Agree totally. I have heard that if they're not dropped they go look for them. I would be furious as I'm sure you are. I'd be insisting on the above suggestion re cost.

I would much rather get a male done than a female. Our last male dog didn't even have stitches which surprised me. The insision was pressed together or would it have been glued? Anyway, Tilba was a nightmare to have done. The stitch line had a couple of creases in them & she wouldn't leave them alone, so had to wear the Eliz collar the whole time until the stitches dissolved. She came home on anti-biotics because of a pimply rash but no pain meds. I have heard this because if they have pain meds they think they are not sore & will run around all the more which is not good for their recovery. A couple of months later she had a blood spot in the middle of the incission line. I didn't know what it was & pulled it off & it blead again. About another 6 mths down the track & the incission looks fine.

Yes there are obedience trials (comps). I went to agility training with my 1st border collie, & due to her temperament & my inability to be able to remember the agility courses set, I never trialled her. I know, some of you are going to say all the equipment is numbered, but I still found it hard to remember/find where each number was as the ones making the courses liked to make them tricky.

Breeders Who Raise Puppies On Raw/barf/premium Dry
luvsdogs replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
I have bolded the parts of your pups diet that I personally think totally unnecessary for a canine. ;) and underlined the bit that has me worried Whole egg, not just the yolk, including the shell, raw meat on the bone offal including green tripe (and if you can't buy green tripe or can't stand the stuff, un-bold the vege and add a little bit. Mammals don't naturally consume milk after weaning - yoghurt, cheese, milk, whatever are all milk, and not the type of milk a dog is designed to drink either. With a very small puppy it's not necessarily harmful because IMO we wean pups earlier than they would "in the wild" but it's not essential either. Whatever suits your dog is fine, but if he's pooping out that much it's obvious proof that whatever is going in is not being digested so if you want him to poop less, feed him stuff he can digest I cringed when I saw this diet. Who told you to feed your puppy this way? The whole point of going raw is to avoid all the grains that are in most commercial dog food. As well as the benefits to the dog's teeth & the exercise they get from ripping & tearing raw meaty bones. The easiest way to feed raw is to follow Tom Lonsdales recommendations. If you want to have the hassle of doing all those veggie patties you follow Ian Billinhurst, he does do the patties but my dogs wouldn't touch them. I have all the books by both men & Lonsdales is the way I think dogs were fed b4 commercial food. Watch the video clips in this link, not real good quality but worth a look. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/tvVideo/video.php -
Breeders Who Raise Puppies On Raw/barf/premium Dry

My parents used to feed their dog back in the 50's on horse meat bought from the local produce store. I surpose he also got bones & scraps. I can't remember what our next 2 dogs ate but it certainly wasn't processed dog food. I dog I had as a child used to get Munchies as a treat which were little red balls of what I surpose was kibble like. I first heard of 'raw' in 99 when Ian Billinhurst came to my obedience club to do a talk on the subject & sell his books of which I bought the 2 available at the time & started feeding April the veggie mix I made myself & raw meaty bones. It certainly improved her teeth. She was an ithy dog for a few years until I discovered it was flea allergy & put her on Advantage. She lived to nearly 15. My present dog is an itchy dog but being lazy I still haven't switched her over to raw. She only gets the occasional bone. -
That's a good start lets hope he continues to improve, even when you move back into the bedroom.

Congratulations on your future new baby. It's usually suggested to introduce a new puppy on neutral territory, like a friends place, so George doesn't feel he has to guard his home territory. I would take things slowly, let them interact with each other & watch George for any sign of not wanting the puppy in his face. You want to protect her from any little accidents. Also be aware as George gets a little older he may change his attitude to other dogs, I believe this happens with staffys. It has happened to a club member of my obedience club who has 2 staffys. Her 1st was a female who was a very laid back dog until after she got her male staffy pup. About the same age gap as yours will be. I think she's ok with her younger brother but her attitude has changed to other dogs, even ones she's know for most of her life. It won't take them long to be best friends but I would still be cautious until the puppy has grown some & can stand up for herself. I have only ever introduced 2 puppies to 2 7 y/o dogs, the 1st didn't want anything to do with the pup for 4 days & then she became friends albeit a little roughly at times. The next time it was a little easier but Sooty was a bit more aggressive with Tilba than April was with Sooty. It's also to not ignore George, he is still your big baby & needs to still feel loved. Also take them out separately for walks & outings a couple of times a week so they don't become so attached to each other that they fret if one has to leave & the other remain home. Same goes for training. Also watch when you feed them, if George guards his food or tries to steal Milly's food. Don't let them play too much in the 1st few weeks as Milly needs her rest. Good luck & can't wait to see pics. I wouldn't let Milly to sleep on your bed as well because it could cause conflict with George.

