I saw this movie many years ago & didn't know it's name. I've told people about it & wish I could see it again. Some others are Silver Wolf, Hachi, Miracle Dogs, You've Got Mail, & yet to see Red Dog.

Me too & some of the latest Lassie. I have lots of dog movie favourites. Turner & Hooch, Beethoven 1,2,3,4, K9 1,2,3, Eight Below, Snow Dogs, Hotel for Dogs, Down & Out in Beverly Hills, Benji original & newer version, Bingo, As Good as it Gets, The Lake House, Zeus & Roxanne - the friendship between a dog & a dolphin.

I don't think they would be a problem in June, I take my dogs to Dogs NSW Erskine Park & ticks aren't a problem in winter. Not sure about the Equestrian Centre? To be on the safe side you could use Advantix a day or 2 before you go, but be careful if you have cats as it's poisonous to cats.

Vomit Inducing Drug For The House
luvsdogs replied to jacqui835's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There's no set dose for how many grapes they need to be negatively affected - I just didn't want to take the chance - didn't seem worth the stress. I know grapes are supposed to be dangerous to dogs but long before I ever heard this, my first BC used to eat all fruit including the grapes and passionfruit we had growing in the yard. The grapes were sour wine grapes that we never used and the dog would eat the entire crop and then chew the vine back each season. Never did him any harm at all. Years back I didn't know about grapes either & my 1st bc & our cross bred dog always helped themselves to the grapes that our lorikeet dropped. I used to even throw them a few on my way to the bird cage. Since having my 2nd bc I have used HP quite a few times for the things she's eaten. Works every time but she's now savvy to it when she sees the syringe & manages to spit most of it out. -
It would be wonderful to have a vaccine. I've been saying for years why can't they come up with something to spray the yard for paralysis ticks, but I would guess it would be too strong for our pets to be safe from.

Tilba did the same thing about a month after we got her. She's the 1st dog I'd used a crate with. From 12 weeks old when we got her she was ok in the crate, then at 3 months or so the whining, scratching at the crate became unbearable. I ignored her but oh & sons couldn't as they had to work & all had a go at going to her, not what I wanted. Eventually I let her sleep on the dog bed where my previous border collie used to sleep & never had a problem with her sleeping habits after that.

Yea... his just putting on weight so quickly.... about 1kg a week...... so I think ill cut out lunch....not only is it a real pain for me to come home every lunch break to feed him but he seems to be fine with just breaky and dinner..... he gets big bones throught the day so I guess that will do till dinner.. (which it has been) It's usually 3 times a day up until 6 mths, twice a day until 1 yr then daily. The topic came up at a recent conference I went to & the speaker said that in the wild dogs will eat 3 times a day, if they can get it, & she feeds her dogs twice a day. You also have to grow a large breed puppy slowly to protect growing bones & joints. I would also think that as an adult to still feed twice a day so he's not getting all his calories in one hit. Does that age me or what?

Dennis to go with Wilson, Mr Wilson that is.

Use by & best before are 2 different things. For us anyway. I have eaten both past the date, a few days for used by & a week or so past best before. I would feed it as long as the kibble doesn't smell off or have a fine dusting of mould on it. It has been stored mostly through the winter, have you had many hot days while it was in the shed? It's only a month past the best before date, so should be fine.

Do You Still Vaccinate An Old Dog?
luvsdogs replied to Mum to Emma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
April my 1st border collie, sig pic, was vaccinated annually until I went to a workshop on homeopathic veterinary. The speaker at that time thought that vaccines probably lasted 7 years but hadn't been proven, but definitely 3/4 years. April wasn't vaccinated since then especially when 2 friends had their dogs die after their vaccinations at 9 yrs old. Our other dog Sooty was last done just before getting Tilba 3.5 yrs ago. Getting a new pup I wanted to make sure. She was 7.5 yrs at the time. Getting a new pup a couple of months ago I didn't bother about Sooty getting vaccinated, she's now 11 yrs & Tilba is on tri-annual vac. -
I thought clubs like that were on the way out, obviously not. Even when my club used to be traditional we were encouraged to praise (pat, pat, goood dog) our dogs when they did the right thing but not with food or toys.
-
Many years ago when I was training my 1st border collie the 'traditional' way she would move if I was looking at her in a stay & as you I was told to look over her head or to the side. She was more comfortable with this. My club changed over to positive, lure - reward training in 2000 which teaches 'look/watch' & have the dog to look into our eyes, not to stare at them but to look at them with smiley eyes. They soon get used to this with us, after all we are their care givers & they should feel comfortable with us looking into their eyes, not to say that staring is still not a threat from strangers & dogs.

