Hi, I'm just curious to know if anyone has tried a product called 'Glyde'? If so, is it a product that you would recommend? It's quite expensive so would love to hear from anyone's experience before I try it. Can it be used for early stages of Arthritis as a preventative or is it really just for dogs with advanced arthritis?

GSP's certainly do have a lot of energy, I wouldn't be running him beside a bike just yet, remember dogs need to learn to walk with you, this is an important practice for a dog, it helps to satisfy their migration instinct and allows him to take in the new smells outside his environment, so sometimes it's not just about making him run to drain the energy, there are other ways to do this as well, short bouts of obedience can be very tiring too. GSPs are working dogs and I strongly encourage you to do something with him on a regular basis where he can express that part of him, boredom and excess energy can be key factors for bad behaviours to develop from. I know you mention time is a key factor, I have struggled with it too but once you form a routine it's not so bad. I work full time often long hrs - 12 hr days are not uncommon and drive 40 mins to and from work but will always walk my stafford for 45 mins to an hr, in the dark, rain hail or shine in my gumboots, often with a torch in the darkness of the night - when I decided to bring her into my life - I decided that I was going to make sure that her needs as a dog would be met, it's only fair.

this episode had me bawling in seconds, my first reaction was to turn it off but then I didn't want to be ignorant about the issue, I had to see it but I hated seeing it. Rescue Ink - what a fantastic organisation. I hope that guy and anyone else that has anything to do with hurting an animal dies a slow, painful death. It's just so wrong and nothing upsets me more.

Its' very important also that your dog learns to cope with spending time alone without you, this will lessen the stress they go through when there are periods of time they can't be with you, as much as we would like them to be!

I would try Eagle Pack, it's an excellent dry food and my dogs love it. Their coats are shiny, they have heaps of energy and their poo's are nice and firm. I also feed raw meaty bones three times a week - a lamb shank, chicken carcass or wings/necks to mix it up with the odd tin of sardines and yoghurt from time to time. It's just a matter of trying out different brands and seeing which gives you the best result. Good Luck! :D

Stella sleeps mostly on the bed, near my feet and sometimes in the bed when this goes undetected by me, since it's been hot she's been sleeping on the cool floor in the bathroom. If we have people over and it's late she will actually come and tell me that she is ready for bed by sitting as far away from me but closest to the bedroom and she will stare at me until people leave and I go to bed..hehe

WRONG on so many levels! She shouldn't be considering a dog if that's her view. A rabbit would be a better choice for her I think. She can give it all the vegetables she wants!

Hi Erny, They sell roo tails at Maroondah Produce in Ferntree Gully. From memory you get two 2 ft long pieces for $4.50.

Same goes for French Bulldogs - they are $3,000 on average. One day I hope to own one if I can afford it. ;)

Max has started this thing where he wants any toy that Stella has - if she is showing any interest in a particular toy he decides - "that's it, I want it".. "gotta have that now". Stella being so non confrontational and submissive to any dog - just let's him have it. Now at the Park with dogs he knows that we often walk together with, he is wanting their toys, sticks, balls. Funny thing once he has them he just holds onto them and doesn't really show interest in playing with them as such. He just wants to 'guard' them. Strange for a staffy but I think he has dominant tendencies and just wants to 'win' all the time. Can dogs be trained out of this sort of behaviour? It's getting to the point where I can't have him off leash because he wants every other dogs stick or toy and is starting want to fight for them Idea's anyone?

I agree that it is to do with genetics also, Stella suffers allergies but Max has no problem whatsoever, both are from the same bitch but different stud dogs. I know another lady who also purchased a pup from Stella's litter and hers also suffers allergies so I've always thought there was something in the genetics of the male dog that has flowed through to the litter, the funny thing about her allergies is that she seems to be allergic to so many things!! Which is why I take interest in everything I find on the subject. Last year we went away for a holiday, brought her with us to some remote bush location, as soon as we arrived - Stella was bitten by some insect and went into Anaphylactic shock!! We were lucky that we found someone in the area who had a vet's number on hand and were able to get her there quickly - she seems to have such violent reactions to things from time to time and it drives me nuts! Anyway, she is on low dose cortisone as we speak! That time of year again!

yes, it's all very interesting! I've never had mine on any heartworm prevention simply due to my Vet not being able to tell me the last time he dealt with a heartworm case, due to the climate in Vic it's mostly too cold for heartworm larvae and eggs to hatch is what I was told so I thought good, one less batch of chemicals to bombard her system with!

sorry forgot to point out the context' to my question. This is the part in the article towards the end of it that has got me thinking!! 3. When using parasite control, try to use products that only affect the parasite you are targeting. Eg, use a product that only kills fleas if you have a flea problem, or a product that only kills heartworm larvae, and not one that also kills intestinal worms. For regular worming, consider having a faecal test done to see if there are worms present at large numbers (much like we do for horses and other stock animals) rather than just treating every 3 months. Pets can tolerate low numbers of worms naturally. Thoughts?

Hi There, I'm interested to find out how many people worm their dogs every 3 months. My female Stafford - Stella suffers from seasonal allergies and to date has been on Advocate monthly for worm control etc. There is an article written by Dr Bruce (Vets All Natural) that talks about allergies in some pets being exacerbated by various treatments that we've come to accept as normal in the ongoing care of our animals. I've attached it below. He goes on to suggest worm control/flea control etc as a stand alone treatment if the problem arises. Although, this seems more of a reactive way to treat issues moreso than a proactive way - I'm thinking of trying to see if it makes a difference. Do you guys all worm your dogs every 3 months? or use one of those all in one preparations such as Advocate or Revolution?
