Thanks for the advic Tessa32 I will only take my other 2 dogs on their usual walk until I know my pup is safe, I live in a rural area so hopefully their isn't much parvo around anyway.

I have just brought home my 8 week old Aussie Terrier puppy who has had her first lot of vaccinations. I have been told not to walk my other 2 adult dogs in public places until my puppy has had all her vaccinations, because my other dogs could bring the parvo virus back into the home on there paws. I was just wondering if this is possible or have i been misinformed? Thanks in advance

Hi everyone, I am picking up my brand new Australian Terrier puppy on the weekend & the breeder has advised me that they have been feeding her Eukanuba dry food. I'm not really a big fan of the Eukanuba & prefer the Eagle pack puppy food. Would it be safe to feed her the Eagle pack straight away? Or should I buy the Eukanuba & change her over to the Eagle pack slowly? I really don't wan't her to have any tummy upset. :D Thanks in advance
-
I voted Eagle pack I know its fairly expensive, but I think its well worth it. I have tried lots of other brands & was never happy with their dull coats, the amount of poos & the terrible wind But since putting them on Eagle pack my dogs are looking fantastic, & I'm happy to say no more smelly problems.

Hi Meg, another important thing you might want to look into is worm & flea treatment. There is many different products on the market for this, so its worth looking into it to see what you prefer. I use a monthly spot treatment called Advocate (not to sure if you have this in the USA) but it does fleas, all intestinal worms except tapeworm, & also heartworm all in the one treatment. I use this because its convenient & I don't have to mess around with too many other products, except for the tapeworm treatment of course Another thing is don't forget to buy LOTS of safe puppy toys for your pup! If your Yorkie becomes bored, it will more than likely start getting up to mischief & might start chewing up things around the house ( which I'm sure will make your mum Very very upset ) You don't want your pup to end up having to live outside, do you? Also make sure your pup is safe at all times & can't hurt itself in anyway, make sure it doesn't chew on electric wires, doesn't burn itself on hot ovens or open fires & watch what he chews up & swallows, you don't want him choking on anything, or need an operation to get something out of his stomach, thats blocking everything. Sorry to scare you like this , but these sort of things can happen & you need to be prepared. I actually recommend on you getting something like a puppy playpen, as its somewhere you can safely contain him with his toys & his food & water & you know he can't get up to too much mischief, especially when you are busy with something & unable to watch him. His bed or crate can probably go in there too. I actually bought one the other day for my new puppy, so that I'm well & truly prepared I would also look into the right diet to feed your pup, there's lots of information on food & nutrition for puppy's & dogs here on DOL, so I recommend you do a search. well that's all I can think of at the moment, if I think of anything else I will let you know Oh yeah I forgot to add that its really up to you where you do your shopping for your dog, I buy of the internet sometimes, but I mostly buy out of a good pet supplies store (preferably one that doesn't sell puppy's as these puppy's usually come from puppy farms & back yard breeders ) We don't have some of the stores that you mentioned like Walmart, but I do buy from K-mart sometimes if I see something I like :D

Hi Meg, if your Aunt says she is going to register the pups she must be a registerd breeder I'm glad your mum has changed her mind about the sex, I think a male would fit in alot better in your family.Lets hope your Aunt's dog does actually have a boy now & hopefully your mum doesn't change her mind again. I will say this to you again (I hope you don't think I'm nagging you ) but please get your puppy fixed at 6 months if you are not showing him, you don't wan't your Yorkie escaping & getting all the other little female dogs (that aren't fixed ) pregnant do you? :D
-
Nekhbet, from what I know of Meg I'm pretty sure her other 2 dogs are fairly old, I think one of them ia ateast 16, so I doubt they will be breeding from them. Meg I do agree that you should leave dog breeding up to the professional registered breeders, Has your mum & your Aunt made an arrangement, for your Aunt to use your puppy for breeding when it has grown up? Or maybe you are thinking of showing him/her? If any of these reasons are the case, then I understand why you might not want to fix your puppy. :D Its just that here in Australia, & especially here on DOL we are very much against back yard breeders because we have so many sick & unwanted dogs being PTS every year. I don't know if you have the same problems in the USA,but it is a very big issue here. As you know already I have already advised you on getting a male, as 3 females might fight alot. Sounds like you haven't been able to confince your mum yet Tell her that male dogs can be trained not to lift their leg inside the house. My Bailey is a male that hasn't been fixed & I've trained him out of doing this. Another thing Meg is what's going to happen if your Aunt's dog only has male puppies, is your mum still going to let you have one

