I have this same problem with my 5.5 y/o Border Collie. She was doing it at the breeders who said she was working on it & it had improved. She won't jump on me either but everyone else. At my obedience club it's worse as she jumps up on all her 'friends'. They know it's a problem, when I tell her not to jump on them. They usually say, oh don't worry I'm used to dogs, or she does it so lightly I hardly feel her. Even the instructors who give advice on not jumping up will at times give her attention when she jumps on them. I have given up trying to stop her. Family members encourage her to jump on them too. So some solutions is to totally ignore her as you are doing & try & get other people doing it. I know it's a loosing battle. Other methods is if she jumps on them while they are sitting is to instantly stand up, don't look at her or push her off, it's all attention. Good luck. :)

I did a behind the scenes tour at Taronga Zoo a few years ago & saw the Sun Bears being trained. They reminded me of Staffordshire Bull Terriers at the time.

My JS does the nesting thing too occasionally. Especially if he goes on my BC's bed. As to the feeding I would suggest that you decrease his kibble very gradually over a period of a couple of weeks until you have it down to a suitable amount. That way he won't notice so much that he's getting less. :D

He reminds me of my son's dog when she was a puppy. Sadly she went to the bridge last year. Good advise from BC Crazy. I remember my 1st BC April, she wouldn't move. At that time I thought all dogs just automatically knew how to walk on lead.

I miss read the 1st bit & thought you said she'd be an inside dog & on re-reading you said outside dog. It's usually best to go the way you intend to go for the rest of her life. If there's any way of setting up a part of downstairs that's not carpeted, with a doggy door so she can come inside out of the weather. Good luck & we'd love to see pics of your little baby.

Banjo is such a cutie, love the 1st pic with the ball in her mouth. Certainly worth framing. -

I trawl this thread regularly to see how your pups are going. Zereuloh, Tyrion's ears gave me a laugh in the 1st pic. I didn't think they were ever going to stand up. Tilba my BC has one of each. -

It is not advisable to give dogs weight bearing bones especially from cattle. Believe me I know when 2 previous dogs broke the tip off a k9 tooth. I give my little JS chicken legs, lamb shanks & turkey wings. He loves them & does a happy dance at meal times. The 1st time he had a chicken leg, over a year ago now, it took him 3.5 hours to eat it. Ailwake loved your photos of Nixon at the water. Reminded me of the time we took Tilba to a river for her 1st & only swim. -
Glad you came here for advice. As already said too much exercise too soon is no good for growing bones/joints & with the risk of hip dysplasia & the GSD you don't want to take that risk. It's best to wait until 12 months old. I taught my BC heeling around the house off lead using a food lure to start with. When practising loose lead walking you can put in a few steps of heeling & back to LLW for a no more than 10 min walk with lots of rest stops where you can practise some sits & downs etc.

oh dear.... reading those comments made me worry. I will bring him to a vet next thing tomorrow. He is really quiet.. not at all active and sparkly. ( unless we get really excited then he would get excited too , or else he would just sit or lay by our feet as we're on the computer etc.. ) He gets excited by food mostly (haha) And i haven't brought him to the vet yet because, the previous owners just got him vaccinated 3 days before we bought him over, c5 c3 so it didnt occur to me to visit the vet again so soon. They handed us a receipt with his microchip number on it. He is also desexed, he has no testicles. I just started trying to cut down on his food and feed him fish and he now weighs 13.6 kg. We put dry food out and he doesn't finish it. ( previous owners asked us to give 1.5 cups ) we're cutting to just fish in the morning ( twice a week) and raw chicken necks for breakfast and dry food ( 1 cup ) for dinner. We walk him twice early morning for him to poop pee about 10 mins for so, and then evening for an hour or so. He is doing very well with obedience training, we train him twice a day, he can obey sit, lay and leave it. Well done on making improvements with his exercise. My boy isn't that lively either apart from playing with my Border Collie several times a day & a daily zoomie. He's also not destructive, only chews up the occasional peg or tissue. Not to worry you further but did the previous owners give you a sterilisation certificate with the vac & microchip papers? Does he look recently shaved for desexing? I ask because my little boy had retained testicles & had to be spayed like the females are. Also chicken necks aren't a good choice for raw bones, much better to have a couple of lamb ribs/shanks or chicken legs. One of either is all my guy gets per day & he's starting to get a little tubby. He does a happy dance at meal times. I don't give him kibble because of his teeth. The raw meaty bone diet is to get his teeth reasonably clean. It's a long battle in his case.

