Cairns are fab with kids never read any info saying they aren't ,one of the most popular breeds in junior handlers
-
Border terriers are already promoted in Perth ,they where shown often in the past just not now . If you want show quality you will need to look East but im fairly certain all are very careful where there breeding stock goes & if they send show quality will expect it to be shown . I would suggest still heading down to shows to see the hand stripped breeds because as a groomer i can tell you now many people don't do the work on the easiest of coats & if you want to show then pet work compared to show work is not a easy job as rolling the coat needs to be done correctly & the seasons play havoc with coats ,it is work so best not to under estimate the work ,pet coats can get away with less effort

Borders whilst great dogs do need coat work ,she will need to work on the coat weekly as I gather going to the groomers is not an option . They are a stubborn breed BUT do learn ,friend has two that excel in tracking . I would suggest getting a Border Terrier from the east . As to working Springers we board a fee and there not for the faint hearted ,the ones with owners dedicated to there needs awesome ,the ones who brought them as they have less coat than the showlines a disaster . like the border terrier with coat I would also look at a Cairn terrier awesome little dogs ,great with kids and can see them in Perth . A visit to a dog show would be a good thing Also Schipperke could work ,they don't have the looks everyone likes but great hardy dogs

Pain Relief or Supplements for joints
Dogsfevr replied to YOLO's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Its trial & error when it comes to supplements .i have used some with no difference at all, some have not agreed with my dogs & others fine. We use bowen massage ,red light treatment ,Equissage hand massage & rock tape . I will also use pain relief like someone else also mentioned i prefer quality time & if that means a shorter life in the older years i have no issues accepting that. My current dog nearly 14 started meloxicam last year ,originally only got it 3 times a week minimum dose ,this year it is now daily but well below the minimum dose he has all his life received massage etc etc . There are also some great dog liniments that can be rubbed on sore areas -
To be honest you would expect that ,the dogs are there own company 24/7 & i presume she is getting another dog to be a friend for the other one . What it comes down to is each dog deserves time & effort which she will need to manage anyway as the older Lab is going to get older & the younger one will require more effort & more time to keep its brain active so it needs individual time which is very easy as it can't go on the longer walks the older dog would do(i presume she walks them ) So the pup will need to be happy to stay home on its own whilst the older dog sticks to its normal & the older dog will want time out from the puppy anyway ,easy going doesn't mean a match & some dogs can be to laid back & get bullied so she needs to watch how the older dog deals with the pup but im a firm believer anyway on older dogs deserve time out & peace & quiet & the youngsters need to learn to be independent & happy to play outside on there own Most people get two because it makes life easier for them & they feel less guilty that there on there own so she needs to be more interesting than the other dog . Also depends what the other dog did that makes her say it bonded more with that dog & not her, depends on the kind of relationship she has with the current dog .

I'm surprised that the breeder didn't sell with a sales agreement to spay age ,there are very few Mini breeders that don't sell already spayed or with an age frame and refund a spay bond but 2 is a good age
-
Most will enter both unless they plan to show elsewhere or may have another breed over the specialty season. Im gathering this is in NSW during the Royal Show so many clubs hold two shows to make the travel worthwhile with eastern state guests

Minis aren't stubborn not sure why people say that and certainly don't require a firm hand ,they are people pleasers and respond very well to pleasing there owners naturally the stds are the ones who could be called stubborn but that's generally due to owners getting it wrong in training and under estimating there desire to learn . The 3 sizes are very different any Schnauzer breeder knows that and advises as such ,any companion animal will be different to a working dog ,owners who get it right will have an enjoyable breed. Been involved with Mini s for over 30 yrs ,shown Stds and groomed Giants all very different and rightly so .
-
The 3 sizes of schnauzers are all very different ,the only common factor is the looks . The minis where originally ratters but now mainly a companion animal that thrives in all dog sports ,easy going ,intelligent and very easy to train . Stds and Giants are working dogs and as such need owners prepared to do the work in the teenage faze and be prepared to keep them mentally worked for life . Stds are a good all round dog when it comes to dog sports ,biggest pitfall they are smarter than most owners who don't give them the respect they deserve ,devoted to there family, great guard dogs and loyal to the end . Giants again very much a working dog having been used in police and military. bright and again great learners . The biggest pitfall most std /giant owners make is thinking there getting a mini in another size ,this is not true .If your happy to own a Rotti,Dobe ,GSD then a std / Giant could be a great match ,if those breeds are not something you would want then maybe not the size for you mainly due to that working background. Obviously any breed needs training some just require more effort to enjoy living with i would own a Giant over a Std

