  1. My almost 7.5 month old male Japanese Spitz is starting to mark his territory. He has lifted his leg for a few months now but in the last week or so is doing it with a purpose. I haven't had a male dog since 1993 who was mostly an outside dog & didn't attempt to mark when inside. How do I go about teaching this little he man that it's not allowed inside?
  2. When I bought my 1st border collie from a breeder friend she still had her dew claws. He told me he would remove them b4 picking her up but forgot. I had them removed when she was desexed. They were a bit messy for a few days but healed up ok. There were a couple of mini long haired dachshunds at an obedience club I used to go to with their dew claws attached. They looked very floppy & close to the ground. If they were my dogs I would have had them removed. It always worried me that the would get torn.
  3. I've had a look at a few Audacity sites & I don't know which one to use. I have windows 7 & apparently need beta, but how do I go from there?
  4. When do entries open?? I think I will jump in for both depending on how Abby picks up a third position for HTM. Entries are now open & close on March 16.
  5. Try this from Tom Lonsdale's site. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/diet/exp-diet-guide.pdf
  6. A friend of mine went the 3 days & enjoyed it. She can understand what you meant about the 1st day but found the 2nd & 3rd days better.
  7. We use Chunkers at my obedience club & the dogs love them. They are in the pet section of the fridge at Woolies & Coles. Like the others said it was only the 1st day. Sooty my son's 11 y/o dog spent her 1st puppy school class under our chairs. The next week she ventured out to play with the other 2 pups.
  8. How old is she now? & where did you get her from?
  9. A couple of years ago my oh's aunt told us her latest grandchild was Scout. New puppy I asked? no, human.
  10. I decided to let Tilba have 1 heat after reading this article before getting her. http://www.alabamacaninecoalition.org/earlyspayconsiderations.pdf And then this after getting her. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=230510 Before getting my JS puppy I wouldn't get one from a breeder with a desexing contract. Unfortunately both his testicles are retained & he will have to be done much earlier than I wanted. If I were you I would wait until he is 12 to 18 mths old especially as he's a large breed.
  11. I've only ever missed a few times. This will be the 1st time to my knowledge, didn't go last time, that it's only on for 2 days. Back in the old Moore Park days it used to be on for 4 days. This is also the 1st time I'll be taking my dog, we will be doing the DWD demo.
  12. When my son found my cat as a tiny dumped baby about 6/7 yrs ago I did a lot of research on kitty litters & after reading that the clay clumping ones set like concrete when they come in contact with liquid & if swallowed are very dangerous I wouldn't use them. I then tried the crystals & hated them. After many months I discovered the natural one & won't use anything else. Glad to hear Misty is now ok & I hope Coco will be also.
  13. From my understanding the protocol for puppy vacs is the 1st one at 8 weeks old then 12 - 16 weeks old. The 6 week vac is thought to be affected by the mum's antibodies. Look up Jean Dodds, she's done a lot of work on vaccinations. http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/DODDS-CHG-VACC-PROTOCOLS.HTM Disregard the rabies vaccinations.
  14. I used to recommend Advantage because when it 1st came out, I put it on my FAD border collie & she never had a flea again. As of the last 4 years & my present border & new Japanese Spitz & our mixed breed dog that doesn't seem to be bothered with fleas I have applied Advantage to all the dogs & the 2 younger dogs are still scratching & have fleas. Yesterday my cousin says he uses Comfortis on his dog & he hasn't had a flea problem. When I 1st heard about Comfortis a couple of years ago I had heard it can be dangerous for some dogs so was reluctant to use it. Those who use it, does it really work? & have your dogs had a problem with it or have you heard what the problem is with it?
  15. You need to take her out a lot more than just after waking & eating. There's also after playing & every hour in between. When she's going outside where you want her to give lots of praise & some treats. Also give it a name as she's going. I use get busy, others use hurry up, go toilet etc. It only took my son's mixed breed dog 9 weeks to be trained but my border collie was a lot longer & so is my 6.5 m/o JS. I also now use a crate at night because I was sick of waking up to puddles on the floor where he sleeps. He now waits until he's let out to go.
  16. Yep cute alright, but you haven't seen hilarious zoomies unless you've seen Japanese Spitz puppy zoomies.
  17. I can't remember what my dog was on if I ever did, the vet said it was hormones. The main thing that made my 12 y/o border collie incontinent was wheat. Even on the tablets if I gave her ordinary kibble she'd wet. Once I made sure she never had any wheat products, kibble, bread, biscuits she was ok. The vet said it was an unusual cause for it.
  18. You can make your own long line out of cotton covered cord, thicker than that used on curtains & venetian blinds. Leave one end as is so your puppy doesn't get caught on anything & either tie the other end to a spare collar or the trojan clip off an old lead or buy one. I find you have to watch them because they tend to get their legs tangled at times. ETA: You can teach your puppy to come to a whistle. Start the same way you charge a clicker by blowing the whistle, softly at 1st to judge puppies reaction then treat. Repeat & repeat & repeat. Once puppy has the hang of the game you can blow the whistle when he's in the same room as you & see if he comes running & treat. Again repeat etc. You always want to give a treat when you blow the whistle.
  19. My border collie did the same thing re thrashing, scratching, screaming in the crate at night after the 1st week we'd had her. I tried all the usual things but the family of workers wouldn't ignore her after a while which was what I was prepared to do. I finally gave up the idea of her sleeping in the crate & gave her free access in her room & she slept well from then on, on my previous border's bed. She still uses the crate in the car & if I have the door open she will get in at other times. My new pup I used to let sleep in a box in the same room but due to toileting problems he now sleeps in the crate & is fine with this arrangement.
  20. The 1st border collie I ever met I disliked, in fact my oh's whole family disliked him except his owner, oh's cousin. Now I love them to bits, in my mind they are the best breed of dog ever. Not to say that I don't like other breeds. I now have a small white fluffy & love him to bits too. There are many breeds I would never have especially if they are short coated as I prefer coated breeds. My son's 11 y/o short coated mixed breed dog is the funniest, easiest dog to live with over the years although I wouldn't have picked her myself.
  21. Have had word that the Feb comp has been postponed to Sat March 31, so plenty of time to practice.
  22. There's a couple of mature/choc lab pups for sale in NSW on dol, I'd steer my friend that way.
  23. My 1st border collie was $200 from a friend reg breeder, I think he was selling the others in the litter for $300 or $400 can't remember now. My current bc was $850 in 2008 now I believe they are $1000 - $1200. Didn't realise at the time that my 1st bc was on MR until I got the papers for present LR bc.
