  1. Training classes is often misunderstood by owners. Training classes is about learning how to control your dog around other animals & distractions. You are being taught how to deal with signs that many people don't see until they have issues. Personally im not surprised your pup has had enough, you say he has been bullied many times at the park, these are warnings signs that you should pay attention too even the best mannered pup/dog gets feed up with bullies & may react & it seems the time has come . It seems his enjoyment of going out isn't as fun for him as you think so if it was me i would be looking at just walking & other options where your pup isn't going to be bullied each time. I see to many wonderful dogs ruined by free for alls at the dog park & people just don't pay attention to the warnings signs until thee own dog steps up to the plate & then it becomes an OMG moment
  2. RC energy 4800 plus what you normally feed. I use it on my very active dogs plus certain dogs in boarding where weight maintenance is an issue. What i like is i don't need to feed umpteen cups just 1/2 max plus there normal meat etc etc. I to have breeds prone to bloat so very careful in not wanting to feed alot . In extreme cases i feed ice cream & porridge etc etc . As mentioned though watch how the dog accepts the fat content .RC energy for example is very high in fat so if you are adding lamb flaps & the likes would be a total overload . Lamb flaps give our dogs the runs . Pancreatitis can be created by to much fat & can be a worse evil than being a tad skinny
  3. Head held with lead & food held infront . His head wont get lighter so its a acse of train now to make life easier down the track . The method with lead/jaw works fine with my guys but will be harder with your saints . Its more of a support method used but i would be encouraging alertness to bait or squeaker soft toy at this age & the wiggles wouldn't worry me as long as pup is happy . As its a giant breed standing still for to long just isn't what there designed for at present so i make sure with my large breeds there not over stacked & i encourage self stacking & if a leg is slightly out i don't fuss. Pups often stack themselves better especially large/giant & we are just there to finish off assist. Use a mirror or reflective mirror to practice your stacking & see what works .doesn't work ,Its the only way to understand what the judge sees & get a feel for the end result
  4. I don't think its case of convincing vets but owners who feel the dog is better in a vets care as they can monitor better. We had a dog with parvo back in the 80's & this method was the norm back then but the vet only did it with clients WHO could follow the rules at home & was at home to give the care & the precautions required to not risk other dogs in the area. There is no way our girl would have survived if no one was home to care for her in which case she would have been better at the vets by the same token recognizing the signs & getting vet treatment asasp is the major issue ,people leave it to late
  5. I would pick dog up & leave intros to the next day .
  6. We have had people board there dogs whilst trying to sort out if its there dogs. The owners new who had complained & went & told the people in question they where trying some new methods & could they let them now if there still barking. On 2 occasions they have still complained another occasion it was done with the councils full knowledge as the neighbour had become an issue . Can you ask other neighbours if they bark ??
  7. Is he being paranoid or are you being paranoid & i say this in a non judgmental way. I think to many owners see things for more than what they are & then start to create things that aren't there. They feel guilty they have to go to work & feel there dogs can't cope without them . I often think the owners should video themselves as to what issues the may be creating before they leave . We get alot of boarders in on SA meds & generally you can pick the vets which have prescribed the meds before the owners say so. The reasons there on meds Hmm interesting & the dogs show no signs at all of issues whilst in boarding infact perfectly normal dogs. We have had 1 or 2 dogs in that truly are SA issues & there issues had to be well managed but i agree that its over diagnosed in the "true meaning".
  8. I have owned Setters for nearly 20 years & you need to teach your puppy to switch off . At 7 months i would say way to much & keep in mind Setter maturity to Ridgie maturity is very different in body . Some Setter lines are very slow & you won't get what you want sooner. I would spend more time training for grooming at this age than anything else
  9. Ask the breeder they are the ones that now what suits there breed the best . There diet chart should cover the ages . Give them the first call & discuss what they think & what will/won't work. Raw doesn't suit every dog no matter how much you wish to feed it & not all meats are ideal for some breeds so do your homework first .
  10. And understanding dog laws & rules & a how children should interact with dogs. Have the fun stuff but have the educational stuff there too . Carrying poo bags.picking up,off leash park rules & do this in a friendly but as a dog owner these are things you must now . I would be more inclined to avoid the jumpy castles & make stalls family friendly so all members can learn ,good ownership can start very early on . Obedience demos are always great but there often adults only doing the stuff ask clubs if they now of kids locally who are trialling so that kids are involved & see people there own age doing things .
