Hi There, I'm a big believer in raw feeding and I'm seeing excellent results. The only thing I would say is that it takes time (but is worth it) and my freezer is overrun with animal meats, organs, fish and other stuff for the dogs rather than us Some people comment on how they eat better than we do! Recently, I found this pet shop about half an hour from Melbourne that makes his own raw mix and it sounds really great and is very reasonably priced. I'm trying it out at the moment but the only thing is, the tubs only say what is in the meat and doesn't say the quantities. Should I be concerned about this? One label reads: 'Home made 100% Natural' Ox heart, chicken frames, chicken wings, mixed vegies, omega 3,6,9 oils, lamb, ox kidney, ox tongue, calcium and tripe. Also, Vets all natural complete mix. Should I be concerned for example that this would contain too much calcium that may cause issues if fed regularly? Perhaps I should only feed small quantities here and there rather than consider it as a regular diet? I have two staffs a puppy 15 weeks and an older bitch 18 mths. Currently they get fed: Natural yoghurt, sardines, chicken frames/wings, lamb heart, kidneys, tripe, shanks, with veg pulp and juice - not in that order and not all in the same meal of course. Are there any raw feeders out there that want to offer any thoughts on this? They both eat with gusto and have lovely shiny coats, white choppers and full of energy so seem to be doing well...

Thanks Guys... I'm using a normal flat collar and I've stopped walking them together now as they tend to influence eachother and I don't want Stella to change her good heeling habits on his account. I will try practicing heeling with him in the backyard, with some chicken - which he will love because he is such a foodie - and hopefully that might work. I'm in the process of choosing a dog school at the moment to start him with in the new year, any idea's anyone? I live in the Belgrave area and there is one in Knox I've heard that is supposed to be pretty good..

Hi There, I have an 18mth old English Staff who is an absolute darling, doesn't pull, very patient, listens and obeys (most of the time). I recently bought a new staffy puppy - a male who is gung ho, full of confidence and very headstrong. Till now, I've been walking Stella on her own because he's been too young. Now that he is 5 months, we've started going for 10 minute slow walks along the nature strip in a quiet street. The problem I have is that he pulls like a sled dog from the moment I snap on the leash to the moment we return. I've tried changing directions each time to try to make him watch me more, tried standing still and taking two steps then treats when he is looking at me and not pulling, tried not advancing at all unless he is calm and not pulling and other things but still nothing seems to be helping. Now when I have both of them, they are so excited Stella is wanting to surge ahead along with him and pull on the lead too Does anyone have any suggestions they could offer that might help me with this issue?

Adverse Reaction To Vaccination
FB Rescue_Adoption replied to FB Rescue_Adoption's topic in Puppy Chat
Thanks All!! I popped in to see my Vet with Max and he confirmed that it is a reaction, nothing to worry about, should disappear in a week or so which is what all you clever people have been saying! You guys are all so talented! ;-) thanks again! -
Hi Fellow DOLers, Max had his 3rd vaccination a week ago and last night, out of nowhere appears a lump in the area where he was vaccinated - the size of a flattened golfball. So, I'm thinking hmmm... it could be an adverse reaction to the injection only way to find out is take him to the Vet and find out ...just wondering if I'm over reacting here... His behaviour hasn't changed at all, he's eating/drinking normally. There doesn't appear to be soreness, redness, loss of hair or any other sign around the lump and it moves easily under the skin typical of a swelling caused by inflammatory cells. Do I wait to see if it goes down/goes away or do I take him in to be on the safe side? Anyone out there that's had to deal with this before that could offer advice/support?

How Should I Respond To 8 Month Old Puppy's Play Biting?
FB Rescue_Adoption replied to fainty_girl's topic in Puppy Chat
we use a firm 'Haaaar' and then get up and move away. If you persist with this they learn that it is not acceptable behaviour and soon get the message ;-) -
Being a Puppy I'd imagine he'd be on 3 or 4 feeds a day so perhaps use the kong or treat balls to give him his food in as it will take him awhile to get the food out. I have a 10 week old puppy at the moment and when I need to keep him quiet while I'm busy doing stuff I find this works a treat and one feed via treat balls will keep him occupied for ages. Hope this helps!

Good Luck with it, hopefully it won't get to that point for you. I'll let you know how I go with Max's surgery on Tuesday. Hopefully it will all be fine. Fingers, toes (and puppy paws) crossed!

Oh No! I hear that's a very intensive issue to have to manage. All the best.

Thanks for the advice and LOVE the photo's, your babies are gorgeous! I keep going back to look at these photo's..the poor little bubba with the bucket on her head.. I hope she is all good now!

Thanks everyone! I'm feeling much more comfortable about this now and really appreciate hearing from others that have had to deal with this in the past. I've since contacted my breeder who is just wonderful and supportive and we have decided to take him to her Vet to have the procedure done as it is something that is more common than I first thought and he sounds like he has a lot of experience dealing with it so fingers crossed everything goes well. I'm using drops in his eye at the moment but not seeing much change since last Thursday. Surgery is on Tuesday so hopefully that will be the end of it! I'd rather get it done properly and not have any issues down the track so the Vet is going to reposition the glad using the 'pocket technique' which is apparently the technique which is most successful (although can also be the most expensive), would rather pay the fee for the best result. thanks again for your replies and I'll keep you posted on the outcome!

thanks, here's a pic of what it is looking like..

Thanks! I was so hoping someone else had experience with this! Did the ointment help at all? He runs and hides when he realises that I have the ointment in my hand so it's hard to get it in the right spot sometimes with him wriggling around. I will be sure to get a few quotes and see how it progresses. The Vet wants to see him in 3 days and has mentioned that he may arrange for the dog opthalmologist to be there also (sounding expensive already ) anyway, just important that it gets fixed really. poor little fella, not the happiest little guy at the moment!

Hi, My 10 week old Staffy puppy woke up yesterday morning with what I now know is known as a 'cherry eye' or 'protracted third eyelid'. It looks like a big pink bulb of flesh that is growing out of the inside corner of the eye and it looks hideous, poor puppy! Has anyone had any experience with this condition? We took him to our Vet yesterday and he mentioned that it can be quite common in the 'bully' breeds and seeing as Max is a Staffordshire it's quite common however, we've always had Staffords and have never seen or heard of this condition before. I now have some eye ointment to use but besides this he's mentioned that he may need surgery to correct it so I'm quietly freaking out here. If anyone has had experience and has treated this successfully, I would love it if you could let me know..!

Barf Diet Or Raw Meaty Bones Diet
FB Rescue_Adoption posted a topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi There, I have a 7 month old Staffy called Stella who is the love of my life and lately she has started to get some bald patches along the topline of her back. Weird thing is she is not itchy, it's just that the hair seems to be falling out and going a bit scaly. I'm looking at changing her diet as I've heard that some dogs can have allergies to red meat. I've been on the internet reading about the BARF diet and wanted to try this but then I read about the 'Raw Meaty Bones' diet and I must say, I'm a bit confused. The BARF info says that dogs are Omnivores but I clearly would have thought that they are carnivores so not sure why the BARF diet includes so many vegetables (pulp) etc Is anyone able to help with this? A raw meat diet sounds more like what mother nature would have intended for a dog to eat but then I'm not sure if that would lead to nutrient definciencies alone. I've ruled out environmental factors as she is walked daily and runs in the park and backyard and is never itchy after that. It seems to be diet related although she is on Eagle Pack and roo/beef mince in the evenings. Does anyone have any suggestions about either of my questions or these two diets in general?
