  1. I would suggest you speak to breeders of mini Smooths first .Find one that health tests and has good natures. Colour would then be the next factor and very few in the Smooths breed creams in fact I can’t ever recall seeing one but common in the Mini Longs
  2. In a breed I’m involved with breeders are very savvy to using DNA results as a tool but not as the end of the world scenario. the complete package needs to be considered . For example PRA is late onset meaning 10 plus years . Breeders will breed carriers to clear ,affected to clear providing the rest of the package ticks the boxes such as hips/elbows/nature . Going blind in old age can happen anyway ,crappy hips at a young age affects it for ever ,risks that need to be prioritised ,managed but still with the future in mind
  3. I would be going to the vet sooner than later or the very least phoning to express your concerns . Easy solution for the present minimise risk until you now what the future is
  4. Over exercising is just as bad as potentially overweight . First off the bag ratio is a guideline .The bag ratios are based on that being the soul diet anything added each day is part of the diet .The idea is to adapt to the body condition in front of you so it’s important to regularly feel your dog which you will be when brushing your pup weekly ,brush time is great for bonding,Training and ensuring you are feeling and touching your dog regularly to notice changes . That is a lot of weight for a Goldie of that age even if a chunky solid pup . it could be perfect for your boy it could be over weight . Generally good breeders discuss over exercising and 1.5 hrs is waaay to much for a 6 month old and nightly walks should be short . With my Setters at that age I only do 15 mins twice a day ,I don’t do 1.5 until Atleast 2 yrs and there fitness has been solely built up and finished growing . Joint health in puppies can decide so much in adult life . At this age leash walking is about training ,seeing the world ,learning self control and life skills . Mind games at home are a great training tool . If your breeder is local ask to pop around and see what they think providing they actually are dog savvy and didn’t just have a litter
  5. Sorry but vets have resources readily available, to them above and beyond what we do if breeders are expected to be at a certain level then the same applies to a vet If your not sure spend a few minutes to check or ask the experienced breeder at a consult about key features . We have had our own vets phone to query something ,nothing stopping new vets to do some hands on learning at shows, talking to breeders in there chosen field . Our puppy folders cover these key areas but when vets don’t respect this knowledge or listen to new owners then it’s the vets fault new or not .If they don’t now be humble and check We expect Doctors in the human field to be drug savvy and many have failed there luckily for people the pharmacist has picked up an issue ,vets are a pharmacist too so it does require a little more work . i totally get in multi cross breeds this is a much harder thing to work with but with breeds known for ivermectin issues then the first question asked should be have the parents been tested or the pup ,if owner unsure please check or we dont have a product suitable .
  6. The other issue is vets sell products that cause health issues ,potential death .Those things would be potentially recorded without a vet having the balls to accept the products they may sell is part of the issue . Most Vets don't have the ability to know what there talking about ,it takes a special vet to be open & honest & savvy & have true experience . Many clinics despite the very public issues surrounding certain flea/tick products haven't stopped selling it ,some vaccinate dogs with C7 in scenarios where its totally not required & without any thought of the lepto component & the affect to the dogs. Since vet clinics have know become chain stores all about the sales the only way this would work is providing vets are made very accountable for there decisions . Working in the animal industry i can only but cringe at what many vets say, suggest ,infact its down right scary. I belong on a breed group where a number of the dogs are dying younger than they should BUT simply put when you read what they feed, products they use & many other factors im not surprised . Sadly many owners its all about keeping there "furbaby" happy instead of keeping there wonderful dog in good health & a well adjusted animal . As a breeder its also no shock how many vet practices try to convince puppy buyers to feed, use products that are not suitable for the breed because they have no clue & almost bully puppy owners into there way or no way Many do not consider heartworm products with ivermectim sensitive breeds & crosses of those breeds . In my breed by nature it has a higher cholesterol so its important what meds are prescribed ,some meds side effects is increasing cholesterol levels ,diet is important as there at a higher risk of pancreatitis . Diabetes is becoming the norm in dogs aswell Our breed isn't the only breed known for higher cholesterol levels but surprisingly many vets don't know this when prescribing . Our dogs live to 14/16 years
  7. Problem is far too many vets misdiagnose so I wouldn’t be a fan and I myself had a dog badly misdiagnosed by a vet ,luckily I could read the x ray and question the vet another poor sucker wouldn’t have a dog listed for an issue By an idiot vet
  8. When it comes to hearts things can be tricky . We have had a 6 week pup vaccinated and all fine ,pup reached 8 weeks and things changed dramatically. It can and does happen and one vets grading can be different to another .One vets idea of a murmur is not the same as another ,Good vets can tell the difference within reason ,some pups sound like washing machines and a vet say murmur but it isn’t ,it’s not black/ white .Some pups get so overwhelmed at There first vet visit hearts can be tricker to hear ,there are factors that p,at a part You took the pup due to the ear but I gather the pup seemed active and happy when you picked it up not acting like a pup with a dodgy heart ?.You had no reason to think it’s heart was a problem No different than humans .
