Like others have said, I would be getting a new vet, there is NO WAY I would be giving that vaccination to a baby, I've heard alot of bad reports about it. I actually use a monthly spot treatment called ADVOCATE, it controls fleas, mange, ear mites, all intestinal worms (except tape worm ) & of course heartworm. I like this product because it treats nearly everything in one dose, so I don't have to muck around with separate products. I just get some tapeworm tablets from my vet & treat them separatly for this every couple of months or so. It is safe to give Advocate to a puppy after 7 weeks & I usually buy it from Pet stock, just ask the person at the counter for the puppy dose. I have been treating my dogs with this for a few years now & they look pretty healthy to me & I've had no problems with it. Goodluck with whatever method you decide on .

Keeping Puppy Mentally Active While Eating Their Meals
Baileys mum replied to NoodleNut's topic in Puppy Chat
Exactly, to mess around with a dog's main mealtime may cause problems down the track. Why not let the dog eat it's meal in peace. I wouldn't want my meal interrupted constantly because someone thinks it's a fun thing to do. My dogs get to eat their meal without interference. They eat shoulder to shoulder without issue because they know they have no need to protect their food and that no one is going to mess with their food and tease them. I also agree that dogs should be able to eat out of their bowl in peace, it is cruel to turn their main meal time into a game,& they certainly don;t need to mentally stimulated, it will probably only make them become food agressive. Let your dog eat in peace & save the fun games & food treats for training & playtime. -
If you want to be a dog breeder, I dont understand why you don't get a kennel prefix, purchase a couple of good breeding dogs (that have had all there health tests ) go to dog shows, buy books on dog breeding & do everything morally & ethically. I am sure you will gain alot more respect if you did all these things. I am a newbie breeder too & have made sure of doing everything the right way, so I get very annoyed when I read BYB"S bragging about their new litter of puppies. I think you have some nerve coming onto DOL ( knowing full well how most members feel about BYB"S ) & asking for advice IMO. ETA : I'm not on my high horse either & have every right to post my opinion in this thread if I want to, as I'm sure every one would agree with me that BYB"S are a no no in the DOL community.

Yes that's the same one we've been feeding my puppy, I knew there was something wrong with this batch, my pup is now refusing to eat it. My OH at the moment is returning it to Petstock, I hope they exchange it for us.

Thanks Poodleslave, :D could you please tell me what the normal colour actually is, Dark or light brown? I'm just trying to figure out if the first or current bag is the dodgy colour.
-
Ok so I'm presuming due to no one responding to my post, that no one else has had this problem with their Eagle Pack puppy food, so I might just bring it back to Petstock & ask them if it looks normal to them.

Hi everyone, I have been feeding my 12 week old puppy the Eagle Pack puppy dry food & so far she seems to love it. I am now onto my second bag of it but have noticed the colour of the food in the second bag is a different colour to the one in the first bag. The first bag of food was a very dark brown colour & this latest bag of food is a much lighter brown. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever come across this & should I be concerned about it. My Puppy seems to still be eating it & the expirary date on it says Feb 2009,but I was just a bit concerned with the colour change. Do you think I should return it & exchange it ( I got it from Pet stock ) or not worry about it & keep feeding it to her? I'm probably worrying over nothing, but I suppose you can never be too careful. Thanks in advance.

Hi Happie, I'm not too sure of the details but they where able to investigate more intensly into her ear canal when she was under the anaesthetic, & where able to spot it & remove it some how, I know they flushed her ear out aswell. They gave it to us in a small container, it was such a nasty looking thing & had turned black, so it must have been in there for a while. The vet said that we probably would have been irritating her even more when we where massaging the ear drops in as we would have been moving the grass seed around everytime we massaged her ear & as you can imagine it would have been quite painful. She was such a happy girl once it was gone. If you dog doesn't start improving soon it would be worth mentioning it to your vet anyway. I'm sure they will be able to explain the procedure to you if they think it is worth investigating. Good luck

