  1. So how many going? I'm going to Budgewoi on 14th home to Sydney on 15th so could call in on the way home if I know for sure that anyone will be there.
  2. My border collie Tilba has eaten numerous non food items in the 2 years I've had her. At about 6 mths old she ate a bread n butter plate sized hole in her flannelette bedding. Afterwards she ate copious amounts of grass, I never thought she'd stop. When she finally threw up I collected it & put it in an old strainer & washed the contents, then put the bits I found together like a jigsaw puzzle to make sure most of it had come up, which it had. Since then she's had times when she's eaten other things & I've spent more time putting them together. The worst she's eaten that I've been worried about has been cooked chicken bones, including last night where she stole a couple of chicken wings from under the grill. The time b4 she was reverse sneezing after eating the bones but the vet said she still should be ok, which she was, but I never cease to worry. I'm sure Ruby will be ok.
  3. to Ahsoka. Great photos as usual. I have mainly been on the bc thread, when did you get your new puppy Nik? She's adorable.
  4. No replies? Does anyone have any aged dog on Proban & how has it affected it, if at all? My friend has asked her vet what to use but would like to hear from owners with dogs using Proban or other products that work.
  5. I haven't used it, but my son's dog has a glucosomine/condroitin tablet. When 1st put on they have a double dose for the 1st month or 2 & then a single dose as a maintenance dose from then on.
  6. Give him exercise. My previous border collie built up a lot of muscle in her hips & thighs when we added another dog to the family when she was 7.5 years old, by them playing tug a lot of the time. I was amazed with the difference in her.
  7. My friend has a 13 y/o shih tzu that recently had a paralysis. Luckily he came out of it with the anti-venom but if he gets another one may not be so lucky. She was thinking of putting him on proban tablets as she'd heard that they are the best thing to help prevent ticks. He's previously been on tick collars. She has heard that they may slow an older dog down. Who here has an older dog on proban tablets & how do they affect it? Can they be used with other preventives? Your replies will be much appreciated.
  8. Lure reward, clicker training. His nose follows the treats to perform the actions, eventually adding verbal cues so you don't always need to use treats, but still use them occasionally to keep his interest. http://www.dogstardaily.com/blogs/tips-tra...ecial-needs-dog
  9. I think you should try ignoring him totally while he does this, which is not eye contact, no touching & do not speak to him, it could all be attention in his mind.
  10. You don't have to give the treat by hand, you can throw it on the floor. http://www.clickertraining.tv/product.html?item=FREE-38 You can also hand feed dog his meal & if he snatches say 'ouch' & he doesn't get fed. Put the food away for a few seconds then bring it back, eventually you don't accept his teeth on your skin. Then go back to clicker training. Or you could use clicker training for soft mouth but your timing would have to be spot on.
  11. After reading all the posts from here & US forums I would never use the injection, to me it's way tooooo risky. In the US they had the 6 mth injection & after many deaths it was banned. Here in Aus it's a 12 mth injection & I think twice as strong, so if anything goes wrong your stuck with the massive dose for the next year.
  12. When oh & I both worked full time only had one outside dog. Now I'm at home most of the time & have 2 dogs.
  13. Nature's Gift kibble is supposed to be natural, for a supermarket brand it doesn't have all the nasties of the cheap stuff.
  14. I would only use positive training on your dog. You will find lots of info & video clips on this site that may help you. www.dogstardaily.com
  15. I will certainly be watching, thanks for the info Jo. So sorry to hear of Jack's passing, that is so sad.
  16. There are a few ways to go, like you are doing, as the chief instructor at my club says, you won't get to the post office before it closes. Another way is to take a few steps backwards before she hits the end of the lead, idea being she will figure if she wants to go forward she won't pull. If she's pulling you to something or someone you don't want her to get to, turn around & walk briskley in the opposite direction, don't yank on the collar, just start moving. I've been doing the stop/start method with my dog for 2 years, every so often I have to remind her not to pull, but I don't get dragged down the street. Another method by kikopup.
  17. She doesn't have to heel all the time while out walking. As long as she's walking on a loose lead, that's all you want. Put only a few steps of heel into your walk now & again, a walk should be enjoyable for her & not all presision heeling. For loose lead walking us a command such as 'let's go'.
  18. Definitely NO begging, jumping, & very, very little weaving & crawling before at the very least 12 months old. You will say but she does them, that's ok on their own in play. But making them do them is damaging to growing joints & backs before the growth plates close. The same goes for great long walks.
  19. Here in lies your problem. Like corvus said you have to go back to basics. Don't let her have access to the whole house until the problem is solved, as you would with a new puppy. Take her outside after eating/drinking, sleeping, playing & wait with her until she goes, reward with treats & praise & put it on cue. It's your body language that has her running outside, not the fact that she 'knows' she's done wrong. I would not be letting her roam free in the house at night, use a crate if you can't contain her in the laundry or bathroom or some other small room with easy to clean floors.
  20. All you needed to know about feeding raw http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html
  21. I was in a lot of pain, and could feel the inflammation in my hips, after having a regular brisk walk - so I was also limiting the amount of walking I was doing. But within a week I was much more comfortable; and it took three weeks before I was pain-free. Again, I was also limiting my walking - but have done three walks in the past seven days, and yesterday's very brisk walk has left me conscious of my hips, but without twinges or pain. I should add, I am also taking D-glucosamine hydrochloride/hydrosulphate as a natural anti-inflammatory and cartilige-repair supplement. This compound is revommended for sufferers of inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis, asthma, lupus, sinus, and arthritis. I used to take ester C many years ago all the time to prevent colds & it worked because each time I fell pregnant & couldn't bare to take them I'd get a cold. I never thought of taking them for arthritis. I only occassionally take them now if I feel a sore throat coming on. What is the brand name of the other tabs you take? For dogs I would use the powdered form, it's cheaper & easier to use. I used to also use this for my dogs when I used to make up the vegie mix from the Billinhurst diet.
  22. There are also implants that last for 6 or 12 mths to prevent mating.
  23. I used to have a very reactive dog that didn't like most dogs. Up until I read this article by Suzanne Clothier I used to think it was her fault. http://www.nesr.info/images-english-shephe...s-to-say-hi.pdf It's quite long but well worth the read.
  24. I would teach him to not pull on lead by only moving forward while the lead is loose, & stop when it's tight. Reward him for the loose lead. If you can't manage that because of his size & strength I would try using an easy walking harness. When he pulls it turns him towards you, praise & reward. I don't let my dog pull me. She's allowed to sniff around as long as she's not pulling. She does walk ahead of me most of the time & I just have to remind her if she goes too far. My previous dog used to lunge at dogs running around at obedience & agility training & I have a torn shoulder because of it.
  25. I've never heard of professional obedience before. The Northern Subs dtc is at St Ives showground, http://www.nsdogtraining.org.au/homepg.html