  11. Chloe08 i would say a Goldie could be more laid back than a Std Poodle BUT like i mentioned before it then comes down to the other traits of having to live with it. There are breeds which are active & switch off & breeds that active & harder to live with & above all you have to actually want to live with the breed you pick . Personally from a boarding kennel owner point of view & being a gundog lover i find many Goldies to be to soft & needy . We board alot of Labs varying from delightful to i don't now how they live with them ,this comes down to right pup & training of course but some Labs you couldn't pay me to live with especially as they enjoy swimming in the water bowls all the time . Whilst many people will say there ideal & fit the biddable box etc etc it doesn't mean there easy to live with .I guess many people fell because there claim to fame is being a Guide dogs it doesn't mean they all come out of the same mould . I help show Labs & there well trained dogs with respect but even within the batch i show there are those that give all they can to work & those that are so lazy its frustrating . So keeping in mind what you wish to do with your dog of the retrievers i would go Flat Coat but i do find Goldies & flatties to be barkers but i find Rough Collies to be worse but i will say my view on this is based on a selfish obedience competitors who find it funny for the RC to bark non stop at trials As you live in Vic there are some big shows coming up,for example from the Gundog point of view the Gundog club champ show in Nov gets dogs Aussie wide & alot of variation & would be a great place to see the many breeds there ,The Melb cup cluster shows are also on the Mon & cup Tuesday & again has massive all breeds numbers & will have every breed you can imagine over those 2 days if your not in a rush . Have you considered a Brittany Spaniel ??
  12. You say you want 2 are look looking at same sex?? What will be your plan with a male/female & in season?? If you buy 2 would they be your breeding pair & when you breed are you planning to keep to breed on with? What are you council restrictions on numbers & breeding permits?? These are all things you need to work with first as well. I would suggest you forgot about breeding as such until you have actually ventured into the world of truly understanding the breed . Being around them & then understanding then enough to breed sound dogs for the betterment is very different. I have been involved with my heart breeds for over 20 yrs now & yet to breed them because there are already awesome breeders out there doing an amazing job & i support them by owning & showing there efforts & when i do decide to breed them i will have a wealth of knowledge to support me. Join the Bulldog club in your state ,go & attend shows & understand the breed standard back to front & inside out & the only way to do this is to see dogs regularly & have good mentors that will tell you what makes each dog good & what its faults are & what lines to avoid ,embrace . A BB will tell you about the 24 hr commitment with raising a litter for the first few weeks learn all about the bad side espicailly if you have kids & want them involved they also need to understand the things that can go wrong including losing there pet whilst whelping . We get emails weekly from people saying we want a litter so the kids can experience pups but often no one has considered the worse case scenario on kids aswell if it goes wrong .Puppy raising isn't always that joyful experience people think * many foret that your social life goes out the window when pups are on the ground . So my suggestion is after hearing about all the what can go wrong & you still feel you wish to head down the path do so with good mentors & make sure you do do right by the breed. As you would be aware they are on a special list in the UK which has been a nightmare for the breed & breeders here are very careful to avoid the same path & sadly BB are one of the worst breed for scammers & people breeding them due to the high prices they can fetch & the breed then suffers .
