  1. Thanks Erny! Yep I am looking for some heavier reading I am fascinated by dog psychology and behaviour just for my own personal interest. Not planning on a career change just yet Though I did look at doing the NDTF course but couldn't do the electives I wanted to do externally so decided it wasn't worth it. Do courses use these volumes as references?
  2. Has anyone read the Handbooks of Applied Dog Behaviour and Training (Volumes 1, 2, 3) by Steven Lindsay and are they any good? They look very interesting and I would really like to buy them but just want to make sure that it is worth paying all that money for them.
  3. We are now in week 2 of our training and all is going well ;) We have been training 4 times a week and getting up at 6am. Kynan's bowels are very predictable and he has to go exactly 2 minutes after he starts running then he is comfortable
  4. Maybe K9 is starting a rival forum for training in drive and seminar discussions etc? ;)
  5. Please may I add 2 large to my order (total=2 large + 2 medium). Thank you
  6. I managed to change our holiday plans so I could see Steve. I am very excited! Hey Steve, Will you be offering any private sessions while you are in Adelaide?
  7. During the breaks are you allowed to use paw wax or moisturiser on your dogs paws? Have read the rules but doesn't say anything only that protective clothing cannot be worn by the dog.
  8. Yes definately do it. I swapped mine over myself and I don't know much about bikes. I feel alot safer having the rear brake on right hand side. We went out again this morning at 0630 for our third training session this week. We did 4kms which I am happy with for week 1. Kynan is doing great and I am doing ok. My butt hurts even though I have a padded gel seat. Hoping it will toughen up eventually. Thinking of getting some bike pants with extra padding (long ones though not short ones! ) I am very excited about doing the ET and training for it. Hopefully the enthusiasm will last another 4 months though it is going to get harder to get up early when the weather gets colder!
  9. Yes Ness you should then we can do some training together (if you wanted to :D ) Last year it was advertised in the May DogsSA Magazine with a closing date of 12th June 2009 (2009 ET was 27th June).
  10. It is Saturday 26th June at the German Shepherd Dog Club SA West Beach. It usually starts at about 8am. Would you be interested getting together closer to the date at West Beach for a couple of training runs? My main worry is getting Kynan to run in a line with other dogs and to get him used to passing and being passed.
  11. Is anyone else thinking of doing the Endurance Test this year with their dog? I am very keen to do it this year with my two year old boy Kynan. Thought I would start this thread so we can encourage and support each other. I bought a new mountain bike last year just for the Endurance Test and over the summer got Kynan used to walking next to the bike and running next to it around the backyard. It is 18 weeks until the ET is being held here in Adelaide so thought I should start training this week to slowly build Kynan up. For the first 6 weeks we are following the Couch to 5k programme to get Kynan running for 30 mins continuously beside the bike. If we can achieve that I will be extremely happy and then depending on how he is coping will then have 12 weeks to get him up to 10kms and then 15kms (won't attempt 20kms until test day). First session went well and Kynan still had energy when we got home and later that night! Rules for Conduct of an Endurance Test Preparing Your Dog for an Endurance Test
  12. Started training Kynan to track today and we did a 5, 10, and 20 metre track and he did great I am using the food drop method but I found ants to be a real problem. Not much of a reward getting bitten on the nose by ants! Has anyone else had this problem and how did you overcome it?

  15. No not yet will wait until date confirmed and then try to work something out. I know that seeing Steve in Adelaide is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Its a tough choice: Steve or Bedarra Island?
  16. oh no not May. We will be away! I deliberately kept all of April free too. oh well I guess whatever date it is it won't suit some people. Do you think OH will let me reschedule our holiday?
  17. What are the names of all the sheppies? There are a few there i dont recognise
  18. Hello and welcome back! Lovely photo of you and Leo. Kynan also says hi to you both and sends his love!
  19. Thats great Tilly! I cant believe how effective the program is and how easy. I cant wait to start testing Kynan out in the real world after next week.
  20. Leslie Nelson's Really Reliable Recall The book and dvd arrived just before Christmas and we have been doing the program for 1 week. I am really impressed with the results so far. Even on day 2 i could see a marked improvement. The RRR is an emergency recall but as Leslie said it has also improved Kynan's everyday recall and i can now call him away from the tv when animals are on and call him in when the boys next door are playing basketball and he wants the ball! I highly recommend the book and dvd and think that it should be compulsory reading and viewing for all new puppy and dog owners.
  21. Congratulations ness and Kenzie for the DWD title! I had a look at the video and you were both amazing! You both looked like you were having heaps of fun and you looked lovely and so relaxed I had a quick look at some of your other videos and can you imagine my suprise when one of them co-starred me as a steward and a figure of eight post
  22. Count me in! Willing to pay upfront to secure spot in group and private sessions. Would like to see drive training and dog-dog aggression/reactivity covered.
  23. I really wanted to do the course too and looked into it as it sounded really good. As i am in Adelaide i would have to do the distance course and that only has limited electives. The two subjects i really wanted to do (obedience class and tracking) were not available so i didnt think it was worth paying all that money to do electives i was not interested in. Plus they say there are 2 week long prac blocks in Melb but they are actually 2 ten day blocks which means a total of three weeks away which adds to the costs.