  9. A vac certificate does not prove your a legal owner at all and any vet handing out info based on that theory is going to get themselves in trouble . there are plenty of scenarios where someone has the vacc card of a dog but are not the legal owners nor privy to getting info from the vet .
  10. MY question would be why did the vet clear it for flying with an ear infection ? Im also surprised the vet has openly discussed this pup over the phone without consent from the breeder or proof you are actually the owner . The privacy law covers this area . Your best beat is to contact your state body on what is the process regarding purchasing a faulty product as dogs are considered a product/ goods . The breeder has actually offered a refund on return of the pup which is how it works when purchasing goods . Some will offer an exchange which is why it’s important to contact you state body on purchase issues and decide your best option ,that may be small claims which may mean you have to do it through the courts in your state you purchased the pup . Basically you need everything in writing not verbal . Go to those with correct knowledge on this area
  11. I see it different ways some owners are insanely boring, use the same uninspiring voice tone over and over again and have expectations the dog should meet but often don’t think it’s the humans that are just no value .. Some puppy classes are also very boring and don’t teach self control and enjoying your human so it really depends on the class you attend and what there focus is . I guess what you need to consider is will you always be sharing a home with another around or are your future plans different . Then base the house management on the future keeping in mind there is no guarantee they will always like each other
  12. Heartworn injection has been well known for issues for far too many years ,its unfortunate that people don't say to there vet no thanks i want to personally research a product before giving it to the dog just like a human would generally ask questions about any meds a doctor prescribes . We put in our puppy folders that we under no circumstances recommend it & if owners decide too its at there own risk .We actually don't heartworm ourselves as the risk of getting it in our area is so low compared to using any of the products We strongly suggest to our puppy buyers if they want to treat there dogs then they just give a good old fashioned heartworm tablet .Most just put a reminder in the phone or on the calendar so easy to remember . We also also wont vaccinate with C4 due to reactions & it was generally promoted that a dog didn't get its vacc & Heartworm on the same day . Mind you i wouldn't have vaccinated my dog when it was having allergy issues on the day & requiring medication
  13. The spot ons have been known to burn the skin . We are lucky and have no need to use those products but have seen dogs with skin reactions to frontline and advantage
  14. I taught mine to do both and decided which one was a better fit for the dog . Are you planning to trial .? If yes then I would go watch some trials
  15. Consider other factors ,flea/tick products with seizures .
  16. Tattooing was what breeders used to ID puppies before microchipping was the norm. to use a dog in a health testing scheme the dog needed to be identified like the GSD club. originally without ID you could take any dog to be tested but no proof that dog matched the ID. Now microchipping has that role so for hips,Elbows,DNA,eye, hearing testing the paperwork matches said dog Dobes,Rottis and GSD where the ones commonly tattooed. Generally it was part of there prefix and number so Bob11 etc .. Many tattooes where terrible to read and faded with age . We brought a dog from Germany and her ID back them was ear tattoo that was poor quality and when the hair grew in her ears impossible to see it
  17. What did the parents look like ? Is it pure no one can tell that ,does it look pure that could be questionable( and thats not due to the white flash) but this is a risk you take when you buy with no proof .
