Bonnie Working Dog was recommended to me. But after seeing the ingredient list I decided against it. I only buy kibbles that have meat as the 1st at least 2 ingredients.

On the overseas forums they use tinned pumpkin for the runs & constipation. Apparently works both ways.

It also feels good to him. The only thing I can think of is to supervise him with the 6 y/o & the second he looks like he's going to do it, distract him with a toy or food treat.

Whats The Best Way To Remove Dog Hair From A Couch
luvsdogs replied to glendabenda's topic in Puppy Chat
One of those clothes brushes with the little soft fabric bristles. Clean one way remove lint the other way. There's a hand mitt made of the same stuff. -
It's easy to forget how puppies are after loosing a much loved member of the family. All human members of the family need to agree on a method of curbing this behaviour & stick to it. He's old enough to join an obedience club where they can help you with what to do. Find one that uses positive methods.

That's the type of training my obedience club did pre 2000. But they didn't mind if you took a break. Nowadays we have a beginner's class that teaches the basics as well as loose lead walking, leave it, fetching etc & some tricks. A lot of the time is giving instruction & demos then we watch you to see if your dog can do it & help with suggestions if you're having problems. And they have always started at 3.5 to 4 mths. Puppy pre school is for the 8 to 16 week old puppies.

Take a look at this site. www.dogstardaily.com It will tell you lots of info on training a puppy from the minute you bring it home. Use the search engine to find answers to your questions.

That's great news. We use chunkers at my obedience club for training treats. The dogs love them. Raw meaty bones, which is the natural diet for dogs, will make the poo firmer & white. If the raw meat or chicken is fatty cut as much off as you can.

Where To Hear About Seminars/conferences?
luvsdogs replied to Paws4Thought's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
APDT Aust have an annual conference towards the end of the year. Check out their website. -
My 2 previous pups have slept inside in the entry room at the back door. This is what I call the dog room. They slept on an old blanket, with April having a cardboard box. I would take them outside after eating/drinking, waking up, playing & every hour in between. Don't give him access to more than one room until he shows he can be reliable or you can keep an eye on him. Sooty was toilet trained at 10 weeks old & April a little older. They always asked/ask to go out. Tilba will sometimes................................. Tilba is the 1st pup I've used a crate with. She was good for the 1st couple of weeks, then decided she would throw a tantrem every night. I tried playing the radio, didn't work. I tried putting Sooty in the room with her, worked for a couple of nights. She was very loud, barking, scratching at the crate. It was borrowed from my cousin so I didn't want her damaging it. I tried ignoring her, which I would have done but oh & sons would get annoyed with her & go out to her & tell her to be quiet or let her out. I thin decided to let her sleep on April's old bed & she finally settled. I still use the crate for car travel & while I'm instructing at the dog club & she's fine. She still has the odd accident even at a year old. She'll be fine for 2 or 3 weeks & then have an accident or 2. It's my fault for not watching the time. The last time was on the weekend when it was extremely hot & we stayed inside with the aircon.

They say dogs won't starve themselves. So you could try not giving him anything, except water, for a day & see if he'll eat his kibble the next morning. Are you taking up the kibble after say 10-15 mins? & waiting for the next meal? Another suggestion is to put him on a totally raw meaty bone diet. Which would include a small amount of offal & table scraps. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/

I gave up on a garden back in 2000 when my son brought Sooty home. Then 7.5 yrs later I got Tilba. Still no garden & very little grass.

Dunbar Seminar Report

I came across this video link on another forum. For those who haven't heard Ian Dunbar speak. -
I was quoted for Tilba's spay last May after telling the vet that I was letting her have one heat first. Total cost was $370 which includes pre op blood test, overnight stay & an e collar plus pain meds. Of course I'm expecting it to be more nearly a year later.

I wouldn't take Tilba out for walks until she'd had her 3rd vac. but found out later it would have been ok. That's not to say you can't carry him on short outings so he can meet lots of different ppl. If you have dog friends with fully vac dog & they are friendly dogs then he could play with them. You don't want him to have any bad experiences but on the other hand it's very important to socialise him before 16 weeks. Has he been to puppy preschool?

Sooty was 5weeks 5 days when my son got her from a work colleague back in 2000. I left my dog with the breeder until he was ten weeks because there's been some research abroad to say that pups are that much better developed to go into a new environment. So if a registered breeder is 'caught' what would the penalty be if any? And can any action be taken on a byb? So many questions I know. Also is there any pressure by, say DOGS NSW or another body to educate pollies about this? I don't think a registered breeder would take a chance on loosing their reputation & the time & expence put into raising a litter of pups. Pet shops by law can't take pups under 8 w/o to sell. They would probably loose their licience & risk prosecution. My new dog Tilba was nearly 12 w/o when i got her. She was well socialised.

Dunbar Seminar Report

Thanks for that, I'm also disappointed that I couldn't go. From memory at the 07 APDT conference he said he was retiring from travelling & it would be his last time in Aus. The 1 step, 2 step method no pull dog walking was 1st mentioned at his 2000 conference. It's one of the methods that we teach at my obedience club. I can't say if it works because noone seems to put the effort in at home. Did the organisers say anything about producing a DVD of the conference? -
From what I've been researching, it's better to wait until a dog has matured physically b4 getting it desexed. It allows for proper bone developement amongst other things. http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHea...euterInDogs.pdf
-
It's illegal to sell a puppy from a breeder or petshop etc under 8 weeks old. That doesn't stop byb giving them away beforehand. Sooty was 5weeks 5 days when my son got her from a work colleague back in 2000.
-
Thank you! I didn't think of that. Would a pig's ear be better or should I just skip that and stick with the kong and ball filled with kibble? You also have to be careful of pigs ears as well. They become stodgy & if he swallowed a piece it could block his airway.
-
He sounds lovely but my son has an 8 y/o dog atm & he's just preparing for the time when she's no longer with us. It doesn't hurt to be prepared. Do you breed?

Boz is very cute. Have you checked out - www.dogstardaily.com There is lots of info about raising puppies. You just have to type your query into the search engine & get lots of info from differernt trainers. If you put training videos there are lots of them also.
