  1. Did you only give her only the chicken wings in replace of her regular food as given by the breeder? I have heard that pups/dogs can have diarrhoea from eating raw bones when not used to them. Not had a problem with my dogs. It usually has the reverse effect with nice hard droppings. When I was a young girl my mum used to give new pups a wheet bix softened in milk & they used to get diarrhoea, mum used to tell me not to handle the pups too much to prevent this. Of course now-a-days we know all of that is wrong.
  2. Worming is done every 2 weeks up to 12 weeks of age than usually an all wormer every 3 mths. With the more modern all in one products this can be monthly. It is not necessary to heartworm test a pup. As stated it takes 6 mths for the worms to mature & by giving the meds in the beginning stages it gets rid of them if there. If your vet ever suggests getting the 12 mth h/w vaccination, don't it was banned in the US & they only use the 6 mth vac. It has been re-introduced with restrictions. http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2008/06/05...80311212687545/ Here's the link to the thread from DOL http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=153632 ETA I have always found Advantage to be good at preventing fleas, an all wormer & h/w monthly tabs. With previous bc who had a flea allergy only used to use from Sept/Oct to Apr/May. With Tilba have used it for the 1st yr & 1/2 & now trialling Sentinal.
  3. My parents only ever used Gammawash on the dogs for fleas. Up until the mid 60's my parents had a holiday house on a cat with us whenever we went there which included 4-6 weeks of the Christmas holidays. I don't ever remember the paralysis tick being mentioned in relation to the dogs nor any preventive or treatment being used. Don't even remember if they checked for ticks, only for fleas. If you go to the South Coast now they can be a problem almost year round. My son lives in Ulladulla behind a reserve & they found a tick on their dog in August.
  4. You put so well why you should not get litter mates. I have only ever had 2 dogs 7 yrs apart but you still need to do things separately with them otherwise they could stress out when one is left behind. I think it could also be worse for those who have litter sisters. Look forward to hearing how you settle this problem & the outcome.
  5. I would be reporting her to the owner/manager of the shop. How many other poor ppl does she do this to?
  6. Hi Jules When I was a Chief Instructor I rostered people on 3 times per month. If someone was away they notified me and I took them off the roster. Even people who didn't want a break got one - avoid burnout. To do this you need a lot of instructors. I had over 40, and ran 2 instructor training sessions per year. Some people don't want to instruct - but there are many jobs in a club. If you don't enjoy instructing, find another task (helping with trials / equipment / new members / etc). If you don't enjoy instructing you won't do it well <smile>. How long is a piece of string? I've been putting in for nearly 30 years. If you get something out of a club, put something into it. If you don't get something out of a club, leave and find another. What club was that Speedy? Back in the day I don't think my club had any more than 10 instructors.

    Feeding

Exactly. My 1st bc when she was about 9 & hadn't had many bones was told by the vet that she needed to have a scale & clean b4 too old for the anaesthetic. I changed her diet over to mostly raw chicken bones with some lamb flaps & necks. The next year when she went in for her check-up the vet said her teeth were good for her age. Saved myself over $200 at the time in vet bills.
  8. I haven't had a back yard garden for 9 yrs. I have a really large pot with a frangipani in it that they don't touch & the rest on an old table. My 1st bc destroyed a lovely hibiscus I once had in a pot. Fence it all off. If he has access to the yard while you're at work as well as buster cube type toys you can also scatter his breakfast all over & it will take him longer to eat than being in a bowl. After he's searched for all the bits & checked that he hasn't missed any he'll be ready for a nap. I tried the tabasco sauce trick to try & stop 1st bc from chewing some lattice. Did not work, try the above methods. With a large breed pup I would be cautious with long walks until he's older & his joints are properly formed. Ok if you include lots of stops & some training along the way.
  9. Would like to see before & after pictures of Charlie.
  10. As everyone has said having the snip won't change his character or temperament. I would never give my dogs the yearly heartworm after reading the problems & deaths that occured in the US & they only have the 6 mth heartworm injection. As for the yearly vaccination I stopped giving them to my previous Border Collie at about 9-10 yrs old after 2 friends warned me against them when their dogs, approximately the same age, died following their yearly vac. One a GSD had a heart attack & the other a Sheltie heamoraged & even after a blood transfusion didn't survive. At the time my vet tried to get me to get her vaccinated but I kept telling him the reasons & I had also been to a workshop where a holistic vet had told us that she thought that vacines could possibly last for 7 yrs but 3 at the least. When I took my current bc for her annual vac she was given a 3 yrs shot. Still not sure if it was 3 times as strong as the annual vac or the same. My son has a 9 y.o mixed breed dog & she hasn't been vaccinated since she was 8 & won't be from now on. The only thing they need is annual kennel cough vaccinations.