Hi Happie, My elderly Female Aussie Terrier x had very similar problems with her ear for about a month. I took her to the vet & they also diagnosed her with a fungal infection & prescribed us with the same ear drops, however she didn't seem to be improving & it looked to be getting worse. We had her booked in to get some dental work done, so while she was under the anaesthetic they decided to investigate her ear again & also give it a good flushing out. Well what they did find was a nasty grass seed embedded deeply in her ear. This had been the source of her ear problem all along (not a fungal infection ) & must have been driving the poor thing crazy. She seemed so much happier after this was removed. Maybe if your dog doesn't improve in a week or so, you might want to bring it back to the vet & ask if it could be a grass seed. Good luck

Every time my 12wk old Aussie terrier puppy has a large drink of water she always coughs afterwards, she has been doing this since we brought her home. Do you think this is anything to be worried about or is she just drinking too quickly & choking herself a bit? She does not cough after eating food. I would appreciate if anyone could offer me any advice on this. Thanks in advance Nicole

YAY! I can happily say that my puppy has had no accidents in her bed for about a week now. Fingers crossed that this will continue. By the way thanks for the advice everyone.

I'm another one that has recently switched to eagle pack dry food. My dogs love it (including my 10 wk old puppy ) & I have also seen a fantastic improvement in their coat. Even though it is a little on the exspensive side I don't think I will ever go with another brand again. My dogs also get cooked mince, vegies (love pumpkin ) & rice, aswell as raw food treats during the day to keep teeth healthy. If I haven't got much time I will give them eagle pack canned food aswell ( but they don't seem to be too keen on this, but will eat it slowly ) My puppy is eating all these foods (aswell as her puppy eagle pack dry ) & seems to have a great appetite. She's doing reallly well so far & seems to be growing & putting on weight at a good pace.

I think you just have to be really patient. I've had my 10 week old puppy home for 2 weeks now & I've already washed her bed 5 times Even though I'm taking her to the toilet frequently. She is a very deep sleeper & seems to do it in her sleep the most. I suppose with time she will probably out grow this ( I hope ) My puppy doesn't have any problem with the rain, In fact she seems to actually love it. The last time it rained she just stood there getting wet, with a happy look on her face & didn't really want to come back inside. :D

Well if thats the case my dogs will be very disloyal. Honestly, that is just plain revolting. :D OMG No Way! That's so disgusting, Bailey is very loyal towards me, I don't have to molest him to gain his love & devotion.

Oh how exciting! I just brought my new puppy home a week & a half ago I looked at your list, & you might also want to look into worm/heartworm & flea preventive's. Check what your breeder has been using, I have actually just put some Advocate on my puppy yesterday. It's a monthly spot treatment, that does fleas, heatworm & all intestinal worms (except tape worm ) all in the one treatment. It's safe to use on a puppy after 7 weeks of age. But please check with your breeder or vet before making any descisions. :D IMO I found the only way I could get my puppy to sleep, was when I put her in a crate in my bedroom. On the first night I thought the same as you, & put her bed, toys, puppy training pad, & water in her puppy pen in our family room. Well she cried so much that night, you would have thought someone was murdering her We never got one minute of sleep that night. On the second night we got our other dogs crate out of the garage, put her bed, 1 toy & some water in it, & put it in our bedroom. She whimperd for about 5 minutes & then went to sleep. We had to get up a couple of times during the night to take her to the toilet, but it was a much better night than the first night. She actually love's her crate now & I think she feels safe & secure in it. Being in our bedroom with us had helped too, because dogs like to be near their pack. I still use her play pen during the day, its a great place to put her, when I can't watch her all the time. I agree about getting a good assortment of toys as puppies can get bored very easily. Also buy a good book on training a puppy & look into puppy preschool. MOST OF ALL get LOTS & LOTS of rest at the moment as puppies are full time work & you might not get a good sleep for a while It's all worth it in the end though. ;) Last of all ENJOY YOUR PUPPY! Good Luck! ;) Nicole.

