  1. I love dogs, but I don't like cats, no reason, just my personal preference. I love the kids in the family, but I can take or leave other people's kids, also just my personal preference. I would be interested how the OP knew the lady on the plane was an animal lover? Did she have a dog with her? As long as no children or animals are hurt, then I see nothing wrong with everyone making their own choices who or what the associate with.
  2. My breed is Miniature Long Haired Dachshund In 1991 Cooper was $250 (I lost him 2005 ) , 1997 Mini was $450 and 2002 Rover was $650, all from Registered Breeders. I am thinking the time is right for another puppy soon, so I will see what the going rate is in 2012
  3. When Rover was about 9 months old, he ate a sewing needle, complete with thread What followed was emergency surgery at midnight and two nights in intensive care The over thousand dollar vet bill certainly reminded me to be more careful with needles in future
  4. I was shocked to hear on the radio this morning that this happened in my street! I have seen a man, about the right age, walk two dogs off lead up our street many times. My husband once saw him with the two dogs, plus a shopping trolley with about 6 puppies as well! I am not sure if this is the same bloke, but it sounds like it might be.
  5. Back to the vet this morning for another check up. The eye is healing perfectly, so no more checks for 6 months, unless something doesn't look right. I'm pretty sure that at 14 years old, we will be back at the vets within 6 months for something Thanks for all the good wishes, I'm sure they helped
  6. Mini was back at the vets yesterday to get the eye checked after surgery last Thursday. The vet said the eye is showing signs of real improvement, so fingers crossed it heals completely!
  7. Mini had a Grid Keratectomy today. She is home, and a bit sleepy, but not too bad. She has a course of antibiotics to take, and ointment to go in her eye. Fingers crossed it heals ok now.
  8. My poor old girl, Mini, had a weepy eye for a day or so, so off to the vet with her. It turns out she has an ulcer on her eye. We have ointment that has to be put in her eye every couple of hours, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better. The vet wants to see her again on Wednesday, and he has said that if it hasn't improved, she will probably need surgery I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this with their dog? I am so worried about her, even the thought of aneasthetic at 14 years old is bad enough, without her eye being cut open. Any spare 'healing vibes' anyone could send her way would be greatly appreciated

  10. I am no expert, but I believe that every house has to have a clear path to the front door (ie no dogs) Of course police have the right to enter a property especially once a domestic violence report has been received. What if an ambulance had been required? Should they wait for the domestic violence victim, or the perpetrator to restrain the dogs? Keep the dogs in the back yard.
  11. thay are not new, they have been around for many years. They are actually Black and Tan Dapples. It scares me to hear that they are the 'latest craze' because if unscrupoulous people breed them to another dapple, then double dapples occur, with the many birth defects that go with it eta: my 8 year old black and tan boy's mother was Silver Dapple
  12. I think the best thing to do is learn as much as you can about your chosen breed, that way you would know the questions to ask that are relevant to your breed. Once I found the breeder I wanted a pup from, (and once she was happy to let me have one of her pups) I found she was happy to tell me all she could about the breed. Her husband joked to me that once she starts talking dachshunds she never knows when to stop I waited 9 months for him to be born, and in that time we spoke often. He is now nearly 8 years old and we are still in touch. It was really a gut feeling that she was the right one, and when the time comes for another dachshund it would be from her again, or someone she recommends to me
  13. no words seem adequate my heart goes out to all affected by this tragedy. Godspeed the ones who didn't make it
  14. Thanks for the replies. I am not a novice dog owner. I am well aware of all the methods that "should" work, in fact I have tried most of them. I was really only after opinions on this particular product.
  15. Thanks for the suggestion, but he won't eat anything too big. I have tried him with chicken frames and he will only chew for a little while, then leave it. I have picked it up and put it in the fridge until the next day and he still won't eat it, even though he had nothing else to eat. He has always been a gulper, and he won't chew toys, treat or bones for long.
