  1. I went to the APDT conference a couple of months ago & one of the speakers said much the same thing. I've been using it to teach leg weaves & didn't realise it was so versatile.
  2. I agree with what the others have said. A veterinary behaviourist may also be an option. I know of a good one in Melbourne but that doesn't help your friend in SA.

    Adolescence

Have a listen to this radio broadcast of Dr Ian Dunbar etc talking about adolescent mayhem. http://dogstardaily.com/radio/213-adolescent-mayhem
  4. This is what I was thinking. My border collie can be the same way with some things but she will still move on with encouragement & food.
  5. Socialise, socialise, socialise with caution as already mentioned. You want a dog you can take anywhere with you & not one that has to be left at home due to unwanted behaviour. A good dog trainer - http://www.getsmartdogs.com.au/Classes.html
  6. The only times my dog growls is when she's playing tug with my son's dog. The same thing with the previous dogs. You never want to stop a dog growling as it's a warning that they aren't happy, not in a play sence.
  7. It's easy, just take her outside after eating, drinking, waking up, playing & every hour or 2 at other times. Wait until you see her go, praise & treat., Put it on cue, makes it easier in the long run. Ditch the puppy pads, check the crate isn't too big. How big is she? a bigger breed wouldn't need to go out more than once a night, I woudn't give her the run of the house until she's reliable, watch her like a hawk & if you can't crate or put her in your bathroom or a room with an easy clean floor.
  8. Is it big enough for him or has he grown out of it?
  9. Excellent website Be sure to download the FREE books "Before You Get Your Puppy" and "After You Get Your Puppy" Anything by Dr Ian Dunbar is brilliant IMO Ditto!!! Also watch the videos by kikopup on youtube. Excellent trainer. http://www.youtube.com/user/kikopup#p/a/F0...C/1/PRT6r6d79OU
  10. I would have hated to be in that situation. You would be at fault for not having him on lead in a public place. This is on my council's website re dog attacks. http://www.parracity.nsw.gov.au/residents/...hip/dog_attacks
  11. As I was reading this thread I was thinking at any stage had she been checked out by a vet for any physiological problems as she had been kicked in the head quite severely a few times?
  12. Just recieved my Dec Dogs NSW journal. Congratulations Janba on Cole's passes on the Oct long weekend.
  13. I have food aggressive dogs here, the older dog who was 7.5 yrs when I got Tilba. Sooty, now 10 yrs, has taught Tilba to be the same way, another animal only has to go to Sooty's empty dish to sometimes get a snap. they are fed separately but Tilba will chase the cat away when I'm getting her dinner ready so I have to make sure she's not there. As to leaving them alone in the yard, I don't do this until the pup has grown to a comparable size to the older dog & is used to the yard.
  14. Try this video, it may help or there may be others, kikopup is an excellent trainer & has many vids on youtube.
  15. When I took Tilba to puppy school over 2 1/2 yrs ago they only let 2-3 puppies free at the one time for a minute or two & gradually changed them around on the 3rd & 4th nights.
  16. Did you get my reply to your PM? When I went to my messages I couldn't find it.
  17. How come we should wait until he is matured? I know a few people when they got their pups at 8 weeks they were already desexed, and they seem fine. Correct me if I am wrong, but I read if you don't desex them early enough they will still hump and spray even after being desexed? Is there anyone who had their pup desexed younger then mature age? After reading this article I would not take the chance of doing early s/n. In the past all our dogs were done at 6 mths which used to be the norm until the designer revolution. http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html
  18. Tilba is my 1st crate dog. She was used to it b4 getting her & was no bother on the 6.5 hour drive home from the breeder, she was almost 12 weeks. The 1st week or so she was happy to sleep in the crate at night. Then the fun started. I followed all the usual things, ignoring, only letting out when quiet, putting on the TV or lound music etc but the men in my life all took turns at going to her to tell her to shut up. She whined, barked , scratched at the crate door & rocked it making even more noise. In the end I let her sleep on my previous dog's bed outside the crate, locked in the entry foyer where our 2 dogs still sleep today. No problems from that night on.
  19. You can join Karen Pryor's site at http://www.clickertraining.com/ there's tons of stuff there as well. I also recommend kikopup on Youtube. And it's never too late to start, I tried it with April when she was about 8 & it didn't take her long to get the hang of it.

  21. Have you tried setting up a video camera all day to see if she is actually barking the whole time? When your about to leave, if she's fed kibble, scatter it around the back yard or rooms shes in inside & try not to let her see you leave. Also as someone suggested practice coming & going in increasing lengths of time & reward for quiet when you return. I don't think its legal these days to de-bark & the few dogs I've heard that have been de-barked still make a horrible noise.
  22. I haven't used 4 Legs since April was alive but from memory they weren't that easy to use as treats as they would crumble if I tried to cut them into smaller bits. At my dog club we use Chunkers. I find the ones without vegie/cheese the best. I can get 10 - 20 treats out of one meatball by breaking off with my fingernail. Tilba loves them. Have you thought of getting a de-hydrator & making your own treats using thin slices of raw meat & fruits? I've thought of getting one but as yet haven't got around to it. A club member has one & has 'recipees' that she uses in the de-hydrator.
  23. I've found the Troy repellant cream to be the best, although inconvienient to apply to large areas. When April was alive the flys really went to town on her ears. I bought a cream antiseptic in a dark blue tube, sorry can't remember the name, only drawback it was a vivid yellow. Not a good look & I'm not sure it worked that well.