I have never thought of taking my dogs to voting & have never seen any there either. But then we live in the suburbs.

He's a lovely boy. My little runt JS has the same creamy brown fur under his ears too, not so bad now but as a baby it was very noticeable. I think it's just the wax coming from his ears. Agree with the others, he needs to go out more often to relieve himself. My little fellow holds on all night & some mornings doesn't want to get up in the morning to go. Sometimes when he does go 1st thing he's going for what seems like a minute or 2. Forgot to ask, how old is he? & what's his name?

Dogs Involved In Fatal Car Accident

So pleased to hear that the family are coming to get Jess & Sammy. I remember hearing lately either on dol or FB that in the same circumstances the dog wasn't wanted by the family & was looking for a new home. -
Early Neurological Stimulation Of Puppies
luvsdogs replied to luvsdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for all your replies. I first heard of it on Callicoma's website in her puppy section & wondered how many breeders did it & if it really made a difference to the temperament & smarts of the puppies. -
For breeders out there, have you tried this on your litters? & if so does it work? http://breedingbetterdogs.com/pdfFiles/articles/early_neurological_stimulation_en.pdf

Confused As To What To Do Next?
luvsdogs replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I've just been reading this thread this afternoon as I've been away for a few days. It's been very hard to see to read the last few pages. I'm so sorry to hear of Joey's passing. What a beautiful little boy he was & so loved by you & your oh. RIP dear Joey. We went through a similar situation last year when my son's 12 y/o dog Sooty passed away at the end of October & then 11 days later my mother in law passed away. It will get easier as time passes & you re-live all your memories of Joey. Take care of Renae & little Myia. -
Why You Shouldn't Shave Your Long Coated Dog
luvsdogs replied to luvsdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've had 2 border collies, both desexed, & both had different textured coats but both with thinner coats than your average BC. Both their sires had full coats & their dams average. April was easy to groom & rarely had mats. She used to have a noticeably summer & winter coat. Tilba doesn't seem to have a noticeable change in coat although she has thick pants & tail year round. She seems to take forever to blow her undercoat from her hips during a moult. I've always believed that they are/were like that because they live inside with heating & air con. My Japanese Spitz, also desexed, has a thicker coat at the moment but not as thick as the show JS. So with these 3 dogs I think desexing has had the reverse effect than others have stated. -
My little JS dances around on his back legs in great excitement when he's about to be fed his raw meaty bones. :)

Why You Shouldn't Shave Your Long Coated Dog
luvsdogs replied to luvsdogs's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've mostly had long haired animals. The 1st being a X-Persian cat, then my OH had a X-Poodle when I met him. She wasn't groomed much & had dreadlocks. Because of that I thought we'd get a short breed dog next. Never again. It was way worse for shedding so have had 2 Border Collies & a Japanese Spitz since. I have also had a pure bred Persian & he had to be bathed because of fleas, back then there were no flea spot-ons, & groomed regularly. My 1st Border was really easy to groom & rarely had mats. My present BC has a different coat & gets what I call her dreadlocks on her hips & thighs when shedding. My little JS is the worst to groom because his "wool" feels/looks like cotton wool when shedding. If they get really bad mats I cut it out. It doesn't show but I'd never get them shawn. I guess if I had Llasa Apso or Shih Tzu I'd have them clipped off. -
This article has been linked a couple of times on FB. For those who ask the question, can I shave my long coated dog? here's the reasons why not. http://www.examiner.com/article/why-you-shouldn-t-shave-your-double-coated-dog

Human Grade Chicken Mince Or Chicken Frames Minced?

Have a look at this old video from the Midday Show in 1993. http://www.rawmeatybones.com/tvVideo/raymartin/raymartin.html -
Agree with above link. If you scroll down a little way you'll see a little brown book, Before You Get Your Puppy. It's a free download along with After You Get Your Puppy.

Congratulations on getting a new puppy. You can download for free Before & After you get your Puppy at dogstardaily.com They were written by veterinary behaviourist Dr Ian Dunbar. You don't have to follow it to the letter but gives you some good ideas on socialisation & what to expect & when.

I don't have any experience with a rough collie other than Lassie, lol, & many years ago when I used to walk April to school with my son I'd stop off for her to have a play with a lovely collie fellow on the way home. Have you taught him some basic manners like sitting before he gets any privileges? http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/adolescent-changes Yes tricks are good. Better than long walks to tire out the brain.

I've used both on my JS for travel anxiety separately & together & neither had an effect.
