Help First Day Home - Problems
luvsdogs replied to Nixter's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yes what the others said. When April was 1st home, shock, horror at 5 weeks 5 days, I put a ticking clock in with her the 1st couple of nights. I stayed awake most of the night waiting for her to cry like the pups I had as a child, & she didn't make a sound. I was up early to take her out to toilet. She slept in a cardboard box for the 1st few months & was no bother unlike Tilba who was just on 12 weeks old when I got her. She slept in her crate for the 1st few weeks with no problems then she decided she didn't want to be there & made all sorts of noise & tried to get out. Eventually I let her sleep on the dog bed. All our dogs have been confined to the entry room at the back door at night. -
I asked the person & she said that seeing what other posters had said not to worry about not getting her spayed as the others seemed to think it was a behaviour problem that could be settled after the spay.

When she barked at the man we both laughed & we walked past him into the waiting. I'm guessing I pulled the lead a little to get her past. When she was backing away from the cat cage & picture I talked to her saying what they were & nothing to be worried about. A mth or so ago oh told me she was worried about something & he realised it was one of the garbage bins in the driveway. Not somewhere it usually is. STITCH - She goes to jump on everyone we pass, at shows, obedience club, in the street. I usually pull her away & say no jumping. Dog ppl usually don't mind but you don't know with strangers. She looks friendly & gets excited when she see most ppl.

Just found this thread this morning. There has been talk in recent weeks at my obedience club about doing rally o. One of our head instructors also goes to Sutherland club to do agility & flyball. Will have to ask her if she's going/knows about it. Sounds like it will be a great weekend. We dabbled in rally o about 5 yrs ago & nothing became of it.

Maybe the sudden drop in her sex hormones that will occur when she is desexed ..... at certain times this can lead to the dog becoming a bit irritable or fearful, more than normal. Maybe they are concerned that on top of the fact that she's exhibiting this behaviour anyway, will impact? How old is she and has she had a season? If so, how long ago? Tilba turned 14 m/o on Thursday. She started her 1st season 3 days b4 10 m/o. I was thinking this morning that it may be a fear period. Yesterday at obedience training there were no dramas. Only a couple of men around but they weren't really near us. I'll ask about being there after she has the op & see if they'll let me see her while she wakes up. My last border April was a bit fear aggressive & I don't want Tilba to be the same way. She has had a much better start & temperament than April had, so don't want to mess this up.

Thanks Jigsaw. On another forum someone also suggested not getting her spayed until its sorted, do you know what they possibly meant. She's booked in for this Monday.

Tilba's behaviour is starting to concern me a little. She's mostly outgoing with ppl, wanting to jump on everyone she meets. This morning in the vet's parking lot she went over to a man wagging her tail & was about to jump on him. He said hello to me so I was going to let him pat her. When he bent over to do so she started barking at him. While waiting in the waiting room she was happy & friendly to ppl there & after they left she noticed the empty cat cage & started staring at the hammock at the top of the cage & backing away from it. Then she noticed a large photo of a missing dog & started doing the same thing. When we finally got in to see the vet she went up to him, put her paws on his waist for a pat, wagging her tail. I explained why we were there & he went to look her over & she backed away & wouldn't go anywhere near him. So I had to put her on the table for the exam, which she was fine with. There have been a few instances at home when friends have been over, men, that she's been wary of & not wanted to go near. How can I gain her confidence back?

If she has kibble, scatter about 1/2 her breakfast all around (the pen if you're going to use it outside). The other half you could freeze in a kong. This will give her something to do when you leave & she may forget that you've gone. After that hopefully she'll have a sleep & be ready to greet you when you come home.

You all have me worried. Are all these dogs spayed? I'm having Tilba spayed on Monday & this is one of my concerns with the op. My last bitch April developed incontinence in later life. I found with her she was allergic to wheat, so she was unable to have kibble. Over the years she had a couple of courses of hormone tablets which worked & I had to make sure no one gave her biscuits or bread.

