  1. nope,we tell our puppy owners not to & its at there own risk & certainly wouldn't give it to a puppy . It also costs big dollars . We no longer heartworm treat as the risk is small compared to the chemicals but i appreciate some areas you can't risk it,when we did heartworm we did daily & still would do daily although we did do liquid for a number of years .
  2. Yep your breeder should be the one best to assist with charts, tools & advice
  3. Toys breeds do have a higher incidence of dental issues & its often diet related as everyone feeds them little things & make it easier for them. If there loose they need to come out ,they will fallout themselves & just because you think the dog isn't showing signs doesn't mean it isn't ,it will be eating differently to adapt to what it can/can't do with those teeth .
  4. This sunday the Bull Terrier club of WA have there champ show at the Canine grounds starting at 12.30 ,maybe head down & just see what is out there .Bullies aren't shown alot so this would be your chance to see them in large numbers
  5. I would be more worried about making sure the Kerry knows the social ladder rules, your brave taking on two terriers especially with a Kerry Blue . Any other breeds i would say yep let them work it out but with a Kerry i would be keeping a good eye on its interactions with your dog an any dog ,lets face it there not the best at sharing with other dogs & yes i have owned two & they where never left with our other dogs when unattended
  6. I would also factor into your plan maybe moving overseas ,the bigger the dog the more expensive it becomes to ship them & the costs are going up & up .so if shipping to very large breeds start saving . Having an energetic breed isn't about exercising them infact thinking longer walks will make them livable is not true.any dog will walk for how ever long you want, making it happy the other 22 hrs is the main factor. GSP i have alot to do with energy levels are nothing but living with them is another thing they can be insanely needy & not cope on there own very much like Weis, when the right scenario works there awesome dogs but they can also be your worse nightmare Pointers are far easier to live with & quieter . The problem with Std Schnauzers is often the people that get them want a Mini but in the next size up,they are not a Mini but a true working dog that needs owners who can offer them that respect, they are truly loyal to there owners .This breed is too smart for its own good & make a wonderful all purpose dog & thrive at all dog sports, like any working breed they learn quickly & get frustrated quickly & will out smart any owner who doesn't respect them. They are very agile & so quick on there feet & used as police dogs in Europe & of course Cancer sniffer dogs in the US plus many other jobs . As for Setters they wouldn't fit into the OPs weight range ,would be rare to get a Setter under 30 kg . Depending on where ypu may end u overseas you copuld have a far better choice of breeds that we don't have here ,like in t he US the Picardys are wonderful dogs
  7. no your not & don't let anyone make you second guess. We run kennels with opening hrs & have learnt after 23 yrs that pandering to clients doesn't end with success & the same few are the ones that take it for granted every time. We will certainly work in with people in special scenarios but it still must fit in with the the dogs in boarding best interests as the safety & care of our clients dogs comes first.
  8. A good under coat rake, comb & slicker brush is all you need. I would suggest they train the dog to be brushed on a table ,yes an extra expense but worth every cent & makes grooming so easy & simple & saves your back plus ts great for checking the dog over . If they don't want to invest in a table whilst pup is still little place a heavy duty mat on top of the crate & brush pup there ,its crucial from day 1 to teach good manners & wanting there pants & tail brushed
  9. In the last few years the requests from people are getting weirder & weirder & the arrogance of many when you explain calmly back why some things can't happen is appalling . I honestly don't now where people are getting feed the info to ask such questions or expectations. We get alot who ask to spend the day like its a dog zoo ,i often wonder why people think is . We are very much about meet & greets but times are certainly changing
  10. Your biggest Thankyou would be making sure you do your part of the deal & making the effort to help yourself . Many breeders do what this person does, spends hrs helping ,our biggest reward is when the hrs of effort we put in is rewarded by the new owner making just as big an effort . Its makes us feel like doing it over & over again & that where not wasting our time . A gift is a lovely gesture put seriously just saying Thankyou for helping me get started means just as much
  11. Maybe its the way you explained it . Don't get me wrong i think you are ticking all the right boxes but sometimes i think we can be a tad "rude" in the way we explain things to people who don't understand & it becomes a big deal instead of a very simple deal .I personally would kennel the dog aswell,we board alot of dogs the same as yours with no issues at all.both parties are aware & the dog is not placed in a situation ,Would be much quieter & to be honest i think you are going to stress so much that the dog is going to feel it & be worse off plus you either want to go for this event or its all about the dog ,i guess if its going to be all about the dog then i would say don't go & make a scene & let your partner enjoy the time there . Your dog will always have issues so you will need to decide on many more occasions whether life stops for an event or too because of the dog or looking at other ways to deal with it . I guess you are lucky you can take the dog & have it crated in a room ,not many people would agree with that especially as there is a responsibility of care to dog & people attending
  12. All my big guys sleep in my room ,they are crate trained as pups & then move onto big dog privileges,i am happy with sharing my bed but my boy has a big dog bed on the floor which he loves to sleep in . I would consider your boy doesn't quite understand what is expected of him now Do you nap during the day & if so where is the dog ??