Training Confusion
luvsdogs replied to Jordan Windebank's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Make a list of all the commands(the words you'll use) you want him to learn, with the hand signals to go with them. Stick the list on your fridge so the whole family can refer to it. This way you won't confuse the dog. -
Today Tonight did a follow up story on a couple of dogs that were affected. They both have muscle wastage but otherwise seem to be ok. As for us it said to make sure you wash all salad items thoroughly. Could be a bit of a worry eating out.

An excellent book to get, if you have or are about to get a puppy is The Focused Puppy, from Clean Run The Focused Puppy It has been on Free Postage for over a year now, but unfortunately not any more, but it is still an excellent book & a "must have" The focused puppy is also available from here which is based in Sydney. http://www.wagschoolbooks.com.au/shop/books/puppies.html?p=2 I was going to buy it at the APDT conference but bought Dr Sophia Yin's book Perfect Puppy in 7 Days instead (out of stock atm)as she's one of next years speakers.

I read that article many years ago when I still had April. She used to snap & lunge at some dogs. I used to think it was all her fault, until reading the article & could see that it wasn't always her fault. Great article.

I would not be walking a 12 w/o puppy 3 1/2 hours a day, VERY BAD for those young growing bones & joints especially in a large breed puppy. As stated much more beneficial to exercise the brain. I recently went to a 4 day conference on dog training & 1 of the speakers said that just plain walking does nothing to exercise the dog, much better to take a casual stroll & let it sniff around (read it's newspaper) & learn what's going on in it's world. My puppy also has zoomy time & hares around the backyard like a lunatic much to the disgust of the older dogs.

It's been nearly 2 weeks since you posted Lady Canda. How have things been progressing? I now have a Japanese Spitz puppy, 1st small dog I've had since a childhood. I had more success with the bigger puppies I've had over the years but at 4 mths he mostly barks to be let out now to toilet. Having him sleep in a crate at night has also made a huge difference as before he slept in a small room with his bed & 1/2 the time I got up to a wet floor if I didn't get to him quick enough & again 9 out of 10 on paper towel. I can't remember where I saw it but someone gave a link to a dog breeder or trainer in the US I think that always keeps his new pups in a puppy pen. He says it goes a long way to train the pups easily. Does anyone know who I'm referring to?

I tried taping one of my border collie's ears because I prefer them to be semi-erect & she had one good ear & the other stood erect. I wasn't really religious about it or shown how to do it. I just used double sided tape which either didn't stick properly because of all the hair or if it did my sons would take it off. Three & a half years on she will sometimes have it slightly bent over but it doesn't quite match the other ear & that's ok, because at least it does lean forward a little most of the time. Glad to hear you are happy to leave it alone, as I've seen some sorry looking pups that have had their ears taped & from what I've heard it doesn't always work. She's very cute as she is & in a little while you'll probably be back with pics of her ears back the way they were .

I've always taken pups & kittens to the vets for a wellness check within 3 days of acquiring them.

hahaha pretty much Congratulations on your little surprise bub. I only had 3 sons, all adults now. When they were young & constantly fighting I used to tell people that if I had my life over again I wouldn't have kids, I'd have puppies, breed. emery's comment reminded me of my sister in law, 7 mths pregnant, racing around after a new maltese pup when it had wee'd on the carpet, way back in 1977, only her 2nd baby att.

Poor Daisy, looks so miserable. Glad she's ok.

[quoteMason_GibbsPosted 19 October 2011 - 10:09 AM I still think you need to be quite an outgoing person to do dwd i could never do that with heaps if people watching I too am a shy person, very, very unfit with no co-ordination but am having a go at DWD. I love to watch the other dogs & handlers do their routines & hope to one day compete. It's great fun for the dogs to do their tricks & the more you do the easier it becomes. I read a long, long time ago somewhere that heeling, recalls & all those position changes etc that are done in obedience are also tricks. As far as other ppl watching, you are so focused on what your dog is doing that you soon forget the audience in a workshop situation that is, as I haven't trialed yet as I've said.
-
I've haven't competed in dog sports as yet but used to take my 1st border collie April to obedience 4 times a week & agility once a week. I take my present bc to herding now & again, obedience once a week & dwd workshops. This isn't as time consuming as it was with April. I now have a new Japanese Spitz pup, not sure what I'll be doing with him yet apart from taking him to obedience once a week. Would certainly rather be doing things with the dogs than boring housework.

Well done kallistar. You are now way ahead of me with my routine. Would be great if you could find out if someone videoed it for you. The Sydney comps used to be videoed & it was great to relive all the action. Then there were complaints from some competitors not wanting to be done, so an authority form was to be signed. It ended up being jinxed as the video camera died. Don't practice since getting the pup & the next comp is fast approaching in Nov. It doesn't help that Tilba is a reluctant participant most of the time.
