Other businesses DO do that! I work for a major international law firm and we regularly tell new clients to go to smaller firms because we can't do the work in a way that would be economical to them. We could "screw" a client thousands for a debt collection, but don't. We tell them to go to a debt collection firm who can do the job quickly efficiently and economically. Wow - I have just been reading through this thread and introducing lawyers / charges and ethics into the mix sure is a brave move ! I must have missed that. Just as with vets you can choose to use a normal vet to perform a procedure at a lower cost or go to a specalist who of course is going to charge you more.

That's a novel approach, Paula. I was thinking exactly the same thing. So owning and caring for an animal should be a privilege only offered to the wealthy? The pensioner who lives from one pension cheque to the next isn't entitled to the company of a pet because they can't afford the inflated medication charges that vets think are their due "because they have a university degree"? We are not arguing here about the consultation fees of vets and vet specialists. They should be (and are) on par with GPs and specialist medical practitioners. We are debating the justification of charging inflated prices for medication simply to shore up the bottom line. If nothing else this leaves vets wide open to accusations of over medicating our pets. If some vets can't make the living they aspire to by such back-door methods, perhaps they should think of getting out of the business. After all, at least in the cities, there seems to be more vets than GPs. Unfortunatey Mum to Emma this has been stated several times and they just done get it. Charge the true cost of the service, I have said this numerous times. I do not have a problem with vet bills, and was about to have my dogs cateracts removed costing $4000. I had the total costing of the procedure prior and the drugs were a minor component. You failed to comment on the people who have a consultation, and then return for repeat prescriptions. Why should Joe Blow pay more for his consult, to pay for the many clients that come back each month to stock up on arthritis treatments, or their atopy meds? We have the mark up on the drugs, to keep the consult fee down. As has been said before, not everyone that comes in for a consult goes away with drugs!! Actually, 9 times out of 10 you do! If vets didn't dispense medications (or couldn't - as apparently is the case in the UK? Pls correct me if I'm wrong) in the same way that GPs can't, they would be justified in charging a higher consultation fee. Why do you think it is that GP's can't sell you medication themselves? Because they would be seen to be profiting from dispensing often unjustified medicines. This means that we only take medicine when it is necessary. Of course this doesn't apply to all vets, and probably only a small number of rogue money-hungry ones, but it is the duty of the Australian Veterinary Association to protect patients (of the four legged kind) from profiteering practices who tip their scales in favour of money over animal welfare. Let me think. I have been taking Poppy to see a vet/specalist once a week for the last two months. I have only once come away once with meds in the last 8 consults. Most vets do not charge a consult fee for arthritis injections they only charge for the injection. (which most often are one over a few weeks every 6 to 12 months) Most vets will dispense repeat meds if they know the dog and the onwer just as human doctors will do.

You would have to be questioning both vets if one doesn't diagnose it as a problem and the other says the problem is drastic and needs immediate surgery. $2,500 sounds like a specalist price.

Out of interest does your vet friend offer every client of theirs meds at cheap prices or only some? I am getting tired of repeating myself but here I go again. I was motivated to start this post by a friend who had her dog to her local vet for a sore eye. It was her reaction and that of others in the group. They were unaware of the level of the mark up on Vet drugs. The general feeling was that they expected a on cost to cover handling etc but not to the level charged. Well then she learnt something about how much vets need to mark up their drugs to run a successful buisness. Just as any other buisness needs to mark up their products to stay viable. You mentioned that this person was a victim of the bushfires. I am sure that if they had told the vet of thier circumstances the vet would have bent over backwards to help them out with cutting costs. Vets are not as bad as you are trying to make them out to be.

Hi Raz, If poodle3081 has friends that are vets - problem solved. She can get medication at cost price. I do get my medication cheap. How do think I know the mark up? Then share your cheap meds with your friends then and problem is solved.

Obviously your company would be broke if it was a vet clinic. If you are as educated as you say you are why are you being so ignorant?

So poodle what is your mark up on the shampoo, conditioner, bushes etc that you sell? Do you itemise on your bill the cost of the water, electricity etc that you use? You can not tell me that you do not try the sales ad-on of products to your clients.

Could be anything. - allergic reaction which antihistamines might help - blocked eye duct which could need meds or an operation - eye infection which might need antibiotics - entropion (eyelids rolling inwards and the eyelashes irritating the eyes) which could need surgery I might be incorrect but in tear staining I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with brown tears. The staining is from the skin and hair being constantly wet. I would at least bath the eyes with luke warm chamomile tea bags.

Very well said stormie. Wonders why the people complaining about the price of vet meds don't get off their arses and enrol themselves in to Vet Science at uni. When they have graduated they can supply everyone with cost price meds. I would like to see how long their buisness lasted.

She's not technically still a rescue if she has been adopted. I would never ask a vet to give me rescue rates on a dog that has been adopted. If her new parents are finacially unable to afford such an operation I would think they could go to places that offer cheaper rates to those that are finacially struggling like the AWL. I know that here in Melbourne Lort Smith will help people out.

Sorry but 2% to 4% is starving a puppy and what an adult dog usually eats. For a puppy you should be feeding 10% of their weight. So for an 8kg it should be 800grams and this should be preferabley be spread out over three meals. The patties already have veggies in them don't they? I really wouldn't be adding more then 100 to 150grams of mixed veggies & fruit (if you have a good combination of veggies in fruit in slops thne you shouldn't have to add any supplements to a healthy puppies diet). Weigh the patties and feed that way for breakfast. (forget about the 1/2 or 1 pattie reccomendations) Get some lamb bones and feed for lunch. Feed the chicken necks and slops for dinner.

I was going to suggest antihistamines but he is already on them. Some dogs need to be tried on a few different antihistamines till one that works is found. Perhaps it has become a habbit. I would probably spray him with a water bottle when he starts to stop him. Try some paw paw ointment to sooth. What sort of bowls do you use? Does he have any new plastic toys?

Reverse sneezing sounds like they are goose honking. More then likley it was this that was occuring. Covering their noses and shoving your fingers into their mouths to opening it forcing them to breath through their mouth helps. Brachy breeds are more prone to attacks. They can occur from over excitment, change of air temprature (cold air) or even air being to dry (heating during the winter). If he was actually choking on something I would have done the hemilich manouvour (I have performed this on several chocking dogs with sucess) If they are not breathing then mouth to snout is simple to do as well.
