  1. As well as the DOL link there's a great website where you can learn all about puppys & dogs. www.dogstardaily.com You can download Dr Ian Dunbar's book 'Before You Get Your Puppy' for free. If you explore the site you will find plenty of articles & videos to watch if you use the search bar & type in dog training videos. Also toilet training etc. As you have been told she was too young & missed out on learning bite inhibition from her littermates. It's not too late as Dr Dunbar says it needs to be learnt by 4-5 m/o. As for toilet training, I would be taking her outside after she wakes up, has eaten or had a drink, after playing & every hour in between. Don't scold her for going in the house. It's a natural bodily function & if you yell at her she will be frightened of you & go where you won't see her. I wouldn't give her free access to the whole house until she is reliable. One room at a time starting with a room with an easily cleaned floor such as bathroom or kitchen. When cleaning up the mess you need to get rid of the smell because she will continue to go to the same place. Use an enzyme cleaner available at pet shops & supermarkets.
  2. You can buy fresh silverside to bake. I don't know if its the same price as corned silverside. At least there's no salt.
  3. :p I got that book too. But haven't got any further than flipping through it.
  4. The 1st Dunbar seminar I went to was in 2000. He had a girl lay down with her dog in a drop behind her head with its toes touching her hair. She was to tell the dog to sit. It didn't. That night I tried it on April & she sat. Didn't do it again for a few yrs & she failed.
  5. At the age of your pup, puppy play is all I would do. Carry him out & about until he's finished his shots. Let him play with friendly dogs you know that are fully vaccinated & meet & greet lots of different ppl of all ages.
  6. This gives me something else to ask my vet about when I take Tilba in for her 1st annual vac.
  7. Flyball ppl use a tug or throw another ball for their dogs when they return. The only reason I can see that food is so popular is that it is instantanious. You can move onto the next thing quickly, while using toys or a ball toss, you have to wait until the dog returns & it's not ideal in a class situation.
  8. I just came across this thread. I 1st became aware of over vaccination about 6 yrs ago. I heard a holistic vet give a talk on the subject. At that time she said there hadn't been any proper research done but she believed that vac's could last up to 7 yrs but to be safe said 3 yrs. She mentioned having titres done but they had to be sent to USA. A member at my obedience club had a very itchy, allergic pom that she took to this vet & the titres cost her $60 per vac. Her dog was covered. April was around 9 at the time & I stopped giving her annual vac. especially after 2 ppl I knew with older dogs lost them following vac, & they warned me against it. My vet sent me their ann. reminder & then another. When I didn't take April in for her ann vac. my vet rang me & asked me why. I explained the above & after much twoing & froing he said he thought vaccinations lasted for 3 yrs except for kennel cough which lasted for 6 mths. But he kept to the ann. vac because that would be too hard for some pet owners to remember. It's been 14 mths since anyone posted on this thread, has there been any further advances re: vaccination protocals? I wasn't allowed to post on the titre thread so I started another.
  9. Hello Dragonreel & welcome to DOL. I had a bit of a look on youtube but couldn't find any Ausie content. Maybe someone on here has put their routines on there.
  10. There should be instructions on the bag as to how you change over. It's something like 1/4 new with 3/4 old for a week. Next week 1/2 n 1/2, next week 3/4 n 1/4 by the next week he should be on the new food. Here's a guide to raw feeding with raw meaty bones. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/diet/exp-diet-guide.pdf
  11. If you love your dog, why would you want to use physical punishment every time it does something wrong. I use food lure rewards to train a new behaviour & fade the food when the dog has learned that behaviour. By using food rewards with patting, the pats soon replace the food.
  12. I put over 12 mths. Like everyone says, it depends on the breed.
  13. I started by teaching Tilba to shake both hands, which led to high five, which led to wave. As Kyliegirl said no jumping, weaving & limitied crawling until he's much older. Tilba also does touch nose to hand or small lid or target stick & touch her paws to a child's spinning top & we are now working on playing a toy piano.
  14. OK this might be a very silly question, but does the format of these seminars allow participants to bring their own doggies? Loved his books and would be quite keen on listening to him for real..... They are a Bankstown Sports Club. I would say you can't bring your dogs. I've been there 2 yrs running to the APDT conferences & there weren't even any demo dogs.
  15. I used double sided tape on Tilba's ear, wasn't very successful. How do you glue them & what with?
  16. I agree with settrlvr. Give her time to settle into your home. She's had a traumatic couple of months 1st with one family & now yours. It's more important for her to get used to you & your way of life & to be comfortable with you. After she's settled in you can start to play ball with her. Bounce it around & make it seem like the ball is the best thing ever then put it away & don't let her play with it. After a few days of this she will be so excited to play with this object that you haven't let her have.
  17. That's my problem . My wish is to train harder & at least start entering trials.
  18. When I last heard him speak at the APDT conference last year I said I would go no matter what. But its just at an awkward time of year. I so wish I could go. Also it's not so attractive missing the early bird registration.
  19. Years ago they did it a Richmond, don't know if that's where it will be. I think Dogs NSW do an instructors course.
  20. I've never heard of them. How do they compare to the Billinghurt patties? Are they available Aus wide?
  21. Amazingly cute. If I only knew when I had pet mice.
  22. My dogs don't they eat them straight away. But quite a few years ago was visiting my sister in law. She has a mini poodle. Each time I sat in one particular lounge chair I could smell something very unpleasant. I'd sit down, say something stinks here, walk away, come back. This happened about 3 times & we lifted the cushion to see what it could be. There was a manky lamb chop burried under the cushion. Yuk!!!!
  23. This is the way I would teach a puppy that biting hurts. http://www.dogstardaily.com/puppy-biting Then read the pdf article.
  24. A puppy should learn the basics while still with the breeder. Sit, stand, down, stay, roll over & come all with food lures & lots of praise. Find a good obedience club now & try & book in for next year, most will be finishing up now. They take them from 4 mths when they've finished their vaccinations.
  25. I remember seeing that episode. Can you please refresh my memory on quantities & how they're made. At my obedience club we use Chunkers. Available from the fidges at Coles & Woolies. They're like little meat balls & easily break into small pieces. And the dogs love em.
