Titre testing isntexpensive,If your vet is charging stupid prices ask why but most do because it makes owners feel vaccinating is cheaper . -
Anyone has a dog allergic to vaccination?
Dogsfevr replied to teddybeans's topic in General Dog Discussion
C7 does Lepto/corona virus which is required in only extreme high risk cases not for the average run of the mill pet. Police & search / rescue dogs where generally given it due to working in drains & other areas with a very high rat population . It can be a problem where there are large numbers of wild rats and dogs consuming the same food or water contaminated with rat urine. As a boarding kennel owner we view vacc records & its surprising how many vets use this vaccine & even more scary how many owners are clueless to what there dog is being given & ask no questions whats so ever before a vaccination . -
Anyone has a dog allergic to vaccination?
Dogsfevr replied to teddybeans's topic in General Dog Discussion
Plenty of dogs react to vaccinations the issue in Australia is there is no real way or reporting issues & the companies are not interested . We experienced the loss of 4 pups after there first vaccination many years ago .A first for us & our vets perplexed . After some talking in the area we realised we werent the only ones to loss puppies & the batch numbers where checked & yep an issue . Our vets where very proactive in trying to report but even they in the end where given the run around & the stupid answers to what these pups all died from but it was reported & logged. We have a few boarding clients whose dogs are an issue hence they titer test ,most reacted to the C5 which we don't use .Alot react to the C7 which vets do use in areas its not required . Personally your vets where numpties to even try the C5 again . We don't even do C5 with puppies -
two is not always better than one & anyone bringing in a second dog should always have a plan for the what ifs /What if they don't get along, what if we made a mistake ,what if things aren't going to plan . Transition wise we tell our owners bringing in a second dog that they can't be left alone together when no one is home . The older dog may not like its new buddy at first, older dog is entitled to having its normal safe space & pup needs to also be safe & have time out . Older dog ideally is well trained, has a good nature & potentially a great role model for the new pup & above all has been around other dogs & shown the desire to enjoy a new buddy . Ensure your breeder knows you have a current dog & make sure the pup selected shows the signs of being the right match

Diet is a personal choice but your breeder would have given you a diet chart for your dogs but what many people do is create there own version of comfort food for the dog because it makes them feel happier instead of looking at the breeds requirements . Good diet of essential fatty healthy acids, not likely to trigger pancreatitis & mindful of there naturally higher cholesterol needs. Chicken whilst fine lacks the EFA required to fuel a dog so if you want to home cook then you need to balance it with organs & vege to balance where it lacks .Roo is low fat & often hard to keep weight on ,find it average for coat quality as well so again it needs balancing . We feed dry,raw & veg to our Minis never had a skin issue .We don't feed Roo & chicken in small quantities . That is a long time frame for prednil especially if at full dose .You certainly don't have to do the full course but it must be weaned off correctly .Which colour is the tablets ??

Good basic grooming table - recommendations please
Dogsfevr replied to BDJ's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Or go to SACA i presume the dog shop is still there otherwise there is a very big show weekend coming up soon that may have vendors 31 May to the 2 June. Vebo have strong tables with removable arm but they are heavy tables -
Sorry but your info is not correct about being able to tell .Pups are smart followers ,people often question if there dog is deaf as they claim it doesn't listen to them & they have full hearing .The only way of knowing is BAER testing . I own a breed that requires BAER testing ,it is done early to ensure any before being home the status is known & ideally before the pup /s are fully sold

As mentioned exclusion has to be done with no meds. How long with both courses has she been on pred?? Exclusion diets vary in the thought process ,many say kangaroo but yours already gets roo. I would be inclined to go with the crocodile roll route for 6 weeks but during that time there is no bones,no treats no anything added. After that time you slowly add a new food . You can get a nutriscan test done that tells you food its likely to react too but ofcourse this based on food being the issue & it may not be . When you clip her does she itch ??. I would not use Apoquel as one of the side effects is increased Cholesterol & the drug works on suppressing the immune system . Cytopoint injection seems a better option but i would still try food elimation first . We have been involved with Minis since the very early 80's but have never had itchy skins . You haven't had any mulch laid recently or walk near mulch?

BAER testing just tells you they can hear ,they could be at the lower end or the higher but when done normally at 7/8 weeks off age prior to sale . It will tell you if deaf, hearing in both ears or just one . Some vets knock them out others don't cost of BAER can be very to realistic to very expensive & not an easy service to get done as it requires a specialist trained operator hence BAER testing aussie wide is far & few between & one travels for it .

