp?
puggy_puggy replied to GSPVX's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sounds like she is not digesting her food if it is just passing through her. She could have a food intolerance or maybe be lacking digestive enzymes. I would cut out the pasta and rice if you are feeding dry food. -
Allergy Affecting The Ear Leather
puggy_puggy replied to TangerineDream's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yeast allergy? Have you actually had the ear tested for infection or mites? I would be getting the vet to do a slide and making sure nothing bad is going on. Chronic ear infections are not good and can make dogs deaf, effect their sense of balance and as 'lucknow' suggested cause hematomas. Do you use Revolution or some other product that stops mites and fleas? Sounds like he might need medicated ear drops. I would be using some sort of ear cleaning drops untill you are able to get to the vets on Tuesday. -
Could be a reaction to something. I would watch it. If it gets bigger then straight off to the vets but if it reduces then leave it. Don't panic. Wait till Tuesday to go to the vets if it hasn't improved in the mean time. The vet can put a needle into it and do a biopsy.

Anal glands just happen. Pugs are renound for them. We have throw rugs on the dog couch that can be taken off and washed. Can't say I am a happy mummy if some of that fishy slime expresses itself on my bed sheets but. I usually get my vet to empty the pugs once or twice a year. Some people have to get their dogs done every month or so. I am of the opinion if it is done to often it makes them worse and they can become infected and impacted. They can be removed in a surgery but it is rather risky with all the nerves around that area. More bones and chicken necks should help.

Could be Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiencey (EPI). Eating poo & not putting on weight are two symptoms.

Urinary Tract Infection
puggy_puggy replied to trishalouise's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Mmm her diet sounds fine. Some dogs have to either eat special food or take tablets to make their pee more or less acidic. I can't remember which way. Hopefully this second lot of antibiotics will clear things up. -
Urinary Tract Infection

What is she currently being fed? -
Oh good to here that she is getting better. I would not be taking her camping. If she is being vaccinated on Thursday that is in no way enough time for her vaccine to work and as I said in my other post her system has been so stressed for a long time she is more sussceptable to picking up anything. You also have to think of other peoples dogs that may be at the camping ground. Your girl may still be getting rid of her illness so might be putting other dogs health at risk as well.
-
Just be thankfull that you have grass. Mine is all dead from the drought. Isn't it a little unusual for a male's pee to be killing the grass? With me it's the females but maybe that's because the females actually squat in the middle of the lawn whilst the boys usually go to a tree.

Yep Brighton Dog beach is fantastic. It is totally fenced in and has lots of shallow areas to wade in as well as deep swimming areas. The pugs love it. If you park in Chatsworth Av or Glyndon Av you should have no problems in finding it.

Opinions On This Food Please. Looks Really Good To Me!

Could be a good alternative to the BARF patties. But I say why not make your own? -
I really don't know. It seems to have gone on for to long and I think that some other course of treatment needs to be sourced. Maybe she needs a different diet or suppliments. I would in no way be taking her camping with me. Firstly her immune system is obviously stressed and secondly she hasn't been fully immunised. You would be putting her life at risk by taking her.

As the others have said it should heal quickly as it has a large blood supply. Just keep an eye on it and make sure there is nothing still left imbedded in it.

Undeveloped Paw Pads And Cleaning Them
puggy_puggy replied to malsam's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am pretty sure that some breeds have paw pads that will always stay pink. I have noticed that pet pugs/show pugs that have had good lives always have much smoother, less rough, pads to the rescue pugs that have come out of bad situations, living on concrete all their lives, bad food etc. -
Think I might start a thread on what supplements people give their dogs for their joints. There are so many of us out there that have dogs, or in my case have cared for rescue dogs, that have joint problems. It would be great to know the best suppliments to give. W2S please don't think I was having a go at you. I just wanted to clarify for others that might be reading this thread what total rest is. There are so many people that have injured dogs that would recover with total rest but they think that total rest is just keeping them a bit quiet. Just wondering if ultrasound would have picked up the fragments? Or is a CT scan the only way?

OMG poor Bailee. Has your vet suggested that she now goes and sees a specalist? The only advice I can offer is for you to invest in a crate and puppy pen to keep her confined in.
-
Wow am glad that she was finally diagnosed correctly and the surgery has already made such a vast improvement. I have good things about Wing Tip Wong. I would probably put her on some sort of glucosamine or joint suppliment. You stated in your first post that you had confined her since the start of the lameness with short walks in the morning. This is not what confinment is. Confinement is being in a crate or pen 24/7 and only going out to the toilet on a lead and then straight back in. Going for walks is not confinment.

Can I Feed The Dogs Uncooked Corned Silverside
puggy_puggy replied to Miss Monster's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
To salty and because it's past it's used by date I wouldnt be feeding it to anyone let alone the dogs. -
Do you mean as the only meat in the diet? I give it once a week with the veggie slops and the pugs love it and have no problems with it.
-
They should be able to chew on it and break the bone and cartilage down into small enough pieces for them to digest. Lately I have been feeding the pugs lamb backbones cut down the middle.
-
They probably think it's alive.

I definatley would be changing vets. When my girl pug sprained her elbow last year my vet told me not to walk her, let her jump off the couch or have her playing zoomies with my other pug for two weeks. A plumber was here the other day with a gorgeous 16wk old Staffy. She'd done her cruciate!!! The vet made no mention of keeping her quiet - just some pills and come back in a fortnight I freaked out when I saw her tearing around on her 3 legs. OMG what is wrong with these vets?

Luxating Patella - Need Some Information
puggy_puggy replied to Mollyrulz's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
As lucknow and poodlefan have said it is a condition that dogs are born with so nothing that you have done or what may have been done before she joined your family would have caused it it just happend naturally. There are different degrees of luxation which would probably influence your decision on what to do about it. It can cause arthritis. I would put her on some sort of joint suppliment like glucosamine, sharks cartlage etc. As for keeping her quiet after surgery. You would need to crate her and not exercise her at all only letting her out on a lead for toilet breaks. If you didn't crate her 24/7 for a few weeks the surgery wouldn't heal properly. Dogs cope fine with being crated if you provide them with their favourite blanket and plenty of chew toys and other toys to keep them happy. -
Change her diet. Wash her in a medicated shampoo from the vets. She may also need antihistamines and a short course of cortisone to get the itchies under control. Definatley go and see your vet as she has a skin condition.