    Feeding

Dogs were meant to eat raw bones. As Miss Danni said be very careful of the long femur bones. The ends with the cartilage & the marrow but the bones can break teeth. Both my previous dogs broke off the tip of a k9 tooth on these so I will no longer give them. Here's a few myths dispelled on feeding raw meaty bones. http://rawfed.com/myths/
  12. I found that Troy Fly Repellent worked well, available at pet warehouses, some pet shops & larger chemists.
  13. Tilba chases my cat away when she has her food bowl ready & is on guard the whole time unless I lock the cat in another room. She learnt this from our older dog who has always been protective of her food from all types of animals we've had, fur & feathered. It's not something I like so the dogs are fed separately to prevent issues.
  14. Is Barry & the naturopath aware that you are using the other's products.
  15. You might also want to check out this site, it has everything you need to know on puppy/dog training. www.dogstardaily.com You will be able to watch videos, listen to a radio program by the sites owner Dr Ian Dunbar. You can download his books Before & After You Get Your Puppy. Happy reading.
  16. My club doesn't have a roster. We instruct when ever we can & that is mostly every week. I went through an instructor's course back in '96 & in those days I instructed in one session & trained in the other. These days we have anything from 2 to 4 instructors for the beginner's class which sometimes includes ppl doing the Delta cert lV course. Beginners is in the 1st session & once completed we have transition then a more advanced class. Since having Tilba I don't instruct in these classes. The 2-3 yrs before that I instructed in both sessions as April was too old to participate. There's usually only 2 instructors, same 2 95% of the time. We really only have 4 permanent instructors. If we need holidays or a week off we just tell the others & juggle to suit.
  17. I agree, I'd be taking her to another vet. Is it hot to the touch? There is a story about a cat that was vaccinated in the back of the neck as is usual, & developed a bad reaction to one of the components to the vaccine which caused a cancer like lump. The cat died & the owners wrote the story to make other cat owners aware of the risk of vaccinating on the neck. It should be done on the thigh. I can't remember if this is only to do with one of the cat only vacs. But from my experience some vets won't change. I can remember with my 1st border collie many years ago, that she had a small lump develop over the vaccination site, the 1st one she'd had at the breeder's vet. My vet said it was because it was life vaccine. It was only very small. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=1+2143&aid=961
  18. Had to get with the spirit & take a Christmas photo of Tilba.
  19. To me 'yes' is the bridge the same way that a clicker is. It's easier for some to just say 'yes' than manipulate a clicker.
  20. Mr P Hill. In one of his routines he just wore shirt, shorts, base ball cap & sneakers.
  21. That's sad for you & him. I hate having to say goodbye to pets. But lets hope he gets a new life long home on the mainland & best of luck to him.
  22. He was given frontline about 3 weeks ago. I will feel him today to see if any ticks, but i have been told by another vet that my area (Rooty Hills, Sydney) is a low area for ticks. I have heard many ppl say that Frontline doesn't work any more. Was it the spray on or top spot? Also it needs to be applied every 2 weeks for tick control.
  23. Thanks AD for the info. Now all I have to do is teach Tilba to fetch a frisbee. I've always thought it looked like a lot of fun. Do you train the dogs not to twist mid air & injure their backs?
  24. April at 14yrs 3days old Tilba Tilba on her 1st Birthday 19.1.09 Sooty & Tilba playing
  25. They sure had a good time. It's great to see dogs having fun together.