  18. Yes i have owned a dog that has done this due to muscle spasms & the severe pain associated with it . If you can source an amazing bowen massage person then worth getting the dog checked to see if anything is pinched .When my dog had his issues it was early morning .
  19. So true & we see it in our business ,a partner who is totally anti dog & begrudges the money required for hair cuts so its gets dran out longer between cuts . No dog should be brought into a home made to suck it up & maybe change someones mind if owning a dog is totally something they can't cope well after all why should the dog be the one to suffer . If a person is willing to be involved but just has never experienced dogs but is happy to give it a go then picking the right breed a must . Some breeds are like velcro always want to be with you & can drive some people bonkers ,others prefer that very independent space kind of dog . This also applies to parents who want a dog but have children terrified of them & believe by buying a dog they will just get over it & this often ends badly with dog no longer wanted ,forced to live out side . Mind you i would also be very careful with getting a sensitive breed if someone is very anti dog
  20. I would also be sure to look at Titer testing instead of vaccination in the future & be very mindful of any flea/tick meds being used
  21. Australians are selfish to dog ownership & shot themselves in the foot when it comes to places being dog friendly ,we run kennels & a grooming salon & we have clients who will walk there dogs over to our outdoor setting & in the past BBQ to allow there dogs to pee up it & then look at you like your a martian when you say please don't let your dog wee up our private belongings
  22. Where will the dog live inside or outside . All dogs shed except some breeds shed differently .Any of the low shedding breeds will require a trip to the groomers anywhere from 6/10 weeks & must be brushed regularly to remove the coat that sheds differently ,Prices for grooming can vary so please factor that into your breed choice.. As for your requirements most of that list comes down to what the owners will train & what type of life they will provide but even the best of dogs will have a digging moment it comes down to the degree it digs . Barking can be created often an issue with kids who run around screaming encouraging the dog to bark ,be over stimulated so it will require all family members to be committed to training, brushing, grooming & giving the dog a wonderful life outside of the bark yard ,
  23. Is this pup to be shown so a need for 2 ?? I have a dog who didn't drop his second till 6 months . As for the vet i dare say there like many numpty vets that grab down there & go heavy handed trying to find the other & results in the dog not playing the game . If this is an issue that means the dog isn't suitable for what ever reason then you need to address this with the breeder sooner than later & i certainly wouldn't get everyone to go hunting down there .
  24. We have boarded numerous Blue Staffies & all have skin issues . I would suggest its not a case of can you trust a blue staffy breeder but are you happy to take the risk of a skin issue dog that could potentially make the enjoyment your kids can get out of it not what you signed up for . All the Blue staffies we board have lovely natures they just have skin issues . My first question to them would be why they choice to bred Blues ,why she breeds Blue to Blue .Is there asking price way more than the correct colours . ,do they show or do any dog sports or do they just breed pups ??If they don't compete in any dog activity why did they decide to breed Staffies ,questions you ask As far as her spending lots of money to purchase a stud dog is irrelevant & if the breeder made a point of telling you that i see that as a "why". Breeding dogs is not about how much it cost to buy your stud dog or a bitch nor is that something you emphasis to a puppy buyer unless you charge more . Ask lots of questions & buy with your head (personally i would not buy a colour that is well known for bigger skin issues)
  25. The time to give a food is one of many factors because you need to eliminate other foods . Personally when ivory coat started changing there formulas and adding stuff to it I stopped using it . Itching isn’t due to teething . Most products that say lamb, fish or what ever else often contain chicken of some sort which makes it challenging for those owners with a legit chicken allergy dog and yes chicken is one of the bigger allergy food . But dog could be itchy for over reasons ,dirty coat ,are you brushing the dog etc etc
