Good Diet For Anal Gland Problem?
puggy_puggy replied to jabbawok's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If a dog is getting bones and fiber then that should help the anal glands naturally express themselves when the dog goes to the toilet because the faeces is harder and bulkier. When I used to feed dry food years ago my two pugs would always have leaking anal glands. I would get the vet to empty them at least twice a year. Since I have been feeding a BARF diet no leaks and no need for manual emtying. What sort of bones was the dog eating? -
Great news. Good luck with the rehab. Do you have a crate for her? I would get her onto a natural diet and add a supplement like Sasha's Blend. Cartrophen injections may be useful as well. It is nearly 8 weeks since Poppy had her ulnar ostectomy and corrective radial ostectomy. She has xrays on Tuesday to see if the healing is far enough down the track so she can have her cast off and start rehab.

Yes Bones and Raw Food. 2% or less of her ideal body weight. -
Mine get it in their veggie slops.

I think that if I had to choose between putting my dog in a crate for a month or putting it down I would be crating it.

Just Need Some Food Confirmation Please

Ho much does she actually weigh and how much should she weigh? 10kg overweight is a massive amount. How active is she? To get the weight off her I would probably only be giving her 1% of her ideal body weight. So maybe 3 chicken necks a day plus veggie slops. -
Why are you moistening it?

Great news about the clear margins.

Swallowing Raw Bones?
puggy_puggy replied to mademoisellemika's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Nylabones are not ment to be eaten. i thought it was suppose to encourage chewing and ultimately eaten. Maybe its not nylon bones i'm referring to. I'm talking about those hard whitish yellow knotted bones. They are rawhide. And really have no beneficial nutritional sunstance. They become choking hazards when soft and the way they are dried is usually with chemicals. Nylabones are plastic. -

Many dogs can not tollerate pigs ears because they are full of fat. After eating them they will throw up bile because of the fat. When pigs ears become soft they become great things to choke a puppy or dog with. Be careful with them if you do choose to feed them.

Crate training means leaving a dog in the crate untill you choose for it to come out. If you wanted your dog to use a doggy door you would have to leave it's crate open so therefor it would not be crate trained it would just be toilet trained.

Swallowing Raw Bones?

Soft none weight bearing bones like chicken, turkey and lamb are easilty digested by a dog gut. It's the harder weight bearing bones that they will usually throw up because the body can not digest them. The pugs get chopped up chicken necks, for some reason mine don't know that you are supposed to rip them appart before you eat them so swallow them whole so that is why I cut them up into small pieces to stop choking. They also get big lamb bones (spines and ribs/flaps) and sometimes kangaroo tails. -
Pugs hate having their nails cut full stop. With my girl pug, because she is little, I am able to flip her upside down and hold her between my legs to cut her nails but it is still a struggle. But with my boy pug there is no hope. He screams like he is being murdered and thrashes about like no tomorrow. I will occasionally manage to cut one nail when I sneak up on him when he is asleep. He will be getting them all cut when he has a dental in a few weeks. Occasionally you will come across a pug that doesn't mind having their nails cut but they are as rare as hens teeth. Pugs hate anything done to their feet.

I would be seriously considering purchasing a crate and confining him in there for at least a few weeks. Walking him and having your kids make him jump around is going to do no good at all and is probably making things worse. The cartlage flap needs to heal and there is no way that it is going to do so if the dog is running around on it. Confining a dog to a crate for a month is not as difficult as having to put your dog down because it has ruined it's joints. As a 6 month old he should be toilet trained so you would only be having to take him outside a few times a day to toilet and providing him with some chew toys. I would be also be making sure the meat youl feed also contains bones. Meat fed without bones can cause alot of problems in puppies bone growth. I would change the raw meat to either lamb bones, chicken necks or minced chicken carcusses. Get rid of the rice. Not needed. Make sure you do not overfeed at all. It doesn't matter if he looks skinny.
-
Make sure your puppy is as skinny as possible. Any extra weight is not going to help. What do you currently feed and how much? Have you been advised to crate rest your pup? I would seek a specalists advice before doing any surgery.

Pigs ears are full of fat and other yucky stuff. Rawhides are just the same. What about raw veggies? Or even a lamb bone.

They might be able to remove the lump when they desex her. How big is it?
-
Do you vaccinate at all? Most people vaccinated with a C5 which includes KC. My experience is that dogs due or nearly due for their annual vaccination (including KC) actually got KC from an infected dog I had here. And those that had just had their annual vaccination a fe wonths beforehand had no symtoms at all. I would have no idea about Adelaides heartworm rates. If you heartworm I would either do the once a day tablets, once a month tablet or once a month liquid that you squeeze onto the back of their necks. I personally do not like the injection that is yearly. Did the vet do a fine needle biopsy to look at the cells in the lump? I would be rather worried about a lump. Is she desexed?

Stop him licking it. It will never heal. Put an elizabethan collar on him so he can't get to it. Bath in warm salty water. Dry and apply some betadine.
-
If the skin is browny/black I would say yeast overload. The pimples are pretty normal for a brachy dog. Use the human face wash Pysohex to bath them if they become a problem.

You have totoally confused her by telling her she can pee in the house sometimes and not pee in it other times. Can she not have access to outside whilst you are at work? If so then I would stop letting her pee in the house in a designated spot and start toilet training again. Taking her outside to toilet constantly untill she gets the hang of it.
-
nope it was a change of mind.. they decided that a doberman would be too big to be allowed indoors and they dont want the floors scratched. Perhaps you should tell them that you will sand and revarnish the floors before you move out. They could get this in writing.

Maybe email the company and ask for a sample.
