  1. That's the age of my litter at the moment, & there is no way in the world I could even contemplate letting them go out in the world yet, they are sooo not ready for it. Some so called breeders make me so angry.
  2. Because the ongoing cost of the bitch is part of the cost of breeding a litter. You need to factor in things like entry fees for shows, trials etc that are part of proving your bitch is worth breeding from. ETA the average pet isn't DNA tested as new tests become available, hip and elbow scored, yearly eye and other health tests etc that are carried out on breeding dogs. Ok, so what are the costs for shows, etc per year? If the bitch has a littler of 10 pups each time she is bred that's a fair amount of money. I have always wondered about this so would be keen to know the answer If she has 10 pups. I spend about $1000 a year on trial entry fees, training fees etc plus the time it takes but it is my hobby. Also I only trial about once a month not show every weekend. I don't show so you would need a show person to answer that. You seem to have a problem with the fact that someone may make a profit from breeding a litter. They also take a huge risk of loosing the bitch, the pups etc. I don't have a problem with ethical breeders making a bit of money out of what they do, I know most ethical breeders who actually care about dogs will rescue so I have a lot of respect for them. I would happily give that extra bit for the cause of the dog/breed. I'm a curious person, I would like to know what the actual costs are for breeders, that's all. i think that is their business and no one elses business. and i think its a bit rude to ask the question Why is it rude to ask the question? Do breeders have something to hide? Why then should I not buy my next pup from a puppy farmer? Are you for real? Have you not learned anything thru this site. You seem to have a problem with purebred breeders, so why don't you go elsewhere, after all this is Purebred Forum Why don't you direct your efforts and questions on the practice and earnings at the vile puppy farmers , after all they are only in it for the money, nothing else, pure and simple. The dogs health and welfare does not come into it at all i know this topic is doing my head in. i really think some of the posters are in the wrong forum as they really dont want to learn about pure bred dogs bred by ethical breeders. seems there is the start of breeder bashing happening (except if they are talking about puppy farmers!!!). Yeah know exactly what you mean, my patience has worn very thin with some of the posters and threads and they should bugger off and create their own crossbreed forum or join a puppyfarmers forum if they want to slag off purebred breeders :p I agree!!
  3. This is in reply to furballs enquiry regarding breeders costs, sorry if it is OT. I've just bred my first litter, & I can say I will not be making a profit from my litter of 8. After paying for my dogs vic membership, my prefix (including payment for prefix exam ) health checks on my dogs, vet fees including vaccinations, check ups, ultrasounds, check up after whelping. Extra food for my bitch during pregnancy & lactation. Then I had to buy my whelping box, towels, vet bed, medical/whelping supplies, syringes, bottles, milk replacer, heat pads, puppy pens,ect... Then I had to worm the pups, vaccinate/vet check them, pay registration fees for them, pay for their food, pay to advertise them. The price of my puppies also includes a puppy pack, that includes 7 days worth of food, a puppy blanket, some toys & treats for the puppy, a collar & lead & a puppy care & training book, photos of the sire & mother of the pup & a photo of the litter. (About $85.00 value) per puppy pack. There is so many other miscellaneous costs, but these are the main things I can think of at the moment. The point is after adding all the costs up, I will pretty much just about break even, I will be keeping one of the pups, so you could say I have benefited from this breeding as I am gaining a beautiful pup from it. I didn't breed to make money from it any way,I think for most reputable breeders it isn't even about the money, I did it for the love of my breed, It kind of annoys me when I tell people my bitch had 8 puppies& the first thing they say is "wow isn't she a purebred? your going to make a fortune selling all those puppies, when in reality after all your exspenses you actually don't.
  4. My bitch recently whelped her first litter (8 puppies) & she did this aswell. She had them gobbled up the second they came out. She ended up eating 6 , as I think she was pretty full by the time the last 2 came. She did have have some very yucky runs that looked like tar for about 24 hours afterwards, but after that she was ok. She had a very easy whelping (whelped all 8 puppies in 3.5 hours ) with no complications & had heaps of milk straight away. Nicole
  5. I received a very similar enquiry about 3 days ago, not exactly the same, but very similar. I just deleted it, it seemed too much like a spam to me.
  6. These pics are stunning Ashanali, what gorgeous babies.
  7. Heres a couple more of my litter, aged between 4 to 5 weeks.
  8. Here is a couple of photos of Jasper, the little male I'm keeping from my litter. He is about 4.5 weeks old here. Here is another little boy, that I'm also absolutely in love with, its absolutely killing me having to give him up, I feel like keeping him too. I'm hoping I can find a home for him within my family or circle of friends so I can still get to see him.
  9. Yup.. hate to hear these two particular excuses as well. Sadly, they are all too common. Sigh. yep.. I know a couple that had 2 beautiful dogs which they loved dearly for about 5 years, however all that changed when they had a their first child, & all of a sudden the dogs became an inconvenience to them. both dogs where rehomed.
  10. Yep Bailey will howl when he hears me howl, & also when I sing to him. If I say "I love You" to him in a high pitch voice, he will say it back to me in a howly voice, it sounds exactly like it.
  11. Poodlefan it's Sturvite/Struvite? Crystals. Thank you I will just do that. One of the other girls on here said her old boy used to have the same problem and he too is a fussy eat. He hadn't had them for a while and she put him on Eagle pack and he was loving it but the blood has come back again so I shall see what the outcome is for her. Is Eagle pack dry food? yes Eagle pack is a dry food, although you can get it in a can food aswell (although my dogs don't particularly like the canned food.)
