My first pure bred dog was left out in the yard when I went out. I was worried that she would be stollen so I put a padlock on out side gate whenever there was no one home. I didn't work so only shopping or outings. After she was grown & used to the place I didn't bother. She wasn't crate trained at all & as far as I know only show people used crates, the general pet dog owner didn't. It wasn't until I got my 2nd border collie 15 yrs later that I used a crate. She was already used to them & it was a 6.5 hour drive home from the breeders & she slept all the way. I used to put her in it to sleep at night for a few weeks but she started making a fuss & disturbing the workers in the family so I eventually let her sleep in my previous BC's old bed. She still loves her crate but I only use it in the car & when we go to training. My new 8.5 m/o pup also got used to his crate with not problems, I didn't have to do anything special. I let him sleep in an open box in his room but due to toileting problems I put him in the crate at night until a couple of weeks ago when he was desexed & had to wear an Elizabethan collar so he has been sleeping on his soft bed in a pen. You're going to have a big dog so I'd get him used to being in the yard in the daytime & only use the crate at night, after all dogs did that for decades before crates. The general rule is to put tasty food in the front of the crate & let the pup investigate, then gradually move the bowl further to the back. When pup goes in, don't lock him in. Do this for a time & then close the door for a few seconds, then open only if pup not performing. Gradually increase the time pup is locked in crate until he's happy to spend time in it. He will eventually grow to love his crate & they are handy for a number of reasons.

Wasn't this thread put up before? it sounds very familiar. Has your friends whole property been fenced? If so I would also put up a house fence, which a lot of people do have, & high enough that their dog can't jump over. I wouldn't allow my dog to wander around 10 acres unaccompanied.

My 1st border collie used to do it whenever I came home & when she went to the vets. She eventually grew out of it.

I had my border collie spayed 4 mths after her season. When I 1st got her I told my vet that I wanted to wait until she had had a season before desexing & she agreed with me saying that to have one season was a good idea to help prevent vaginitis. On another forum it was recommended to wait a couple of months after for things to go back to normal & prevent haemorage.sp.

Years ago 6 mths was the time to desex animals & at that time they used to say that they couldn't be done before that time because their insides were just too small. Then came irresponsible people who bought their dogs from pounds as puppies & didn't take them back at 6 mths to be done. Then they started desexing at approx 7 weeks which to me is way too young especially reading the information overload that you mention. I left my border collie until 14 mths to be spayed after she had her season at 10 mths. I've just had my 8 mth old Japanese Spitz male spayed only because he had retained testicles, otherwise I would have waited until he was a year old. With a large breed dog I would wait until maturity.

As I booked into the workshop on Sunday I was wondering if it had been cancelled due to the flooding on Luddenham Rd on Thursday. Dogs NSW has posted this info: Dogs NSW Grounds CLOSED until Monday 12th March 2012 Dogs NSW members are reminded that although the office is open today 9th March 2012 as Luddenham Road is now open, the grounds will remain closed until Monday due to flooding, however the scheduled DANCING WITH DOGS will still be held this Sunday 11th March 2012 in the Amenities building.

Are you going to the workshop on Sunday 11 Jumabaar? I haven't done anything with Tilba since the Expo. I've downloaded Audacity but have no idea how to use it.

I prefer a long coated dog to a short coated. My son's mixed breed, short coated dog sheds every time you pat her. With long coated dogs what falls out forms tumble weeds, much easier to pick up. Except when molting my border collie & Japanese Spitz only need brushing about once a week. Some of the small breeds do bark a bit but need training to prevent it from being a problem. My son's dog is a digger, the border collies I've had dug as puppies or after lots of rain.

My obedience club uses & recommends front attaching harnesses. Can't think off hand what brands they are. We have 2 types.