  13. If i feed my dogs by those charts they would starve to death . Word of warning don't become paranoid about ratios & weight, seen far to many owners feed what charts say & the result sick dogs that are under weight & owners who don't seem to want to adjust the ratio because everything they read says do this that. Raw is good ,its not the be all end all & doesn't suit every dog . Be careful with coconut oil ,i feed it but dogs can lose weight quickly at first on it until the system readjusts. I wouldn't go cold turkey ,not far in the pup if its tummy isn't ready for the big change . Also keep in mind i gather you liked the quality & health of the breeders dogs & where happy with what they feed. Some breeder guarantee there puppies on t he diet suggested & require consultation if being changed. Keep your breeder involved & ask them about diet from there experience, there are foods on that chart i would never feed my breed due to it causing other issues that many people are unaware of on forums
  14. If your dogs are clean at home & in there crate they should be spotless in the trailer . I travel mine in comfort .i like comfy supportive beds & bedding seasonal appropriate. Leaking shouldn't be an issue but some trailers do get water in often sucked up via the vents . My tricky 6 berth is great in rain & i have coated breeds although 99% of the time the dogs are in the car ,gear in the trailer & they sleep in it over night if required
  15. I would just put more bedding in that snuggles around ,small doesn't mean it feels the cold anymore & sometimes we just mentally presume they do because there small.
  16. Yes i have ,its painful & certainly takes its toll on the dog BUT its location can also make it easier or worse My boy had it in the end of his spine/base of his tail & it affected him in many ways, namely not being able to use his tail so it made toileting harder & getting up & down. He was a 4okg dog ,short walks where a must to keep him active not only for mental health but keeping him as fit as possible,he had Bowen treatment every 3 weeks which made a massive difference because looking after the healthy parts of his body enabled him to be functional, getting up/down took a toll on his front so i needed to look after his front.his bed was a mattress because when sleeping he needed to spread out & the mattress allowed him to stretch & not have to curl nor climb up/down. Pain killer wise we didn't go overboard because he couldn't stomach them ,we found in summer we could cut back to alternate days or less & in winter on occasions needed to increase but we still kept it minimal. Arnica tablets where also used & arnica/comfrey cream in the affected areas & worked a treat ,we also used heat packs . I worked from home with also made it easier to keep an eye on him .
  17. As long as we have organizations that encourage random cross breeds to be created they will be & then they can say there part *** & all should be great . We don't need more breeds created we already have enough to do any job,the sad part now is every tom, dick & harry cross what ever & claim it has a purpose .
  18. I have shown Pointers for years all good eaters but not motivated on food rewards ,a few really enjoy there toy rewards but in general thrive more on human reward
  19. I now some people in Vic that have them they brought them back from the UK but they are whelping boxes not something i would use as beds as such ,depends on the breed they have but they will take alot of room up
  20. I think what ever dog you get you need to factor out the other dogs & look at what you want/can offer a dog on its own, your dog irrespective of having "maybe" suitable playmates still needs to learn to live on its own & be happy with its own company otherwise you may set yourself up for failure or another hard work dog . All the Aussies i have been around have had super natures & great with kids & bomb proof & happy to go off with who ever .
  21. yoga mats are great but i would get vet bed for him dries amazingly quickly but if hes wet the moisture goes through the bed but the top part stays dry, also great for camping humans as its warm or cool .
  22. What treats are you using ,is the dog a food driven dog or just eats it . For example our show Greyhounds enjoyed food but it wasn't a passion for them ,a soft toy or human talk/touch meant more to them . Alot of Mastiff we board i wouldn't call food driven either .they enjoy there food but again not a passion . But think outside the box for treats
  23. You need to change things ,you can't feel guilty you just need to make your old boys life more fulfilling in his own way . He can't do long walks & it isn't fair on him ,it also isn't fair on the other dog ,both dogs have different needs. Are you saying your old dog gets stressed if you left him ?? Our oldies here get introduced to a new routine that suits them & they couldn't care about being left because they have there own time that suits them . Dogs get old so you have to adjust the young one still has to live a fulfilling life so you simply have to make time for both