  12. All my dogs get fed 50% raw & 50% Eagle pack holistic select dry food. They all seem to be going very good on this diet.
  13. I'm with Ellz & Aziah here, At the moment we are raising our first litter of 8 puppies, My OH & I have been handling all our pups several times a day since birth. My bitch (this is her first litter) has never had a problem with this, she loves & trusts us & has been a wonderful mother to all her puppies. In all the books I have read about breeding they have all said that if a bitch rejects/neglects one of her puppies, but is still caring for all the others then there is a good chance that there is something not right with the rejected puppy & the bitch can sense this. :p Maybe you should supplement feed this pup & get the pup checked with another vet, just to be on the safe side. I hope everything will be alright.
  14. I agree with this statement Cosmolo :p I observe my dogs all the time, & some of the things they do & seem to understand makes me wonder if they are alot smarter than what we give them credit for. I don't think we will ever really know what goes on inside a dogs brain, unless a super intelligent dog is able to somehow find a way to talk to us & let us know.
  15. Yep my dogs absolutely love their toys, especially the plush sqeeky ones. They also enjoy kongs, rope toys (one of the favourite games is tug o war, & they love their frisbee. My female Aussie terrier has her favourites that she knows by name, I only have to say "Go get me the elephan"t & she will go & get it, or go get me the chicken, & she will do the same, she is such a smart girl. I remember when we moved house we had all their toys packed away in a box. We didn't unpack them for aboput 2 days as we couldn't find them straight away, My 3dogs where so unsettled, & seemed very bored without their toys, (they kept pacing up & down crying, this also could have been due to getting used to the new house) however they seemed to be so much happier when we unpacked their toys. I do spoil them though, I have an obsession with buying them & they probably have too many But I know getting a new toy makes them so happy, & when their happy I'm happy. Here is just an example of the pile of toys they have in the back ground of this photo. ;) :p
  16. Got the same reply too, & I am definately not on any RSPCA data base. I have my litter advertised on DOL & another site at the moment, so that's the only way I think she would of got my email adress.
  17. Thanks everyone, I think I might wait until they are atleast 6 weeks old, & then I will start letting them go outside for short periods when the sun is out, in the meantime they are very happy to still have their play sessions in the family room.
  18. Hi everyone, My litter of puppies are now 4.5 weeks & are becoming very active. I have moved them out of the whelping box & into a much larger puppy pen, filled it full of toys & cosy blankets, they now have room to stretch their little legs & they absolutely love it. Most of them are also starting to grasp the concept of doing their poos & wees on the newspaper in the pen. They also get lots of one on one time with us outside of the pen, but I am now starting to worry that they might need to experience some outside time too & learn to wee & poo on the grass. My hubby is going make a fenced in puppy yard on on the lawn, so we can let them run around outside a couple of times a day, but I worry that it might be too cold for them at this time of year. (we live in the Pentland hills in Vic outer west & it can get cold here. Will it be harmful for them to let them out for short periods of time, when the sun comes out, or should I just forget about it all together.? Just wondering what other breeders do when they have winter litters? Thanks ;) Nicole.
  19. Yep I got one too, was going to start a thread about it myself. Scared the hell out of me. Basically a warning about the RSPCA raiding breeders homes & taking pups away, setting ethical breeders up to look bad & selling the pups for their own profit. It was a very long email & said alot more things, but that's pretty much what I understood of it. Don't know if it's true or not, but it still scared the hell out of me.
  20. :D Wow I love this pic, what a classic. :D I love everyone else's pics too, they are all very humourous, please keep them coming. Nicole
  21. Ummm sorry but that is against the rules of ANKC. The breeder must transfer the papers. The breeder you got your dog from just saved themselves some money by having you pay for it and if they did this with every pup (especially in large litters) they are getting away with a small fortune. There is also no way to know for sure that the new owners have done the transfer, which if not the dog is still technically in the breeders name and can be blamed if anything happens. I give a copy of the pedigree in the pups folder and the original pedigree is sent out to them in a few weeks. Have never had a problem doing it this way and have never had buyers question me. Have been doing it this way for 16 years. Leanne Ozstar, in Victoria, the initial puppy registration must be in the breeders name. The transfer of the reg papers is up to the new owners. Thanks for clarifying that Zed-N-Q :D I was getting worried after reading Oztars post that I might be breaking the rules. When I bought my puppies, I received the papers with the back bit of it signed by my breeder for the transfer, it was up to me to first of all become a member of Dogs Vic & then pay the transfer fees.I have every intention of doing the same thing for my puppy buyers, so its good to know that I am doing the correct thing for Victoria & not breaking the rules. I sent in my litter registration form to Dogs Vic last week, so I hope to get them back in time to give to the puppy buyers on the day of collection. :D Baileys Mum, Here are the Victorian Rules Regarding Litter Registration 4.1.3.4 A member shall not be entitled to effect the initial registration of a dog unless that person is the breeder of such dog and is the registered owner of a Prefix and is a resident of the State. 4.4.1 An application for the transfer of ownership of a registered dog shall be made on the reverse of the Certificate of the dog’s Registration. For dogs sold within Australia, the new owner is responsible for the lodgement of the application for transfer of registration Thanks for that, I do remember reading the rules on the back of the litter registration form, but after reading Ozstar's post I thougt I must of misunderstood them, so thanks for clarifying it all for me. :D It's a little confusing when the rules are different for some states.

  24. Here are the photos of Bailey wearing sunnies, the hair on his ears are also in desperate need of a trimming, which makes him look even funnier. :p