Congratulations, stick with it.

The Ups And Downs Of Dog Training.

If you want to buy Control Unleashed I can PM you an Aussie site that sells it for $35. -
My vet always gives 3 puppy shots. I have also heard that if given at 6 weeks it's cancelled out by the dams antibodies so the new protocol is 1st shot at 8 weeks. Tilba had her 1st annual shot, with a 3 yr vaccine if that makes sense.

My previous pups to Tilba went to sleep in what I call the dog room, at our back door entry. With April I was awake all night waiting for her to cry, remembering pup we had as a child. Nothing, ever. Same thing with Sooty. Different with Tilba I put her in the same room in her crate. She was fine, not a noise for the 1st 3 or so weeks. Then the nightmare began. She would scratch at, yelp & whine. I was prepared to ignore it but my oh & son's all workers were not & each took a turn on different nights to go to her. It eventually stopped when I gave her a dog bed & didn't put her in the crate. I know they say to put the crate next to your bed, never have the pup in your bed, so they know they're not alone & you can hear them when they stir to go outside. I would not want a young pup weeing & pooing in my bed. I don't give a pup access to carpeted rooms until they are reliable in the house. You'll just have to be persistent & let him cry it out. He should eventually settle as long as you don't give in again.

First Agility Trial Of The Year
luvsdogs replied to Nicole...'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Looking forward to hearing how everyone went last night. -
My dogs/pups always go to bed officially when I do, anything from 11pm to 2 am but they sleep whenever they like.
-
I have a friend who minded a bitch while she whelped. She arrived about a week b4 she was due, had 4 puppies & she went back to her owners when the pups were between 4-5 w/o. I thought it a bit mean. I have no idea how old pups are when the dam weans them as I'm not a breeder.
-
I started reading this thread this morning with trepidation. I knew someone once who had a 4 y/o border collie & added a 1 y/o bc X to her family. Both females & desexed. They didn't hit it off & she enclosed her patio with pool fencing to separate them while at work. When she came home one day the fence was bent in places & there was blood all over the patio. The dogs had minor injuries but things never got any better & she had the younger dog put down. This was only one incident with the 2 dogs b4 she made that decision. I'm so glad to hear you're now only getting one pup. You can pay all your attention to him & have the joys of training & teaching him how to be the best dog for your family. I love puppies but they do get up to a lot of mischief. Find a good positive puppy pre school, find friends with friendly vaccinated dogs for you to socialise him with & join an obedience club to further his & your education.
-
Most puppy pre schools take puppies from 8-16 weeks old. They will all be in the same boat as far as vaccinations go which is why they say it's not a problem. I didn't get Tilba until she was nearly 12 w/o & she started pp at 12 weeks after she'd had her 1st 2 jabs. I still carried her everywhere until after she'd had her 3rd jab to be sure. I still took her lots of places though for continued socialisation.

A Lump Has Suddenly Appeared Under Zero's Skin
luvsdogs replied to ~*Shell*~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It sounds like a cyst but I would have thought they grow rather slowly. -
Tilba has a shiny coat & someone said to oh, 'you feed raw eggs don't you?' He asked how he knew & the stranger said, 'the shiny coat.' I have also heard about Livamol on here & how well it works.

It's never a good idea to get litter mates no matter what the sex. Lots of reasons in this thread. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=186867

Anyone Used Alpha Keri Oil In Dogs Bath?
luvsdogs replied to 4 Paws's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've just bathed Tilba for the 1st time in over a month. I found her skin to have quite a lot more dandruff than I have found previously. In the final rinse I used the Alpha Kerri oil. I put about 6 cm of water in the laundry tub & added about 10 mls of oil. I wasn't sure how much to use as stated you don't want to use too much. Will come back after a few days to let you know if she's still scratching or if there is any reduction in scratching. -
That was what I found in the beef packet. It looked like little bits of cut blonde hair. Am reluctant to give it to them. What flavour you had? I bought the chicken fl. to see if it was any different but haven't opened it yet. I have used the Nature's Gift tinned food for used as an additive to kibble. April used to be allergic to wheat so I started giving her the NG tins with raw chicken wings.

Puppy Wees Herself When Over Excited
luvsdogs replied to Snowball's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My 1st bc used to do it whenever I came home & at the vets. She eventually grew out of it. My present bc hasn't done it at all. I have heard that you should discourage over excitement when you come home to try & prevent it, something I didn't do with 1st bc. With Tilba I wait until she sits b4 I pat her when arriving home. -
You can teach things like shake hands which leads to high 5 & wave. Have 3 empty tins or flower pots & put a piece of food under one, shuffle around & get dog to find, something like the walnut shell game. Go to an op shop or garage sale & get a toy spinning top &/or childs piano & teach touch.