Thats what annoys me about this forum, did you really have to mention that. Meg, ignore the negative comments, take the constructive ones, love your dog and it will work out fine. I agree BigDaz, Meg is just a young school girl who is very excited about getting a puppy, she asks for some advice & gets comments about Yorkies getting their neck snapped, she's probably been scared off & won't come back now. She is actually from Florida in the USA & I met her on another dog forum. I told her about how good our Australian Dogzonline forum was & invited her to come & have a look, (thought it would be educational & benefical for her) All I can say is Meg please ignore the negative comments & most members here really do wan't to help. If you read something you don't like just try & ignore it. This forum is really great & you will learn alot here.

I am getting an Aussie terrier puppy in a couple of weeks time & I will be training her to be an indoor dog like my other 2 dogs. When I toilet trained Bailey I trained him to use newspaper for his accidents, but hated the way the urine still seeped through to the floor. I was thinking of buying puppy training pads this time.I was just wondering if they are really as absorbant as they claim to be, & will I have less mess. Or should I save my money & just use newspaper again? Thanks in advance

Thanks Mita, I'm very impressed & also relieved, we have been using this vet for 9 years now & they have never let us down, they even saved Jessie's life when she was 3, when she came down with a very rare gastro disease. I'm glad I have got a good vet as I'm going to need one when I start breeding my beloved Aussies. Well I better go & collect my little girl now. Thanks everyone

Hi guys, the vet just rang us up, & jessie came through op ok & just woke up about half an hour ago. :D They flushed her with fluids to help her recover more quickly. They told us they also removed a very deeply embedded grass seed from her ear.She has been having trouble with her ear for some time now, & had been getting treatment for an ear infection, so the vet thought he would examine it more thouroughly during the procedure, & that's when he found the grass seed. He thinks it must have been in there for a long time, it was in her ear that deep. Poor thing she must have been in so much pain with her teeth & her ear. I'm sure we are going to have a much happier dog, now that these problems have been rectified, & her breath is going to smell much fresher too The vet says we can pick her up at 5 0'clock, I can't wait to see her, I've been missing her so much, even if its only been for the day, even Bailey has been moping around all day,I think he misses her too. I will also be asking the vet for pain relief, & if she needs antibiotics, & also about her liver & pottasssium counts aswell.

Wow! thats incredible mita to have a dog live to 22years. Thanks for your reassurance, I know I am probably worried for nothing, but when I heard that the test wasn't exactly perfect, I kind of freaked out a bit. I also know if I didn't get the procedure done she probably wouldn't live for much longer anyway & she would be in a lot of pain. I will definatly speak to the vet about dietry changes for her liver. Thanks for the advice

My 10yo female Aussie Terrier Jessie, is at the vets today to get 4 infected teeth removed & also to get her teeth cleaned as well. Due to her age I also paid the extra, to get the pre anaesthetic blood test done, to make sure she has no other health problems. The vet just rang up 20 minutes ago ( OH spoke to him, not me ) & told him that Jessie had been given the test, & that her health is fine except her potassium levels are up a bit & also her liver count is at 104 ( apparantly normal is anything between 10 to 100 ) The vet told my OH that these levels could be a little high due to the teeth infection & nothing really to be worried about. So he told my hubby that he assures us that it is safe to do the procedure, & my hubby has given the go ahead. I can't help but feel worried about her now, because of the high liver count. Am I worrying for nothing? Is 104 usually considered very high? Please I need some assurance, as I don't really much about this & It's now doing my head in, that something horrible is going to happen to my little girl.

I will be saying a prayer for Basil that he will be alright!