Christine rang me & we chatted for 34 minutes. Plan of attack - see my vet tomorrow, Christine knows her & said to pass on her regards, - get my vet's opinion on what needs doing & see if she thinks he needs to see Christine & if not for my own piece of mind... - go see Christine anyway for a 2nd opinion. My vet feels quite confident that the lateral incisor needs removing. It will be taken out on Monday when he will also get desexed, retained testicles, sooner than I had planned when I first got him. Christine gave her well wishes for the procedure & said to watch how his bite goes once the tooth is removed & frees up the canine that's hitting against the incisor. Positive vibes please for a positive outcome. Oh's not fussed on spending too much on pets nor is my son who talked me into getting Panda in the 1st place he says it's not bothering him so leave well enough alone. Not my feelings as Panda doesn't like you to touch his mouth.

Grass Eating - Are They Sick?

Tilba will eat & eat & eat grass quite frantically when I think she's feeling sick. The 1st time she did it as a pup she ate for over an hour & then brought up the hole she'd eaten out of an old pillow case I had in her bed. -

My 7.5 month old Japanese Spitz pup's adult teeth have grown in with a reverse scissor bite ie his front bottom incisors are over the top of the upper incisors. Also his right lower canine is hitting behind his upper incisor. I feel he will have to have this tooth out. On the left side the canines have fitted into the spaces. Has anyone had to have their young dog's teeth removed because of a similar problem? At 1st I thought he'd have his 2 lower canines removed to prevent damage to the upper gum but after reading Dr Christine Hawke's booklet - Common Dental Problems for Competition Dogs, puppy problems., I am reluctant to have this done as it says that the lower canines form 70% of the front of the jaw & could cause fracture of the jaw if removed & I don't want that to happen. Has anyone taken their dogs to Dr Hawke & how expensive is it? I know what the initial consult & further visits cost which is about triple a regular vet visit before even paying for any treatment. We have an appointment with my vet on Thursday to see what she recommends but I'd like to hear others opinions & experiences are first.

I too found it a long way from the dog stalls. I think they should have had an entrance to the Exhibition building at the top near the breed stalls. A lot of people did come up to see the dog breeds on both days. It was a hard slog if you wanted to see different talks/demos in each area throughout the day. I didn't go last time but other years they always had it in the building directly behind the dog stalls.

Zero is pretty cute, but than he is a husky. :D What sort of pets? It's a while since I filled in the forms for The Expo, but I always thought that it was a definite NO. There were lab pups being sold, i asked if they came with papers and the lady directed me to some man who said no.... :S, I thought it was sus. Were they from Lab rescue? They also had kittens for sale at the cat show, but I think that's pretty usual because I've seen for sale signs up at the Royal Easter Show.

I try to avoid foods with corn, wheat & beet pulp all sources of allergy from what I've researched. As soon as I saw corn as the 2nd ingredient, no way would I buy it.

I'll be sure to post in their when I get my pup  Look forward to seeing your new pup. Love Border puppies. ;)

My dogs love nylabones but hard to get from some sources. I was told that the price had been raised so much that they were no longer going to stock them. I get the nylon ones from the supermarket, they love them just as much. But my puppy prefers them after the big dogs have chewed them for a while. Raw meaty bones are great as a meal but I wouldn't get the weight bearing hard bones as they can break a tooth on them. ETA What breed of puppy are you getting?

Tilba is the 1st dog I've used a crate with. Best thing ever. She doesn't use it all the time, just in the car & when away from home. My JS puppy sleeps in his when inside, the car & away from home. I didn't need them with previous dogs, back then they weren't available as much as they are today.

I bath my 2 dogs in the laundry tub to save my back. The 1st time or 2 they tried to jump out & struggle so I had a collar on them to prevent this, the whole time telling them if was alright in a soothing voice. They are both coated breeds & take quite a bit of time to get them wet through & rinse off. I would think a staffy would be a lot easier to wet this & rinse.

Watch this old video with Ray Martin & Tom Lonsdale. Almost half way through TL will explain this question. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/tvVideo/raymartin/raymartin.html
