My lots favourite is a nylon bone. Tilba & Panda when they were 1st brought home loved the pre-used ones. Panda at 9 mths still prefers them to be started by the older dogs. :D

There are heaps of Dobe breeders sending to NZ to whelp, just have a look at the puppy pages on dol. I have no idea what you have to pay for these puppies, but it annoys me that you have to compete against these dogs and as far as I know the standard hasn't been amended to include the standards for an undocked tail. They don't allow dobes with cropped ears to compete in the ring so I don't get why the imported dogs with docked tails are allowed to. Yes I have major sour grapes with this  I first found out about this on a DOL thread last year when the OP was concerned about the wound on the pup's tail not healing after quite some time.
-
I would think so. There are still plenty of dogs around who were docked prior to the ban. The ones I saw last year were in the junior & intermediate classes so definitely after the NSW ban.

At least one doberman breeder that I know of was sending their bitches to WA to whelp & pup's tails docked. We had one come to my obedience club a few years ago & then I saw one at my vets. They had both been whelped in WA. Now that it's illegal Aust wide I've heard that some breeders are now sending their bitches to New Zealand. It will be interesting to see if any dogs entered at the Sydney Royal have docked tails. Last year I saw Dobermans, Weis, & Rotties with docked tails.

I finally bought the Troy plaque off at my local pet warehouse. I'm anxious to start using it on my JS pup's food but atm he is on antibiotics for a torn off toe nail. Would the antibiotics destroy the action to the P/O.

My 1st Border Collie used to get crusty sores from flea allergy & the vet prescribed an iodine solution that I had to dilute 10parts water to 1 part iodine. It used to clear it up straight away. A friend recommended Bonnie Working Dog for my dogs but when I saw the ingredient list I wouldn't use it. I can't find anything on the Purina website re ingredients but from memory wheat was the 1st ingred.

2 1/2 days after Panda tore his toenail off & it still bleeds slightly when he goes outside with a cover over it, at vet's instruction to keep it clean. ETA Toe near bone on bowl.

Yep, that's about how it looks. The vet nurse rang today to see how he's going. The worst part of it is the wrapping up each time he goes out to toilet. I had him in his pen outside today on an old sheet with a patch of grass exposed. Needless to say he didn't take advantage of it. When I was taking it the pen back inside he snuck away from me & had a great time running around in the dirt with my Border Collie. It still gets a small patch of pink blood when I wrap it for going outside. Before wrapping it this morning it looked nice & dry until I took the plastic bag off & discovered the blood. The next time I put some gauze on the toe 1st but again a small patch of blood. I guess it's all going to take time.

My JS pup has had the puppy vantage until recently & I've given the adult one to my BC on occasion. My cat didn't like the cat one though.

Thanks guys, Panda hopes he can grow a normal toe nail. Even a jaunty angled one would be better than the alternative. :D

I took Panda to the vet this morning about his toe. After examining it she said he sure did a job on it. She said he's ripped it off at an inward scoop shape rather than straight off & it may mean that the nail won't grow back if he's ripped the quick out. She said it could also mean exposed bone which could lead to infection getting in. He has to stay inside & when he goes outside to toilet I'm to put 2 small zip lock bags on his foot to prevent dirt getting in. I have yet to try that, so far I put a patch on his foot & taped it on. While I had my back turned he had snuck outside & it came off. It still looked clean so no need to rinse it off. I have to look out for any swelling which would mean it has closed over & the new growing nail wouldn't be able to get through which would mean surgery to remove the nail bed & bone tip & close the skin over the end. He'd still have a toe but no nail. I sure hope that doesn't happen, it's only a couple of months since he was desexed, he doesn't need another GA so soon, not to mention the cost. It cost a bomb for his anti-biotics & pain relief this morning.

My 9 m/o today Japanese Spitz pup hurt his front side toe. It was at a strange angle & it had bled a lot. At 1st I thought he may have broken his toe. While I was bathing it in salt water he gave a little cry. I let it soak for a little while & then as I was drying his foot I noticed that the nail was hanging by a thread. I gently gave a little tug & it came off. At 1st I thought he'd have to go to the vet in the morning, now I'm not sure. Has any ones dog lost a toenail? & did it grow back? Should I still take him to the vet? After bathing in the salt water I was going to put some Betadine on it but noticed it had a use by date of 10/10. Even though a vet had told me a few years ago that iodine lasts forever I didn't want to risk it.

What Influences Energy Levels?

I've had 2 Border Collies & they have both been reasonably quiet dogs. Not at all like you'd expect Borders to be. I put it down to my lifestyle. I used to take my 1st BC to training, obedience & agility 5 times a week. My present BC goes to obedience training & sheep herding once a week & I've been teaching her 'moves' for k9freestyle. They both enjoy/ed their outings but happy to spend their days sleeping or playing with our other dogs. -
My boy was spayed a month or so ago. He had both retained testicles. He also had to have a tooth removed & tear ducts flushed. With IV fluids & pre-blood test. Stupid spell check can't spell anathetic, neither can I. lol. It all cost around $730 & I was quoted closer to $780. He had a zig zag suture line, they weren't too hard to find. I had him done at 8 mths because I'd heard they can become cancerous & I didn't want to take any chances. The vet wanted to do him closer to 6 mths but I believe in them maturing before desexing, so I was disappointed I couldn't wait longer. The biggest benefit in having it done was that he was starting to mark his territory inside & out. The morning I took him to the vets to get done he cocked his leg 4 times in the waiting room while I was making the arrangements. Thankfully he hasn't done it since. ;) He came home with pain meds & he was quiet & slept a lot for the 1st 3 days. He also had to wear an Elizabethan collar for 8 days until I was sure he wouldn't keep licking his stitches.

