Walk, Pace, Or Canter. Best Combination?
Dogsfevr replied to sandgrubber's topic in General Dog Discussion
pacing is a lazy gait & the dogs often end up sore,i don't allow pacing ,when i bike the do so in correct gait . My dogs always bike straight into a natural gait & pick the speed that suits them ,known have tried to run . -
Byford Animal Quarantine Facility-perth Wa
Dogsfevr replied to wayrod's topic in General Dog Discussion
Perth has always been booked out but the facility was brought by the Cohuna syndicate many years ago & has been leased back. The fire last year was never a threat to the place but there has been other issues. The residients have complained for years over the noise but that certainly isn't the only reason nor do i believe the fire . The dogs last year during the fire where released to home quarantine . I now plenty of people unable to get dogs into Perth due to being booked out as generally the South African dogs & long termers got sent here -
no point getting help. You have 3 entire bitches its all about management now

No tethering here & never will .Good handling of dogs is easy ,you either have it or you don't restraining dogs is a convenience for groomers that has now suddenly been used as a safety option . Dogs still panic when using a grooming arm & even with a safety collar injuries can happen & any groomer is aware of this. As for being open to all to view this is one area i would have red flags for safety because people watching, talking around dogs can be dangerous especially people who bring children & the obvious when the dogs get excited to see there owners. Any person who has had a dog in a grooming harness that sees there owners will have also seen it go crazy whilst restrained Yes i have seen dogs panic. I would never convince myself that those tools offer great safety . AS for lifting i guess each to there own there .again i have seen dogs panic on hydraulic tables whilst they go up. I use varying heights & my own dogs weigh over 36 Kg so its all about the posture & support . Back issues is one of the biggest reasons groomers quit so it comes down to wht works for people & how to manage

First Obedience Class - Wouldn't Stop Barking!
Dogsfevr replied to Puppynovice's topic in Puppy Chat
When your out & pups behaves badly what do you do. Pick up pup.lean down to pup ?? I have been in classes with dogs like yours & its hard for everyone ,one was so bad that us as a class ended up asking if it could be moved becuase you couldn't hear anything & it became the hr from hell . The dog/handler needed more direction than given. Personally i would find an area that is active but away like others have said & take a chair & sit there calmly whilst life goes past . I would even do this at training ,go a tad earlier & sit calmly & when the dog feels relaxed join the class.if over the top i would walk out for a time out but making sure your working the dog at this time on focusing & not encouraging crazy . Above all ask before you next class for assistance .tell them the issue you had last week & the fact your not sure how to manage it & that you feel for the others in your class -
Personally i find Goldies more a lazy breed so i don't see it as a surprise that at 6 years she may be slowing down . All my dogs when in exercise get Bowen to ensure there injury free . But i do agree that some dogs are designed to run & others aren't . Maybe cut it down to alternative days . Maybe her recovery rate is as great anymore . As for other breeds depends on the surface you run on . Viszlas ,Weis & a number of other breeds would be fine but you still need to live with it so i guess it comes down to how important the jogging part is in relation to ease of living with the chosen breed

there is also the Lakeland & Welsh Terriers if they like that look aswell.

Mini Schnauzers should be very social dogs to all, they are territorial & will let you now someone is at the door . They need clipping every 6/8 weeks & regular brushing . I do agree with looking at options that will aslo suit the traveling & the type of areas, low shedding has its advantages but it also has its pitfalls. The biggest thing iw ould say from the breeds that are listed is there like chalk & cheese so it depends on what they based there liking them on . We do groom alot of Irish Terriers owned by older people & they are all super dogs & certainly have an easier coat to maintain .

Did use it & the dogs started to itch like crazy & couldn't keep weight on.

I say never go with your heart always with your head . How to narrow it down. What are your expectations from the second dog. What activities will you be able to do together or want the dogs to do together . I would say your heart isn't in the Boxer by what you wrote . So it would seem the next too are what your looking at . Has your Rotti meet Frenchies ?? I ask this because my guys see them at shows & in boarding but actually dislike them (not fight) They actually don't deal with there snorting noises well & there sometimes attitude boldness. I think there great dogs but mine wouldn't enjoy there company

This Might Be A Stupid Question But Are Fleas Penalized
Dogsfevr replied to mixeduppup's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes judges do ,after all they are expected to touch these dogs & who wants fleas crawling over you whilst judging. Judges often comment about people who also don't wash there dogs . Its amazing how many people don't can never figure that out -
all the working dogs i new where rehomed by the employees & often went in house with families . Sounds an odd scenario even the ones that didn't make the grade where rehomed by the employees & they often had waiting list sas the dogs are trained
-
No . But getting more feed up with the crappy emails people send for an inquiry. We don't pick homes by email anyway they must phone or come visit or if there not decided on the breed we send them to shows

I doubt any reputable Mini breeder will contact you with a post like this ,it doesn't do you any favors .