Setter compete regularly in Obedience & can do very well . There is no height standard for Irish Setters & they are still a heavy dog to lift for example so if weight & ease is a major part then certainly there are other gundog breeds . As mentioned Nova's who do very well in all dog sports ,still have coat but not a major amount

We just stalk them with the camera (good lense).A puppy being natural is so much nicer

Complaint about a dog breeder (Advice needed)
Dogsfevr replied to nathansmith's topic in General Dog Discussion
I guess this is a good exercise in what you would do as a breeder ? First off no animal is guaranteed to be suitable for breeding . I gather as you brought with the intention of breeding you did a lot of homework as to why this breeder had the dogs you wanted and you ensured all health testing was for the breed done. As a future breeder you would now that even the best hip /elbow scores is a tool no guarantee that they won't produce it so without knowing the history of said parents it's hard to say . Cruciate can be breed or created issue you would also know using the word hereditary is not true and generally a word a crappy vet say. What to do ,your breeder has offered you an option that you have declined . As a future breeder this is a con of breeding but again I'm sure you have educated yourself in what can go wrong in breeding and it's not always success even with the best efforts . Hard to say without knowing the breed and even what registry it's with if from the state control as you would already be a member you would be aware of the process and what the state body deals with . As to whether your breeder said that well I often find there is two sides to the story . As to an expensive puppy money should mean nothing especially if you where planning to be an ethical breeder ,purchasing a pup is not about cheap or expensive, breeding is an expensive hobby . As mentioned many factors to consider ,was the breeder given the option of a second opinion for the issues ? Has the elbow issues been verified by one of the main readers ? What grading where the cruciate wad ? Generally breeders sell with a puppy sales contract outlining there process,as mentioned insurance should cover a lot if you took it out on your expensive puppy . If you want money back then it will be small claims court -
The breed was established here but I don't think anyone has continued with them .They where shown regularly . There not exotic there a breed of dog and you don't base your decision on who will buy puppies . its either a breed you are committed to owning no matter what the outcome or your not ,if you plan to keep breeding them then you will need to bring semen in or new dogs in over long term or simply breed the two for multi litters and stop , i would suggest that the costs to bring them in will be much more buy then .

Would you get a second opinion now or???

Most vets do not believe in alternative treatments like chiro, bowon, acupunture etc etc hence they will rarely recommend one as they don't now any . They will prescribe on going meds instead . I head to our bowen person before the vet & they don't give meds just treat the muscle injury . Has your dog had the runs ?? Also contact horse clubs especially those that do dressage, those horses will be treated by Bowen or like minded treatments & red light theraphy . I now Bowen is someone what new to NZ & there are people studying it .I do now someone As to rest all the treatments my dogs get light walking is encourage just like humans sitting around doing nothing can make the issue worse unless of course its a fracture for example -
Most who show I the All Breeds ring just use a snake chain or similar style in fabric ,6 ft lead is way to long for the All Breeds ring ,if your planning to show in both rings then the GSD club will most likely stick speciality collars leads

I have shown a few Pekes ,very under estimated pets

Find a dog chiropractor or Bowen massage. -
I would be back at the vets & getting a poop sample tested . There could be numerous reasons but long term runs & lethargic pup is not normal . Pumpkin is better than rice but what ever the issue is the pup needs to go on to bland food as its gut will be overwhelmed . Yoghurt can be added. Have you spoken to the people who sold you the pup?? In there paperwork did it list when pup was last wormed & with what product?? Pup is most likely due for its next vacc but we wouldn't vaccinate a poorly pup so this is something you need to discuss with your vet . Make sure to question the vets diagnosis ,don't let them fob you off . What was pup feed prior to you getting it ??What where you feeding it? Was it an active pup when you visited it before coming home or did you not see the pup & litter mates??
-
I would ask your vet to show you the evidence to back up there poster . Vets want to lock you in to going to them, most charge a ridiculous price for the injection . we do not recommend it to our puppy owners and if they do it's at there own risk . We no longer heartworm as the risk is low ,we only used daily when we did and no issues at all .
-
you need a product that doesn't do heartworm ,The vet should have made that very clear if you are using the injection which most of us will never use or recommend
-
If they want a greyhound then look at a show line .Show line puppies also need homes and arent reared as racers . i did agility with one of our Greys, the others lived with our small dogs and trusted them 100 %. There are ex racers competing in agility ,sledding ,tracking

Make sure you ask lots of questions,Many of the vets that do board have no one staying over night . Make sure there is someone in attendance ,ask to see where there staying as often its just the cages & what toilet area they have not justa lead walk .