It's beautiful. -
When I last took my cat to be vaccinated the vet asked if we were having a problem with fleas, yes i said. She said they were so bad at the clinic that even the humans were being bitten. For the cat she said to use Revolution, which I have all her life, & Advantage alternate fortnights. I haven't tried it because we seem to have gotten rid of the fleas by treating all the dogs with Advantage & cat with Revolution. I also sprayed the carpet where the dogs lie with a flea spray. I can't use bombs because of the fish tanks. In the past Advantage was all I used on my 1st Border Collie who was allergic to fleas. Worked every time but doesn't seem to be as effective as it used to be.

They are looking lovely. Does the small white patches disappear on their faces? In border collies the blaze narrows with age or disappears if narrow at birth.

I've had 2 elderly dogs on Cartrophen injections & I didn't find they did any good. There was no noticeable difference in their arthritis. The 1st was my BC who had 3 courses over about a 2 yr period. The 2nd was my son's mixed breed dog who only had the one course.
-
Is this your 1st bi-black litter then? Very cute. If I were to get a sheltie it would have to be a bi-black, downsizing from a BC. ;)
-
Congratulations to you all. Sounds like a fantastic day of competing.

My dogs will eat anything, but a couple of years ago a friend gave out some patties at my obedience club because her dog was sick & couldn't eat them any more. I gave my 2 older dogs 1/2 each & neither of them were fussed about them, the older one did eat it but brought it up later. I did hear late last year that Dr B sold the business & was then sorry he did. Maybe that was when the change in recipe took place. When I originally bought his books I used to make my own barf meals & they were very sloppy. I used to mix everything up in a blender & needed liquid from eggs, yogurt, oils etc to get them to blend the vegies. Back then the dog had 40 vegie mix & 60% raw meaty bones. I think the barf patties contain crushed bone which defeats the purpose of the dog ripping & chewing the RMB. As with any change in diet you will need to change over slowly.

All sounds like great fun. I hope we get to see some wonderful videos. ;)

Have you actually rang the breeder. That's what I had to do. Each email was answered but they lead to more questions & answers. Much easier to write down what you want to know so you don't forget anything & get it all sorted in one phone call. I find the easiest way to put photo on here is to use photobucket, copy the image code on each pic & past in this window.

My parents had a Scotty X when I was born & he died when I was seven at about 13 yrs, dad was away for the weekend & he had cried all day. Dad had him PTS when he got home. My 1st dog was bought as a Foxie X but mum used to say he could be ACD X because of the blue ticking on his legs. Could have also been a little Border Collie too as he was mostly black with a white blaze, ruff & legs all with the blue ticking. He was my 1st dog & so intelligent. He used to get out when Dad forgot to close the gates. The last time he never came back. Mum thought he was stolen as an insurance collector wanted to buy him but of course mum said not on your life, he's my daughter's dog. Next I had a little black n tan terrier X. He could have been min pin or similar but he had ears like a corgi. He was a highly strung little dog & mum & dad eventually gave him to an old couple who spoiled him terribly. As an adult my oh had a dog that his parents had bred. She was 1/4 poodle, 1/4 daschie, 1/2 some kind of hound. She came to live with us when we bought our house & lived to about 13. She had died overnight in her bed. We then got a X border collie from the RSPCA. He was a lovely dog, followed my oh everywhere. We took him to visit relatives & he stayed around us all day coming to me each time my boys came back from a walk in the bush at the end of the street. When we were going home we couldn't find him. My cousin's daughter saw a dead dog on the side of the road & it was him. He was nearly 9. Then I got my 1st pure bred Border Collie, my heart dog. She went to the bridge at exactly 7 weeks before her 15th birthday. She is in my sigpic, photo taken at 14 yrs 4 days. She was deaf, going blind & had dementia. It was very sad to see my best friend scared of me & get lost in the house or yard & cry because she couldn't find her way out. We found her dead in the backyard. I look at her lovely old face each time I post on DOL.

I had flyball- and I thought IT would be cancelled!! But it wasn't and in the end Abby ran most of the day so the team was glad I didn't ditch them for DWD. And I am getting the feeling that I might have a uni prac on the next day . I have been meaning to start putting together a routine but I SUCK!! Oh no you're not. At least you have a dog super willing to work for you, unlike me. My DWD entry is sent & received. Now I have 2 weeks to get some practice in, especially get Tilba enthused without a food lure. Also was told to put a bit of bounce into my routine as I can't skip - slide sideways.