Cleo Just Scared Me So Much!
Dogsfevr replied to dotdashdot's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I think the vet saying no apparent signs is a worry ,those signs can certainly be bloat typical . Bloat can be a scary issue & some dogs show no apparent signs to varying signs & those symptons could be a sign of bloat or simple gas /belly ache not something i would rule out in another scenario. Bloat can be a silient killer & often the under estimated signs are to late especially in the evenings. Our last dog who died of bloat played with is teddy & walked into the vet to cheerfully greet everyone but we new he wasn't right & bloat was the obvious choice. He had twisted beyond help & even the vets where amazed to see him but not chocked . owning bloat breeds we now that signs aren't text book -
We tell our clients who come for boarding/grooming. We are tactful but if they don't like it doesn't worry us they can't say they weren't told. We board alot of dogs with issues because there owners thought fat wasn't an issue until it all goes wrong & then they do the poor me sob . We see so many diabetic dogs these days that its scary & all because in most cases the owners where to selfish to realize there slowly killing there so called beloved dog BUT making any comment before this should involve a basic chat to make sure there isn't a history there . Like we say to people they don't get fat on thin air so if no one is over feeding then they must monitor for health issues . Although the funniest i hear is the people who comment about fat dogs because there barrel chested ,they just see round & presume fat ,they don't think what the chest shape should be for some breeds . Then there are people who say some dogs are to lean many of the lean to extreme are very long in loin .We board a JR who is very long in loin, vets have told them every visist it needs fattening up,the dog is a good weight if it wasn't so long in loin but because it is it looks skinny & no amount of feeding up will make it look fat

Depends on what the smell is Minis don't have an odour as such so its depends on whether its there ears, feet or the stuff your bathing in or even the food

Your pup is being normal . This is a scenario we often inform puppies owners with older dogs but many seem to think it wont happen. You need to cater for to ages & an older dog that has lived a quiet pup free life Buy a puppy pen so your pup can happily amuse it self not in a time out fashion but in a fashion it can be a pup & act its age . You need to also cater for the older the dog & give it a safe area . You can yell till the cows come home but pup needs to be educated & you need to give the pup the time & effort it wants & needs you need to become its playmate & also teach pup independence to play on its own as the scenario isn't going to change Chi will get older & the cavie pup simply thinks it has a playmate

Some coats never return after clipping & if you want to YOU MUST put in alot of work & generally the dog was clipped off in the first place as owners didnt want to hand strip to start with. We hand strip all breeds but generally we end up suggesting the owners clip as they don't do any work in between & we can only do so much in two hrs & over doing it in that time frame can irritate the skin . Slick & easy stones are the best to work on the coats ,i stripped the coats whilst in the bath wet to get alot more out . Mars can be a useful tool but used incorrectly can also cut coats so care must be taken . You can buy a nit comb from the chemist which will get alot of coat out too . The key is you must do it a few times a week to get a coat back & that is all areas not just the easy bits . Some coats just never come back & we will tel owners that despite there efforts they won't get what they want

Extreme Anxiety When Being Groomed
Dogsfevr replied to CathyM's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Jed i don't agree with your comments about patience .As a groomer i am very patient as are most in the profession & grooming is all about handling & making the experience good. A novice person can teach worse habits & instil more panic than good . The dog needs direction & yes the owner can do alot to help but if there not confident with clippers/scissors & technique then the whole confidence package can be doomed before they start . Good handling is all about knowing when to try harder & when to take a step back but also understanding your tools & above all how to multi task with two hands & a dog that doesn't co operate so all parties survive safely. We groom dogs where novices started out & most are nightmares because the owners had no clue & the dogs where given no direction & retraining them takes enormous patience . Most elderly dogs when groomed are more feral than any abused dog especially when there hearing & eye sight goes . Its unfortunate that many seem to feel groomers are non feeling people our industry copes alot from people who think our job is easy & not worth what we charge or the time & effort we put in. -
Yes they can

People do it all the time take dogs leave them unattended to go shopping Personally i think these people are irresponsible idiots without any thought to there dogs & break the obvious rule of having there dogs under effective control .

There is no set time . We have had bicthes we mated at day 3 to day 30 each one is different so its important not to follow the general rule but treat each bitch differently