Congratulations! crate training is the best, I'll be doing it all again soon, we are are getting a new little female Aussie Terrrier puppy in six weeks time.

I've been using the Advocate for a couple of years now & i've never had a problem with it, i don't find it messy or smelly, i think its great because it does every thing ( except for tape worm ) in one monthly treatment. I actually just gave it to my 2 dogs tonight about 3 hours ago, before they went to bed & their hair is completely dry.

Is Advocate Once A Month All U Need To Do?
Baileys mum replied to johnwilly1000's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Johnwilly, if you use the Advocate spot treatment once a month, you don't need to give any heartworm tablets, Advocate allready treats this. Thats why I love the Advocate so much, you don't have to stuff around with too many separate products. Like i said all you have too do is give them some Drontal every other month. I've been treating my dogs this way for a couple of years now & i've never had any problems, IMO i have 2 very very healthy dogs. Good Luck! -

I've been using the Advocate spot treatment on my 2 Aussie Terriers for a couple of years now with good results. Applied monthly it treats fleas, heartworm, all intestinal worms (except tapeworm )demodectic mange, sarcoptic mange, ear mites & lice. I have never had a problem with this product. I use Drontal to treat for tape worm every other month. You friend could be talking about the annual C5 vaccination injection. I would never ever let my dogs have the heart worm injection, from what i've heard way too risky. Good luck in finding the right product for your dog. -
Worming - Heartworm, All Wormer, Fleas
Baileys mum replied to pennyw74's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I use Advocate monthly topical treatment on my 2 Australian Terriers, It Kills fleas, Kills flea larvae, prevents heart worm, controls intestinal worms ( except for tapeworm )contols demodectic mange, controls sarcoptic mange, controls ear mites & controls lice, all in one monthly treatment. I love it because it saves me from having to buy separate products & you can treat them for everything all at once. I just have to give them some Drontal every couple of months for the tape worm. You can start giving it to puppies from 7 weeks old. Buy the one in the dark green pack that says for small dogs & puppies. I've been treating my dogs with this for a couple of years now & have not had any problems at all -
How Many Vets Are Doing This?
Baileys mum replied to pomquest's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My vet obviously does not due this procedure yet, as i just got a reminder letter the other day that Bailey is due for his annual vaccination. But i will quiz them about it, when i make the appointment. -
Thanks everyone for all your advice, i would hate to think that Jessie was in any pain, i don't think i have much of a choice in this matter, so i will be booking her in for the procedure. Fingers crossed everyone that she will be ok. I just really freaked out when the vet said there was a risk at her age,but i don't want her dying of blood poisoning from a tooth infection either. As i said before she is otherwise generally very healthy, so she she should be ok .

When i first got my Bailey, he was terrible at mouthing & biting our hands. I rang up his breeder to get some advice & he told me to get a whistle & everytime he went to mouth us, to blow it in his face, to correct the behaviour. This method really worked for us & within two weeks, he had stopped doing it all together. I dont't know if this will work for your dog, seeing it is already 9 months old, but i suppose there is no harm in giving it a try.

Hi Dolers, i was wondering if i could get some advice & reassurance I have an 11 year old Australian Terrier that has very bad breath ( despite me feeding her raw bones all her life ) Any way my vet has told me that she needs to have atleast 4 teeth removed & also have her teeth professionally cleaned. Its going to cost me alot of money, but thats not what i'm worried about. The vet has told me that at her age, there will be a risk of putting her under general aneasthetic. I am now really unsure of what to do, I don't want her to end up with a toothache in her later years, She is otherwise very healthy for her age, i was wondering what advice other dolers can give me & what they would do in my situation. Cheers

Hi dolers, i was just wondering how i you go about getting my dog into agility courses & other similar dog sports? I would love to give it a go with my Australian Terrier. I live in Melton Victoria, so i was wondering if anyone knows of any clubs near me. Thanks Baileys mum

Hi Dolers, i am looking at changing my dogs dry food from a supermarket brand to a more premium brand. My vet has recommended Hills science Diet, but i have heard a lot of bad feedback about this feed & would like some other suggestions & reccommendations. Thanks Baileys mum