  16. My dachshund, Rover is 7 years old, and we have battled with plaque all his life. He has a chicken wing daily, but he only chews for a little while, then he rips it apart, until the peices are small enough for him to swallow. I have been using Oral Gel daily for about 18 months, and it seems to have slowed the plaque a bit, but he still needs a teeth cleaning. I came across this product and was wondering if anyone had tried it? http://www.holisticanimalmedicines.com/pla...ver-remedy.html edited for spelling
  17. My Rover will not chew anything, he gulps everything and obviously finds chewing anything a waste of time. He is only 7 and has already lost quite a few teeth. My vet recommended MaxiGuard Oral Cleansing Gel. It can be used with or without brushing. I put it on his gums every night before bed, (he doesn't like me brushing) and his breath is much sweeter and his teeth have remained white :D I have been using it for about 6 months, and I will continue to do so.
  18. Cooper was not good this morning, not eating or drinking, and his feet were cold, despite being in front of the heater all night. My dearly beloved Cooper crossed the bridge at about 12.45pm today. The vet was booked to come around at 1.00pm and my husband was coming home from work to be here. Steve came in an patted Cooper, who was laying on the lounge. A few minutes later, we looked and realised that Cooper was no longer breathing. Maybe he waited for his Dad to come home, and then he gave us the best gift he could have - taking that awful decision away from us. Run free at the bridge my boy, no diets there and you will never be cold again. Until we meet again....... Pauline
  19. Thanks for all the replies, it makes it a little easier to know I am not alone. I had a sad update today. The vet said that Cooper has had a stroke  He is not in any pain, just in his own little world. We will take each day as it comes for now.
  20. I am normally a very private person, and if I am in pain I prefer to 'suffer' privately, but I think I will need support. It has been very difficult for me to admit to myself, let alone publicly, that each day I have with my beloved Cooper (15 year old L/H Mini Dachshund) is a bonus. He is fading quickly, and I am beginning to feel that the end is near. He has been on medication for Congestive Heart Failure for about 3 years now, and the medications were recently increased to cope with his deteriorating health. He has always been a good eater, but lately he has been refusing his food more often, and when I pat him I can feel his bones He often gets distressed as though he doesn't know where he is. I look into his eyes and they are so cloudy I wonder if he can even see me. I have decided that I am not going to worry too much about food that is 'good' for him, he can have what ever he will eat, and try and keep him as comfortable as possible. All I am hoping and praying for now is that he goes to the Bridge peacefully on his own, so I don't have to make that awful decision. How have others coped when faced with the inevitable? Pauline
  21. If it were me, I would ring the vet who prescribed the ear drops and ask if there would be any reaction if used with the Malaseb ear wash. Pauline
  22. I had been battling allergies and fungal ear infections with one of my dogs for years, so I can understand the smell I read in one of your threads that you have bought a bottle of Malaseb shampoo. I use this as a weekly ear wash and have not had any ear problems for a couple of years. Dilute 1ml Malaseb Shampoo in 30ml of water, and using a syringe, put into the ear. Leave in for a few minutes and then let it drain out. WIpe out the ear with cotton balls. If there is any gunk in the ear you can do this daily, or even twice a day if it is bad, but as a maintenance weekly keeps the ears nice and clean. Hope this helps Pauline
  23. If your family and friends think that way, THEY are the ones with the problem, IMHO
  24. Even if you take your dog to the vet DAILY for a checkup, it will not minimise the chances of illness, at most the illness will be diagnosed sooner. In the years that my dog was entire he always had at least annual checkups, and I can never once remember him having his Prostate checked Can I ask, why you would ever put your dog at ANY risk if the prevention was so easy?
  25. When I got my first boy, Cooper, I always intended to get him desexed, but I never got around to it (I know, my bad ) He was always with us, so no chance of him impregnating a female. When he was 7 years old, he developed an enlarged prostate, and the vet recommended castration. We had him done then. At that age it was a big operation, and the recovery time was also extended. I decided then that if I got another male he would be desexed at an early age. Rover was done at about 6-7 months, and once the aneasthetic wore off completely you would never know he had anything done! IMHO, I can see no need to leave a dog entire, unless he will be used for breeding or showing.
