Such A Lovely Future Puppy Owner

Yes it was very lovely...& I couldn't resist sharing it here...It was just so nice that in all their excitement of picking out a new puppy that they remembered & recognised the hard work I'm putting in...& I just know they are going to make perfect caring owners, makes me feel so happy. -
Hi everyone, So my litter of puppies will be 5 weeks old Tomorrow & some of my future puppy owners have started to visit to pick out their puppy. I had a lovely family here yesterday (2 gorgeous little girls & their mum )& I was very pleasantly surprised when they handed me a lovely bunch of flowers & some choccies to thank me for all the hard work I'm putting into raising & looking after their puppy. They then gave Brandy ( the mother of the pups ) a brand new squeeky toy to thank her aswell. I just thought it was a lovely gesture & it really made my day... The only thing I ask from my puppy owners is the promise they will provide a good home for the puppy & I certainly don't ask or expect any thanks for raising the litter, but it did feel nice that they recognise that raising a litter isn't easy & its alot of hard work,...& they made Brandy & myself feel very appreciated.

I currently have a litter of 9 puppies..so my 9.5 kg top loader washing machine is getting a bit of a work out at the moment, with washing the vet bed & puppy blankets. After each wash I usually have a bit of fluff from the vet bed & a little bit of hair, which I just wipe out before using it again.I am also putting some Dettol laundry sanitising rinse into the rinse cycle to keep everything hygienic. I keep meaning to having a look into getting a 2nd hand washing machine for all the dog stuff..but never seem to get round to doing it.

"Book Of the Bitch" A complete guide to understanding & caring for Bitches By J.M. Evans & Kay white IMO I believe this is a must have for any beginner breeder..I have found it very helpful. Other books I have found helpful & that are in my bookcase are- "Successful Dog Breeding" The complete handbook of Canine Midwifery By Chris Walkowicz & Bonnie Wilcox, D.V.M. "The Whelping & Rearing of Puppies" A complete & practical guide By Muriel P. Lee All 3 books are usually easily found on Amazon.

For a begginer dog/puppy owner I like the book "Puppy Perfect" by Sarah Hodgson...It pretty much covers everything for the new puppy owner. All my new owners get a copy of it in their puppy packs.

How are vet students going to learn if they can't practice on living animals? I know it seems cruel & a waste & it is very very sad ...but I would guess that some of these animals would have been donated from animal shelters & they would of probably been PTS anyway...so atleast they have died for a good cause. I'm sure that the students treat the dogs with respect...& I like to think that they are learning on a live dog, as these students will eventually be qualified vets, & might just have to operate on my own pet one day, so I would like to think they have had the proper training & experience of learning on a live animal & know what they are doing when it comes to operating on my own dog. I think there was a thread about this last year, & I'm pretty sure one poster said that not all dogs are PTS & from time to time you will get students that will actually adopt a dog.

Another Recommend A Breed Thread.

I think an Aussie terrier would be a great choice for your friend. They are enegetic enough to keep up with a kelpie cross, but also love their down time too & are also happy enough to climb on your lap for a cuddle. They love toys for stimulation....& I find they are very rarely destructive if they are provided with enough toys. They are also vey loyal & love to please...so I find them alot more trainable than some of the other terrier breeds. They are are lovely little characters..full of personality (Large dog in little body ) great with other dogs, good with children, very hardy & healthy, & have a very easy to maintain low shedding coat. I don't think the size difference would be an issue...my dogs have no issues playing with family members Rotties, & if you check the Aussie terrier thread here you will find pics that another Dol member has posted of her Aussie terrier & her Irish Wolfhound together (now that's a size difference ) I agree that if you get a puppy, they will have to supervise them together until the puppy grows...but I would recommend they do that anyway with any breed of puppy they get. -
Congratulations AdoubleJ on the safe arrival of your litter The pups are beautiful.

Yep I've caught a couple of mine already nosing around in Brandy's bowl at 2.5 weeks old...I will wait till the middle of next week when they 3 weeks old & then try them with some pink slushie.

My 13yo Aussie terrier x JRT has pricked ears & we have had nothing but trouble with her getting recurring yeast infections for the last 6 years. The vet would prescribe her with Dermotic drops to treat them & she would be alright for a while & then she would get it back again. The vet recently recommended that she have surgery for complete ear canal removal as she has now developed polyps in her ears...but after taking her to the Werribee vet hospital for a second opinion as we are not too happy with her having such a big surgery at her age, & she has also been diagnosed with a low grade heart murmur, they are now managing her condition with different medication & we can hold of surgery for now..as she seems to really responding to this medication well. She has also copped 4 grass seeds inside her ears in her life...so I don't understand the argument that dogs with floppy ears have more problems...Jessie is proof that dogs with pricked ears can have their problems too.

Maybe you should meet some more (original) Aussies ie Terriers. They are terriers and won't back down if threatened but usually won't instigate. Mine happily play with other dogs, except my male doesn't like large, heavier type, hairy dogs as he was bear hugged by a Saint pup once and since then been put of by the general type of dog, he also hates other dogs barking at him. Couple of my dogs' best friends are Danes and they absolutely love each other. They can be excitable and are very protective though! I agree with Austerra, You need to meet a few more well bred Aussie terriers...before claiming them to be DA. My dogs would most certainly not back down if they where threatened, but like Austerra said they normally would never instigate anthing either. My dogs will happily play with other dogs...& are even best friends with my BIL's Rotties.
