  1. This is my favourite site for anything pup/dog. There's also Before You Get Your Puppy which takes you through to the 1st weeks at home for a new puppy. If you get a chance to read both books, reasonably easy reading, then you can use the search engine for any other questions you have.
  2. I'm going to be like you. I'm a lazy trainer & have found over the last few weeks the things I have to concentrate on. About the only thing Tilba knows for sure is, where heel is. Her recall is poor, her stays are poor except for waiting for her dinner, & forget stand for exam, she's a wriggle wart.
  3. Introduce the 2 dogs on neutral ground. Maybe you can use a friend's or family member's yard? Introducing dogs to cats.http://www.thecatsite.com/Behavior/50/Introducing-Cats-to-Dogs.html
  4. I strongly suggest you read this link & have a look around the rest of the site & use the search engine for any problems, advice you need. You can also search for training videos & listen to Ian Dunbar's radio programme i-woofs.
  5. Is it sold in NSW or do you have to order from QLD?
  6. Hmm, that's certainly not been my experience Than you haven't trained a border collie.
  7. This is just the thread I needed to see. At trial time, July, it almost always rains & I'm always scrambling for something to keep the rain out. Gortex sounds wonderful. Do all the camping, boat, horse stores sell jackets made of it?
  8. Dr Ian Dunbar. Check out the website Before You Get Your Puppy Brilliant website with lots of great articles. Good luck with the new puppy I feed a BARF diet, but don't feed any cereal. A dog's digestive tract isn't designed to eat cereal. Dog food companies use it as a cheap source of protein and filler. Cereal products are the biggest cause of allergies. If we have a leftover rice or pasta dish I'll give it to Pele, but it's not part of her regular diet Crates are great! I don't think that we would have survived Pele's puppyhood without a crate. Pele loves her crate and chooses to go in their rather than her basket. If we are at a dog show or obedience trial I have to bribe Pele out of her crate That's the website I always recommend to new puppy owners. Keep in mind that young pups up to 6 m/o need 3 meals a day & from 6-12 m/o 2 meals a day.Is there any way you can come home at lunchtime or have someone else feed him in the middle of the day at least for the 1st weeks after getting him.
  9. Is this person a certified dog trainer & if so where from?
  10. Don't really know. Many years ago my cousin's young dog ate 2 hw tablets when he snatched the one meant for their older dog. The vet said he would be ok. These days with the hw vaccination I have heard that they are given an extra large dose of medication so it lasts for the 6 mths or year.
  11. You could try the hot water bottle & ticking clock method. It worked when I got April.
  12. My dog sleeps in her own 'room', it's also where my previous dog slept. When we take her away for weekends she sleeps in the room with me in her crate.
  13. Agree with Keshwar. If you want the pup to walk on say the left only, only reward on the left. If he's elsewhere lure him to your left & reward.
  14. Positive training is rewarding the dog for doing something you like with a food reward or game etc. Ignore the things you don't like. Dolphins, bears, tigers etc are trained this way. If a dog is punished with a collar check they often shut down or refuse to do the particular thing because they are frightened to do the wrong thing again for fear of another collar check.
  15. The easiest way to stop this is if Kammy were to give him a little nip now & then. If he's not doing this it's up to you to distract him with a game or treat. Time out if this doesn't work.
  16. Puppies are usually wormed every 2 weeks, puppy wormer, up to 3 months old then monthly until 6 mths them 3 mthly from then on. Unless they are on a multiple tablet for heartworm, worms, fleas etc. Sardines in oil could help a dull coat, as does raw eggs. Are you feeding her 3 times a day? I would give her a little more to help her put on a little more weight. It's advisable to grow pups slowly but you should only just be able to feel the ribs. If there sticking out or easily felt she needs to be fed more.
  17. There is no way he can take it off. I've watched him play with this toy for ages before I will leave him alone with it. he is more interested in biting the sock part where the biscuits are. Hi charleswentworth, could i use a normal sock with some yummy stuff in it and knot the end, would that have the same interest for him,or too easy to rip open and pig out? That's a much better idea. If he's not a determined chewer & only gets the food out & not eat the sock. Pigs ears are dangerous too, the go all soggy & can choke on them. Try freezing a sardine or whatever you can think of in a small container of water. The sardine breath doesn't last that long. Tilba has sardines at least every week.
  18. Oh my goodness, it all sounds so exciting. Will there be room for a couple of spectators?
  19. If they do I'd say it could be anywhere in the world, so maybe not so easy to get to.
  20. I was also going to suggest a 2nd ball. If that doesn't work do the best you can to get the ball & put it away. If she won't play fair the game stops.
  21. Waiting while I put the food bowl down is one of the 1st things I teach a puppy. Pup is usually sitting. I hold my hand against the chest, which will eventually be the wait signal in front of their nose, while I put the bowl down. If they get up remove the bowl , try again. eventually they figure out that they won't eat unless they remain seated. After a few tried add the cue word/words. Eventually you can get the dog to wait longer before allowing to eat. Once they know this you can follow the same principle for stays. Make sure the dog knows what is required for stay & add time before you take steps back, one at a time. Start in a quiet place with no distractions before you try different places. Always return to your dog & praise before allowing them to move. To teach shake hands, hold a piece of food on the side of the mouth & gently push the treat on the diagonal against the mouth & the dog will off balance & lift the opposite paw. Take gently & don't grab as you may hurt the dog. From shake you can teach high 5 by not taking the paw, but holding your hand straight up & pushing against it. From that you can get the dog to wave by teasing it by not taking the paw & wave your hand at the dog.
  22. I'll hopefully be there as a spectator on Sunday. It's wonderful socialisation for a dog that won't fetch. How many teams are you expecting?
  23. Did you get him from a breeder. They usually give you a diet sheet on what to feed. With my dog at 11 w/o when I got her it was 1/2 dry 3 times a day with either sardines, yoghurt, cottage cheese, mince or a raw egg. A puppy up to 6 mths old should get 3 meals a day & 2 meals from 6-12 mths or for life if that's what you want. If you're at work all day I know it's hard to do this, but certainly on the weekends. As someone else said you don't want to feed kibble & meat/raw meaty bones in the one meal & grow pups slowly especially the larger breeds for the reason given. Also advisable to restrict exercise until 12 m/o. He's better off being given chunks of raw meat or rmb to exercise his teeth & gums. Mince just goes down as a globular mass. The kibble is only soaked for young puppies after weaning & you should gradually give it to him whole.
  24. Socialise, socialise, socialise. You only have until he is 16 weeks old to get him used to all he will encounter in his life. That includes all ages of dogs & people. Everything he will encounter in you home & backyard. I have had both types of dogs, the ones not allowed out until the completion of vaccinations & my present bc who has been well socialised & she's very friendly to people & most dogs. www.dogstardaily.com Do a search of puppy socialisation. You can also download the books Before & After You Get Your Puppy by Dr Ian Dunbar.
  25. That's what I'm training Tilba with. I came across a great site that gave implicit instructions on whistle training a recall. You start off in a quiet room in the house. Blow the whistle, treat. Do this for 5 minutes several times a day. Then go to different rooms, then slowly add in distractions. Then go outside into the back yard, front yard, footpath, park etc. Whistle treat for every place you practice. Your dog will come in without even thinking about it.