I have never used the puppy pads & from what I've read on other forums not many ppl do. As above a pup should be taken out to toilet after waking up, after eating/drinking, after playing & every hour at other times. Don't let him have access to more than 1 room at this stage. Once he knows what to do & gets more reliable he can access one room at a time. Don't let him out of your site, if you can't watch him, get a crate for short term confinement or a small room like laundry or bathroom where messes can be cleaned up properly. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/housesoiling

Use the triangle of temptation from K9 , posted at the top. And also don't make a fuss when you arrive home or leave. As I rule I NEVER NEVER say goodbye to my dogs, I just leave. Otherwise you are providing a cue to your dog that will let him know you are going , likewise when you arrive home do not make a fuss as you can reinforce to the dog that ALL IS OK NOW because mum and dad are home, strengthening the dogs feeling that it is bad when you are not around. Finally stop mothering the dog , give him some space and ignore him when you are at home everynow and then. When mine were pups I would just ignore them for ages at a time to teach them to be on their own especially in a family where owners go to work etc. I know it is hard to stop playing with puppies but it is important IMO. - this does not mean neglect your dogs, just give them some space. If you don't nip this in the backside it will turn into a nightmare. Good advice. Another thing you can try is to pretend your going out & come back in immediately. Do this a number of times, lengthening the time your gone. As above don't make a fuss or look at him each time you leave & return.

My dog has a tin of sardines every week or so. I divide it amongst 4 meals. The fish with the heavy metals are the big deep sea fish.

When my son found our kitten abandoned the vet vaccinated not long after, she was about 3 w/o when found. When she was having her 3rd vaccination the vet said it I'd waited an extra week for the 1st one she would only have had to have 2 instead of 3. But as we didn't know where she came from it was suggested to do her younger at the 1st. Can't remember now how old she was as it was over 2 yrs ago.

Aggressive Dogs And Group Obedience Classes
luvsdogs replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I go to the Saturday classes & in beginners pet dog classes we have 8 dogs per class with at least 2 instructors. The higher classes have more & sometimes have to be joined due to lack of instructors. Tuesday night training are the triallers mostly trained by an obedience judge. I haven't been to the pet dog classes, but know they are taken by Delta instructors. When I initially called Western Suburbs and explained that my dog was dog aggressive, they suggested going to the Tuesday night trialling class regardless of whether I wanted to trial or not. I would think this is because being the trialling class the dogs would be better behaved and not as exciteable and more under control which is what you want for a reactive dog. That's right, on a couple of occasions we have put a reactive dog in the higher class to be with calmer less reactive dogs. -

I have too. Only time can help to heal & the sweet memories will over take the pain. RIP little Lycy.

That is so sad & such a shock. I just found your thread & read it all through my tears. RIP to little Boz. He was too young to go so soon.

A member of my obedience club got her 2nd staffy about 18 mths ago, they are full brother & sister. She was overwhelmed by how active & naughty he was, very unlike his older sister who was a quiet, gentle dog.

Aggressive Dogs And Group Obedience Classes
luvsdogs replied to ruthless's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I go to Western Suburbs & if the dog is mildly aggressive we have them go around the outside of classes far enough away that the dog doesn't react. If there is a real problem we will recommend you go to a vet behaviourist to be assessed/helped. -
Totally Wild Flyball Filming
luvsdogs replied to Squirt's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I love watching flyball & agility. Tilba's 2 aunties do flyball. -
Congratulations to all the winners. I will have to spend more time with basic training so Tilba & I can start trialling.
-
I would take her & a urine sample to the vets. She may have a bladder infection. She should be able to hold for an hour. The dribbling when ppl are over can be submissive urination & is normal for some puppies.
-
Have you tried her on raw meaty bones? They harden up the poo.
-
I would get her into kindy asap. You don't have to wait usually for the last vac as all the pup there are in the same boat. As far as I know they only take pups up to 16 weeks old.