Not many breed working lines which is what the OP is wanting ,in Setters there is a big difference in working lines & dual purpose show/working

Shes on prednil so ofcourse she is happy . Your vet should have explained fully the potential side effects ,your vet should have offered potential options .Im not a fan of vets that just send people of with prednil ,it is a drug with side effects . Minis are a breed are at higher risk of Pancreatitis & diabetes which can relate back to drug use ,hence why certain meds should really be a last resort when no options exist . Prednil & its family also affect the immune system hence we prefer to not add to the risk . I think you need to understand there doesn't have to be changes for a dog to have issues, dogs can react to things one has always used so we as owners need to think outside the box not just think nothings changed ,something has changed for her . I have a dog after 8 years who is allergic to chicken . It could be something flowering on her walk ,her diet isn't what we would consider ideal for a mini in the essential healthy fatty acids .Minis diet is very important to them compared due to naturally having a higher cholesterol level already which is normal but the reason they can be at higher risk for certain health issues. It could be the chicken,it could be the lamb ,it may not be food related at all. It could be the shampoo you use as again what was fine once can suddenly not suit know. If you use a groomer they may spray her in a new scented product

No way would I have a dog on prednisone for itching and given other alternatives I’m surprised the vet has put the dog on another long course . It would need to be the last choice for us and for a Mini Schnauzer .Some dogs never have side effects, some it’s a drug scenario of quality over quantity of life but potential long term side effects can be devastating. Sore dog will certainly chew ,poking and prodding will not show up reasons to chew . Some will chew a spot because the nerves tingle there but the soreness is elsewhere . Anal glands will make a dog chew . Dogs can react to current food ,new cleaning products, carpet cleaner ,dog coats ,change of grasses etc outside . Even a flea can make a dog itchy for some time after . Anxious dogs can chew ,change of home life So what do you feed

If shipping fees are an issue then NZ won’t be an option . Contact the working Gundog clubs . There are working Irish breeders in WA and Vic defiantly, ES I think are far and few between working lines . Was a working line GS in WA but don’t think he’s had a litter for many years
-
Actually I totally disagree . Its a human thing that people say dogs are social animals and the good old days was no different . Breeds and individuals are not a one box ticks all .
-
Why do you need to contact your state body . If he brought her as a pet and he’s not a member of any of the dog registries he just needs to follow his state law and there sold as pets . No big deal . If he is wanting to pursue costs of the litter then head to small claims . The state bodies won’t get involved as it’s a private matter.

Harness or Collar, what do you use for walks?
Dogsfevr replied to Animal House's topic in General Dog Discussion
Any tool will have the ability to cause damage when a dog hasn't been trained to walk properly . Most harnesses used are ill fitted & potential to cause back damage & front harnesses can alter a dogs gait . I only walk 1 dog on a harness & he's 11 yrs old ,prior to 10 always on his martingale ,slip lead or slip collar . I see so many dog with harnesses with roached backs & im not surprised with the way owners pull on them & the pressure placed on there spine.then you see those with harness that are pulling the elbows out on walks . If he walks fine on a flat collar i would stick to ,way more control . -
I would look at finding a good dog massage person ,bowen . Whilst the exercises will be helping the whole body takes a massive hit at times like this increasing muscle soreness. My Dachie due to another issue took 9 long months to walk fully again ,depression, soreness, fatigue on the other body parts increased a few weeks after & that was a crucial time in looking after all the muscles
-
I would also suggest if you truly want to be a dog park owner then go & spend time each week without dog & watch what is going on learn to read the other dogs .Make it your sole job to pay attention to what is going on & how the other dogs view it & when you should know its time to go ,time to step in & take control I like most don't go to parks
-
Sounds like the adult dog had enough of your pups behaviour and gave it a educated warning . More concerning though is you didn’t respect what went on and allowed your dog to go and invade this dogs space again . this has not thing to do with the breed

We suggest to anyone that wants to titre to still do the 15 month jab and titre after that ,

Has she had her hearing tested ,Deaf or poor hearing dogs can be chronic barkers and people assume there triggered by noise when there reacting to other senses and insecurities. I would be getting a Baer test done . As for debarking we have 2 that came to us debarked . it doesn’t work for every dog so finding a vet whose good at it a must . Some teach themselves to bark again . Our 2 can be heard but in very low tones ,given the choice they will bark all day & we live on a property . even if debarked it doesn’t solve the issue of what triggers the reaction from her but it will give you more sanity & lower your stress & fears as no matter what a serial barker is a nightmare for neighbours & its a nightmare for owners . I would even consider driving to another state if a vet there can do it better . As the council is already involved you have it easier in going down this path .

For most puppies there diner is there fuel ,How many times do you feed her & does she go over the top waiting for her food or waits calmy ?? I agree just place her outside & ignore or set a crate up where after meals is quiet time. Chances are this was funny to the household at first but she's getting bigger & the novelty is wearing off
-
I gather you have contacted the owners regarding this issue & what steps they wish to take ?? Sorry but if your a pet sitter then you need to step up & deal with potential issues better than asking on a forum especially if taking multi dogs from different families that have never meet & you expect to interact . I gather you have areas already set up for dogs in your care anyway especially for those that need a safe time out or don't get on so use plan . The other dog may have a UTI or be ill but these things people on a forum can't help you with as your business agreement is between you & The owners

I don’t treat . i researched the risk factor for heartworm and decided it was very small compared to the drug side effects but I’m in a lucky position ,different area and I would reassess the pros/ cons