Totally agree about rehoming them, IMO if you don't have time for a dog you shouldn't own one, they are not garden ornaments!

Hi fly1770, its hard work having a new puppy in the houshold isn't it. I know exactly what your going through as I just brought home my 9 week old Aussie terrier puppy last week & I've been run off my feet. I actually bought a puppy play pen & have set it up in my family room, its been a life saver for me, as it is some where I can put her when I can't fully supervise her. I have a bed in their for her, some toys, water & a puppy training pad, which I can happily say she has been successfully using at the moment. I still try to put her outside every hour, but if she needs to go before this she uses the training pad. I also have a training pad at the outside sliding door for when she is playing around the kitchen/family room area (I do not allow her in other parts of the house yet ) & she sometimes uses it, but I have to admit she has had her fair share of accidents aswell I usually just say to her AH! AH! OUTSIDE & I put her out for 10 minutes. I have 2 adult indoor dogs too & she always follows them outside too when they go to the toilet. And I always give her lots of praise when she does finally go. The main thing I have to work on at the moment with her is that she is weeing her bed while she sleeps in her crate, but that's another story ;) I think its all about having patience & perseverence, at the end of the day they are just babies after all. I really can't help you with the barking issue, other than your puppy is just rebelling when you tell him off. I would maybe just turn my back on him & ignore him until he calms down, He's just probably doing it for attention. Are you going to bring him to puppy school, he's probably getting to the age to start some formal training, my baby is starting in a weeks time. Anyway I wish your all the luck in the world with your puppy, just remember you are not on your own, there is many others going through exactly the same thing that your going through. You can also PM anytime if you want, if you ever need to discuss puppy issues. Take care Nicole.

Oh she is absolutly adorable! I hope & pray that she keeps getting stronger & improving every day.

I have had my 9 week old Aussie Terrier puppy for a week now & I've been trying to crate train her. I take her to the toilet about every hour at the moment, sometimes she goes & sometimes she doesn't. I also put her in a puppy play pen during the day, where she has toys to play with & I put a puppy training pad in there, which she has been using successfully ;) The problem is she has wet her bed about 3 times while she has been in her crate. This always seems to happen in her sleep ( she seems to be a very deep sleeper & sometimes sleeps up to 3 hours at a time.) Is it normal for a puppy to sometimes have an accident in her bed? I thought that the whole point of crate training was for the puppy to learn to go to the toilet in the right spot. I also read in a puppy training book that puppies will not go to the toilet where they sleep. She is a very happy puppy, seems very healthy, & has a great appetite. Do you think it would be wise to wake her up from her sleep & bring her to the toilet, before she does it in her bed? Any advice would be appreciated, as I'm getting annoyed with constantly having to wash her bed. Thanks In advance :p

I also agree to crate training them BOTH, not just the one or maybe purchase a puppy play pen,or a dog run where you could both of their beds & some toys. This will stop them from getting up to mischief.I also agree about the long walk. My dogs have a mountain of toys to play with, but if they didn't get their dailey walk they would be unbearable to live with. To be honest with you, if my OH or myself worked 10 hours a day I personally wouldn't even own a dog ( no offence ) IMO dogs need alot of your time to get the best out of them. I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but that is my honest opinion.

I have tried my dogs on eagle pack canned food & the fussy buggers didn't like it. :D They will eat the dry eagle pac holistic by itself though, & also have some raw food too. Maybe you should mix a bit of beef, chicken or roo mince in with it to make it more interesting.
-
I also agree with doing this. We brought our new Aussie Terrier puppy home a week ago, & the first night we tried to get her to sleep in her puppy pen in our family room. Well she cried & screamed so much that night that you would have thought someone was trying to murder her! :D The next day we dug Bailey's crate out of the garage & put it in our bed room. To our relief she was much more calmer & only cried a little bit before going to sleep. Now she is sleeping all through the night with no problems, only waking up a couple times a night to go to the toilet. Our other 2 dogs sleep in our bedroom too in their own beds, so I think she feels safe being with the pack.
