I wouldn't teach a young pup anything to do with jumping until at least 1 year old. It's not good for those little growing bones & joints. I have taught Tilba to shake hands, both. from that I taught high 5 & now were're working on wave. To get puppy to shake hands have her sitting in front of you. Have a food treat at her nose & gently push into her at an angle. To keep her balance she will lift the opposite paw for you to gently take. Only hold in your hand at 1st until she does it every time & then you can shake it. From there to do high 5 put your hand out to shake, but don't take hold. Just put your hand under the paw upright like a stop signal. You can also from there get a baby's spinning top & coax her to touch it with her paw. Then eventually press. All these tricks come from the original shake hands & you haven't moved off the spot.

I know what you mean. I've been lazy & only taught Tilba a few things, but she picked them up after a few repetitions.

Raw is great, as long as you don't mix the bones/raw meal with kibble. They digest at different rates & the bones will ferment in the gut if kibble is fed at the same time. I didn't know this until I went on a pet food forum. My pup gets a mix of Innova puppy & Supercoat Puppy with other things added in for breakfast & sometimes bones for dinner. The things to look for in a good kibble is having meat as the 1st 2-3 ingredients, no corn. The ones with grains as the 1st ingredients are the ones to stay clear of.

Welcome to dol. Your little girl is gorgeous. When toilet training puppies they need to go outside after eating/drinking, waking up, playing & every hour in between. When she goes outside praise her extaticly & give her treats. Every time. That way you shouldn't have any mistakes. If you do, she shouldn't have access to the house until she is reliable or unless you can watch her every second. If you don't want to have her in the pen all the time you're home put her on lead & tie it to your belt so you can keep an eye on her.

A couple of weeks ago I was trying to get Tilba, 8 m/o, to come inside. She just stood there looking at me. Then I said, do you want your breakfast. She was inside in a second flat.

I forgot about that. Not a good idea to take a dog's regular meal away. They need to get used to you being there while they eat, but add something more tasty to the bowl. I usually feed my dogs in different places but if they are together, Tilba the pup, will gulp her food down so Sooty won't get it.

That was one of my suggestions. When Sooty was a baby, (8 y/o in 2 weeks), she swallowed chicken necks whole. She would yelp in pain & it worried me as to what would happen to it. I then thought I'd give her lamb flaps & I separated the bones. She did the same thing. I stopped giving her chicken wings & only gave her 2-3 lamb flaps still attached so she would take time to chew them. As said previously, the acids in a dog's stomach digests the bones & all. Now Sooty will take her time to chew the tiniest treat.

On my list of DVDs to watch NOW... Crate Games Choose to Heel Balabanov plus to read: Control Unleashed Plus I've got Basic 1 tests at Croydon over the next 2 weeks so I'm practicing for those. ...being an inexperienced trainer and a perfectionist, I'm pretty sure my expectations are way out there but my dog is pretty good for his age and breed. Where do you get those dvd's from?

OMG!!!!! Didn't have that trouble while Tilba was teething. But afterwards she decided to chew the corner off the pantry cupboard that's in her room. Had 2 previous puppies in there & they didn't touch it. Mind you April when she was a baby chewed a circular hole in the lino near the back door.

Such a sad story. RIP little scruffy dog.

I always look at the 1st few ingredients on the label & choose the ones that have meat etc listed 1st & no corn products. Atm I have Tilba on a mix of Supercoat puppy & Innova puppy. She also gets sardines in oil, yoghurt, cottage cheese, raw eggs & raw meaty bones. Its also wise to separate kibble meals & bone meals because they digest at different rates. Apple cider vinegar in their water is also beneficial.

You used to be able to buy suits for dogs made out of the same material as ppls rash vests. I don't know where you'd get them from, haven't seen them in some time.

I never crate trained any dogs before I got Tilba. We had a 6.5 hr drive & she did well in the crate which I still use now, only for the car. My previous dog, April, I tried a harness & after 10 mins I had to take it off. She became so twisted in it. I tried a few more times with the same result. I finally bought 2 of those straps that you put into the seat belt holder & the other end on the collar. I used 2 to keep her from touching the windows.

Thanks for the 2nd link. I read the 1st link before I got Tilba, now 8 mths, & decided to wait until after her 1st season before getting her spayed. The vet agreed with me when I took her in for her puppy vacs. She said it reduced the risk of vaginitis or something like that. I've been having cold feet lately because of family committments in Nov & as she still hasn't come into season I've been thinking I may have to have her done. By reading the 2nd link it's reminded me of why I'm not having her done. There's so much to consider, it would be so much easier to decide if I had a male. Wait until after maturity.

Hello Honeysmum. We haven't heard from you in a while. How are you & Honey going? Is she improving? We would love to hear what's new. Did you find training classes?

If he has a pink nose, I'd make sure to use sunscreen. -
How Long Till A Puppy Can Last Through The Night Without The Need To G
luvsdogs replied to tracylacy's topic in Puppy Chat
I thought it was the other way around, due to size of bladder. You didn't mention if he wees in the crate. The idea of a crate is so they don't use it as a toilet, unless its too big for the puppy, in which case you can block off part of it until he grows into it. -
Well done, as said before baby steps. Puppies up til 6 mths old need 3 meals per day. I would leave her with water, with summer coming she needs to have fresh water available. Take it up a couple of hours before bedtime & hopefully she will start to hold on. I'm a firm believer in giving dogs raw meaty bones but be careful with chicken necks. I've heard good & bad stories about them. Sooty, my son's dog when she was a baby used to swallow them whole so I chopped them up but that didn't work either. I'm amazed they didn't cause her any problems, only when she swallowed them. Honey can have raw chicken wings, legs & lamb flaps. If she's spending time chewing them, there should be no problems. The chewing will exercise her & maybe she will be tired afterwards & sleep.

Hello & welcome to dol. I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your daughter. That's something that you never forget. You'll get through this with patience & the help of a behaviourist. I will message you also with some sites for trainers(they only seem to be in Wollongong & Illawarra.) & puppy info. I'm having a few problems with my 7 m/o pup still wetting inside every other week. In the beginning I crate trained her which worked for a while until she refused to stay in it at night without making a terrible fuss. I was prepared to leave her but having a hubby & sons working, they needed their sleep & went out to her. Now she sleeps on a dog bed in a small room. But because your pup was kept in a cage for so long I don't think crate training will work. How is she with other people? I have heard that the only good thing about pet shop puppies that they are used to people because they see different folks all the time. My hubby & I have been to Albion Park pub a couple of times the last couple of years for lunch. They make beautiful meals.

How Effective Are E-collars In Training Da Dogs?
luvsdogs replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I only asked where you were because different states have different laws. Like in Victoria you have to have a sign on your gate if you own a dangerous dog. http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/con...994294/s39.html -
How Effective Are E-collars In Training Da Dogs?
luvsdogs replied to KismetKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't know much about them, but I woundn't trust this dog an inch. Is the owner a dog behaviourist? If not I think she should see one. What breed of dog is it? Does it have issues with other dogs besides yours? Why was it muzzled? Where do you live? which state? what are the laws regarding this situation? I would not take a chance with my dog being anywhere near this dog especially if it's unmuzzled. Just my opinion. -
Congratulations on your new puppy. How did her 1st night home go? What did you name her? Can't wait to see pics.

I prefer to use a 1/2 inch 4' cottom webbing lead (much softer on the hands if dog pulls). Have used a 6' but am forever adjusting it. Although my son uses one for his bigger dog.