  13. The first to realize is there are already plenty of good breeders out there breeding for the betterment of the breed so you need to decide what will make you better than them. When we registered our prefix we had shown our dogs for many years before breeding was even considered infact it was the last thought on our mind as there was so much to learn & we wanted to learn all about our breed.line & so much more before we even considered bringing pups into the world Do you plan to just breed them or show aswell? Breeding isn't a hobby its a serious commitment that comes with many ups & downs & understanding all the legal aspects that come with selling pups. Breeders are very careful & i would imagine the good Bulldog breeders are even more careful due to the fact so many people want to breed them "just Because" .It doesn't do the breed any favours just having litters & people buying pups expect more than just a prefix especially in the world of Bulldogs . It isn't about starting somewhere as such ,when a breeder sells you a main registered pup they also have expectations & being a breeder has many responsibilities & that is something you will learn, not every pup should be breed from .Good ethical breeders already now the hardship in this breed & fully understand what they need to do to head forward but like every breed the bad eggs give the breed a bad rap so breeders take care with what they sell & what people want to do with there pups
  14. I can honestly say we have never had anyone says this ,the only time the word shows comes up is when they say they just want a family desexed pet . The biggest issue we have have is how impatient puppy buyers are becoming & them expecting breeders to have pups all the time ready just for them . We find educating people to buy the right pup for life is often the hardest concept to get through
  15. The photo's really don't show anything but a Black/Tan can be poorly marked . Generally the poorly mark/rich colour B/T have a brighter marking around there anus . As the standard goes if a B/T then yes her markings would be a fault in what the standard asks for but it can still be a legit B/T . It simply would mean the colour is there in the lines . Just like some tri colours you will get faint tan points as its there in the lines just not strong enough in breeding for that colour
  16. Many of the Newf people i now will use hand towels & sew/attach a neck cord
  17. Cavs are sporting spaniels breed for hunting ,they have drive like any breeds does . Each dog is an individual anyway so there is no guarantee a blanket method of training will work even within a breed. I don't now of any dog that wouldn't work for food or attention ,attention is part of training anyway is just a case of the method you use & have savvy you are in reading your dog ,even working dogs want to be loved
  18. People pack/unpack in stages ,walking dog & gear at the same time isn't what we generally do & keep in mind the more crap you take then packing the car can become an issue if set items need to go in first. Also keep in mind pushing gear on a cross country terrain isn't easy especially with a dog in tow & maneuvering around peoples stuff & controlling the dog . It comes down to how much money you want to spend ,i use the fold up trolleys for crates & the ezy ups also fit on them ,i find them great for all grounds & easy to pack away. I also have show trolleys but there not cheap & some aren't designed for alot of gear to go in & push.
  19. Some locals in our area have had issues with morons bringing Pitbulls in to attack live stock so they have brought in shooters. I would alert neighbours & council, you not accusing anyone of anything as you have no idea who or what did it but a warning of be aware goes along way . Whether it be a sick human who thoughtt it was funny or dog issue
  20. There can be many causes & i would certainly be looking at what you feed & that includes all treats, chews, bones & anything else it gets . As dog age some just can't handle some foods anymore . I also have dogs that when they have pulled muscles or are sore they get the runs so i head off to my bowen person . Add pumpkin to the diet the best to assist in firming stools far better than rice .
  21. Common sense . You can read many things about puppy raising but you don't need a degree to do it many stuff out there these days makes things so much harder when it shouldn't be. Ask your breeder what the pup isbeing feed so you can get food now. Agree with checking the shed & make sure the pen is high enough that pup can't get over . Don't spoil pup because its cute, that cute pup will grow very quickly & what was fun at 12 weeks won't be at 6.12 months so consider anything that you encourage & what the consequences may be down the track because untraining bad habits is hard work & that is where many people fail . Both discuss your guidelines & stick to it,All members must be on the same page to ensure pup learns quickly without confusion .a pup won't love you more because you allow it to get away with murder . Teaching off is very easy that happens in your general daily activities from day 1 ,Boxers are out there & you can't take away that Boxer way but you body language & what you encourage & accept will make or break it. My large breed puppies are always allowed to have "there time" to be what they are but they also learn very quickly about time out & calm that also includes guests & how they approach your dogs. Many just want to kiss & cuddle & razz up the pup but from day 1 they will learn this correct because everyone does it & the pup gets rewarded for it ,Like you say you rellies 40 kg Boxer isn't fun so just consider what it does & what annoys you the most & .
  22. I think people forget the OP first dog a Cavie is a hunting breed & a true sporting spaniel so if your going to suggest breeds due to hunting history the Cavie is a no no & yes i have seen plenty of cavies with good sporting traits & hunt well . My first question would be how much exposure has your Cavie had to big dogs & how does it interact with them.Does it enjoy the rough & tumble or prefer a more laid back playmate . Something to keep in mind if your plan is to have the 2 dogs live happily together. I agree with others the 2 breeds you have selected are like chalk & cheese to live with so maybe list the pros/cons of the 2 breeds that make you want to own them . Going to a dogshow would be a good start aswell not only will you see the breeds in public it will also make you decide what you prefer or maybe see other breeds you never considered .
